This study was carried out to investigate the community structure and biomass of benthic marine algae at the intertidal and subtidal zones of Eocheongdo on the western coast of Korea seasonally from July 2008 to April 2009. Total 101 species including 12 of green algae, 23 of brown algae and 66 of red algae were collected and identified. Among these species, 19 species were found throughout the year. The dominant species which contributed significantly to the total biomass were Corallina pilulifera, Gelidium elegans, Sargassum thunbergii, Sargassum fusiforme, Saccharina japonica, Sargassum honeri and Sargassum filicinum. Annual seaweed biomass in dry weight was $237.5gm^{-2}$ and maximum biomass was recorded seasonally in winter ($272.1gm^{-2}$), while minimum was recorded in summer ($204.5gm^{-2}$). The number of species and biomass of the subtidal zone were greater than those of the intertidal zone. The number of species and biomass in Eocheongdo seem to be higher than those of other islands in the western coast of Korea, due to the environmental conditions characterized by the increased transparency, and the well established rocky shore.
Algal flora and community structure of benthic marine algae in the subtidal zone, Yeongil Bay area were studied. The number of algal species in the quadrats were identified totally 78: 2 Cyanophyta, 10 Chlorophyta, 19 Phaeophyta, and 47 Rhodophyta. The dominant species based on biomass were Sargassum hornerii, Undaria pinnatifida, and Sargassum thunbergii. Vertical distribution was clear by the representative algae such as, Undaria pinnatifida, Sargassum thunbergii, Sargassum horneri, Corallina spp. in the upper subtidal zone, Undaria pinnatifida, Sargassum horneri, Caulerpa okamurae in the middle zone, and Dictyopteris divaricata in the lower zone.

Morphological and molecular information of two marine algae collected from Korea is given. One belonging to a green alga, is characterized by small size up to 4 cm high, much branched thalli on all sides, slender and linear branchlets which is constricted near base, axes without prominent branch scars, chloroplasts with a prominent central pyrenoid. The other, as a brown alga, is distinct from other Korean species in having cylindrical elevated projections at all parts of thallus axis, leaves with slightly serrulate margin together with distinct midrib bearing spines and absence to rarely occurred vesicles. In phylogenetic tree based on rbcL sequences, these two species are nested in the same clade with Bryopsis triploramosa and Sargassum polyporum, respectively. In this study, these two species are newly recorded in the Korean marine algal flora based on the morphological and molecular data.

Marine algal flora and community structure were examined at four sites at Tongyeong, Korea, from February to December 2009. Eighty-two algal species were identified, including 10 green, 25 brown, and 47 red algae. During the study period, the number of species was highest at the Dukpo (61 species) site followed by the Gajodo (60 species), Yepo (58 species), and Chilchundo (53 species) sites. Seaweed biomass ranged from 578.11 to 678.26 g, with the maximum and minimum at Chilchundo and Yepo, respectively. Dominant species in term of biomass were Sargassum thunbergii at Yepo, Dukpo, and Gajodo and Gelidium amansii at Chilchundo. The vertical distribution from the high to low intertidal zone was Sargassum thunbergii and Chondria crassicaulis; Sargassum thunbergii and Ulva linza; Ulva pertusa, Sargassum fulvellum, and Gelidium amansii. Two groups clearly segregated in a cluster analysis, a Yepo/Dukpo group (group A) and a Gajodo/Chilchundo (B), indicating relatively strong differences in similarity. The seaweed community structure of group A was characterized by higher biomass and higher species richness of brown algae than were observed in group B. Additionally, the biomass ratio and the species richness of green algae was lower in group A. These differences in seaweed community structure may have been resulted from the effects of cold effluents.

Concerns about how ocean acidification will impact marine organisms have steadily increased in recent years, but there is a lack of knowledge on the responses of macroalgae. Here, we adopt an outdoor continuous-flowing mesocosm system designed for ocean acidification experiment that allows high CO2 conditions to vary with natural fluctuations in the environment. Following the establishment of the mesocosm, five species of macroalgae that are common along the coast of Korea (namely Ulva pertusa, Codium fragile, Sargassum thunbergii, S. horneri, and Prionitis cornea) were exposed to three different CO2 concentrations: ambient (×1) and elevated CO2 (2× and 4× ambient), over two-week period, and their ecophysiological traits were measured. Results indicated that both photosynthesis and growth exhibited species-specific responses to the different CO2 concentrations. Most notably, photosynthesis and growth increased in S. thunbergii when exposed to elevated CO2 conditions but decreased in P. cornea. The preference for different inorganic carbon species (CO2 and HCO3−), which were estimated by gross photosynthesis in the presence and absence of the external carbonic anhydrase (eCA) inhibitor acetazolamide, were also found to vary among species and CO2 treatments. Specifically, the two Sargassum species exhibited decreased eCA inhibition of photosynthesis with increased growth when exposed to high CO2 conditions. In contrast, growth of U. pertusa and C. fragile were not notably affected by increased CO2. Together, these results suggest that the five species of macroalgae may respond differently to changes in ocean acidity, with species-specific responses based on their differentiated photosynthetic acclimation. Understanding these physiological changes might allow us to better predict future changes in macroalgal communities in a more acidic ocean.

Sargassum filicinum Harvey, a brown alga (Phaeophyceae) native to Northeastern Asia, has been recently reported from the coast of Southern California (USA). Here we report the occurrence and range extension of this introduced species, as we found the alga at La Jolla and Rancho Packard in Todos Santos Bay, Baja California, Mexico. The first collections of S. filicinum correspond to several immature plants, found on September 8, 2005, drifting in the intertidal zone at La Jolla. Later on November 9, 2006, we found a well-established population in Rancho Packard in the middle intertidal zone to 2 m depth. Since S. filicinum is an annual monoecious species with air bladders, the risk there is a high risk of spreading rapidly along the Pacific, as in the case for S. muticum. The population in Rancho Packard extends 500 m along the coast, consisting mainly of young plants with an average length of 30 cm and a density of 5 thallus/m2. This is the first record of this invasive species for the Mexican Pacific coast, and it represents the southern limit along the Pacific coast of North America. This finding suggests that this invasive species has successfully colonized the Pacific coast of North America and its distributional range is still expanding.
Seven brown algal species (Ecklonia cava, Ishige okamurae, Sargassum fulvellum, Sargassum horneri, Sargassum coreanum, Sargassum thunbergii and Scytosiphon lomentaria) were hydrolyzed using five proteases (Protamex, Kojizyme, Neutrase, Flavourzyme and Alcalase) and screened for angiotensin 1-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory activities. Most algal species examined showed good ACE inhibitory activities after the enzymatic hydrolysis. However, E. cava was the most potent ACE inhibitor of the seven species. Flavourzyme digest of E. cava exhibited an $IC_{50}$ of around $0.3\;{\mu}g/mL$ for ACE; captopril has an $IC_{50}$ of $\~0.05\;{\mu}g/mL$. The Flavourzyme digest was separated to three fractions by an ultrafiltration membrane (5, 10, 30 kDa MWCO) system according to the molecular weights. The active components were mainly concentrated in >30 kD fraction which are composed of the highest protein content $(27\%)$ and phenolic content (261 mg/100 mL) compared to the other two smaller molecular weight fractions. Therefore, the active compounds appear to be relatively high molecular weight complex molecules associated with protein (glycoprotein) and polyphenols. Therefore, E. cave is a potential source of antihypertensive compound.
Marine algal flora and intertidal vegetation around Samchonpo power plant, south coast of Korea, were investigated at three sites, specially referred to the seasonal variation of the species from April to October, 1982. A total of 84 species were identified; 8 green, 19 brown and 57 red algae. Among three sampling sites investigated, 65 species were collected at the first site located in front of the power plant, 66 at the second site, Namildae beach, and 61 at the third, Sinsudo, respectively. The algal vegetation at the first site was dominated in cover by Sargassum thunbergii and Ulva pertusa in April, Corallina spp. Ulva pertusa in July, and Chondria crassicaulis and Ulva pertusa in October. At the second site, it was dominated in cover by Sargassum thunbergii, Gigartina tenella and Ulva pertusa in April, Sargassum thunbergii and Ulva pertusa in July, and Chondria crassicaulis and Ulva pertusa in October, whereas at the third site Sargassum thunbergii and Ulva pertusa in April, and Chondria crassicaulis in October, respectively. The biomass among three investigated sites showed 2,360 g-fresh wt/$m^2$ on an average; 283 g-dry wt/$m^2$ at the first, 277 g-dry wt/$m^2$ at the second, and 256 g-dry wt/$m^2$ at the third site, respectively.

Sargassum golden tides occurred in Shinan-gun and Jeju Island, Korea, between January and May 2015. In Shinangun, 5,180 tons of Sargassum were removed from 3,339 ha of coastline, while 20,000 tons were removed from Jeju Island. The huge floating masses of seaweed caused damage to fisheries in Shinan-gun including abalone sea cage, Pyropia and Saccharina farms off the southwest coast of Korea. Drifting Sargassum also washed ashore on Jeju Island. The species of Sargassum in these golden tides was identified as S. horneri (Turner) C. Agardh, based on morphology and molecular data, and it appears to have originated from the East China Sea. This is the first report on Sargassum golden tides causing damage to fisheries in Korea.
Characteristics of photosynthesis-light and photosynthesis-temperature relationships were seasonally compared among 4 species, two temperate Sargassurn (S. ringgoldianum and S. spathulophyllum) and two temperate kelp (Ecklonia cava and Eisenia bicyclis), growing in the same habitat in Oura Bay, Shimoda, central Japan. The photosynthesis-irradiance (P-I) curve of each species at the in situ temperature and the photosynthesis-temperature (P-T) curve at near saturation irradiance (400μmol·m^(-2)·s^(-1)) were determined by using differential gas-volumeters. Maximum photosynthetic rates (Prnax) for P-I curves of the two Sargassurn species were higher from summer to autumn than from winter to spring, while those of the two kelp species showed little difference among seasons. Net photosynthetic rates (Pn) at 100-400μmol·m^(-2)·s^(-1) of the Sargassurn species were higher than those of the kelp species in autumn, spring and summer, while in winter the rates were about the same between the Sargassurn and kelp species. Among seasons, the light saturation index (1k) values, dark respiration rates and light compensation points of Sargassurn species differed more than those of kelp species. Optimum temperature for P-T curves of Sargassurn species was 29℃ and that of kelp species was 27℃ in summer, while in winter the former was 27℃ and the latter was 25℃. Pn at 400 μmol·m^(-2)·s^(-1) at 10-33℃ of Sargassurn species were considerably higher than those of kelp species from spring to summer, while from autumn to winter the rates at 5-27℃ were about the same between the two. At supra-optimum temperatures, Pn of kelp species decreased more sharply than those of Sargassurn species in each season. These facts indicate that the two temperate Sargassurn species have a higher potential photosynthetic performance under warmer conditions than the two temperate kelp species even though they grow in the same habitat.
