In recent years, more than 5,000 tons of sargassum honeri have been infested in the southern coast and the coast of Jeju Island, causing serious damage to the farms and fisheries, and environmental problems. The alginate contained in the sargassum honeri is a natural polymeric substance mainly used for medicines and foods. However, since there is no way to utilize it in large quantities, a study was carried out to utilize bio polymer obtained from sargassum honeri in producing polymer mortar for repairing deteriorated infrastructures. From the tests of setting time, it was found that the L0BP12 mixture containing 12% of bio polymer increased the setting time by 20% as compared with the L12BP0 mixture using only synthetic polymer. From the tests of water absorbtion, the LOBP12 combination decreased by 0.36% compared to Plain-URHC using ultra rapid hardening cement. This indicated that the watertightness of the mortar was increased by the incorporation of the bio polymer. In the compressive and flexural strength tests, the strength decreased as the amount of bio polymer increased. The incorporation rate of the maximum bio polymer satisfying the KS F 4042 standard was determined to be 12%. In addition, the bond strength of the mortar produced with biopolymer was higher than that of Plain-URHC specimens, and it was confirmed that incorporation of bio polymer improves bond strength of mortar.
This study was carried out to investigate the community structure and biomass of benthic marine algae at the intertidal and subtidal zones of Eocheongdo on the western coast of Korea seasonally from July 2008 to April 2009. Total 101 species including 12 of green algae, 23 of brown algae and 66 of red algae were collected and identified. Among these species, 19 species were found throughout the year. The dominant species which contributed significantly to the total biomass were Corallina pilulifera, Gelidium elegans, Sargassum thunbergii, Sargassum fusiforme, Saccharina japonica, Sargassum honeri and Sargassum filicinum. Annual seaweed biomass in dry weight was $237.5gm^{-2}$ and maximum biomass was recorded seasonally in winter ($272.1gm^{-2}$), while minimum was recorded in summer ($204.5gm^{-2}$). The number of species and biomass of the subtidal zone were greater than those of the intertidal zone. The number of species and biomass in Eocheongdo seem to be higher than those of other islands in the western coast of Korea, due to the environmental conditions characterized by the increased transparency, and the well established rocky shore.
Seaweed Sargassum horneri extracts were obtained using supercritical carbon dioxide ($SC-CO_2$) and different solvents. $SC-CO_2$ was kept at a temperature of $45^{\circ}C$ and pressure of 250 bar. The flow rate of $CO_2$ (27 g/min) was constant during the entire 2-h extraction period, and ethanol was used as a cosolvent. Six different solvents [acetone, hexane, methanol, ethanol, acetone mix methanol (7:3), and hexane mix ethanol (9:1)] were used for extraction and agitated by magnetic stirring (250 rpm) in the dark at $25^{\circ}C$ for 20 h; the ratio of material to solvent was 1:10 (w/v). Antioxidant properties of S. horneri extracted using $SC-CO_2$ with ethanol and different solvents have shown good activity. The highest activity belongs to $SC-CO_2$ with ethanol extracted oil, showing DPPH, ABTS, total phenolic content, and total flavonoid levels of $68.38{\pm}1.21%$, $83.51{\pm}1.25%$, $0.64{\pm}0.02mg/g$, and $5.57{\pm}0.05mg/g$, respectively. The S. horneri extracts showed a significant correlation between the antioxidant activity and phenolic content. Based on these results, the $SC-CO_2$ extract (ethanol) of the seaweed extract from brown seaweed may be a valuable antioxidant source.

Oxidative stress causes tissue damage and facilitates the progression of metabolic diseases, including diabetes, cardiovascular heart diseases, and obesity. Lipid accumulation and obesity-related complications have been observed in the presence of extensive oxidative stress. As part of an ongoing study to develop therapeutic supplements, Sargassum sp. were tested for their ability to scavenge free radicals and intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), as well as to suppress lipid accumulation. Three species, S. hemiphyllum, S. thunbergii, and Sargassum horneri, were shown to scavenge free radicals in a di(phenyl)-(2,4,6-trinitrophenyl)iminoazanium (DPPH) assay. In addition, Sargassum sp. was shown to scavenge intracellular ROS and to decrease nitric oxide (NO) production in $H_2O_2$ and lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced in RAW264.7 mouse macrophages, respectively. Taken together, the results suggest that Sargassum sp. possess huge potential to relieve oxidative stress and related complications, as well as lipid-induced oxidation. They indicate that S. hemiphyllum, S. thunbergii, and S. horneri are potent functional supplements that can produce beneficial health effects through antioxidant and antiobesity activities, with S. hemiphyllum being the most potent among the Sargassum sp. tested. A potential mechanism for the effect of Sargassum sp. on the suppression of lipid accumulation in differentiating 3T3-L1 mouse preadipocytes through deactivation of the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor ${\gamma}$ (PPAR ${\gamma}$) is presented.

Seaweeds provide habitats in which marine animals can spawn and develop, and serve as a food supply for algaegrazing species such as sea urchins and abalone. Recently, seaweed species have disappeared from coastal ecosystems, leaving barren ground, defined as habitats that have lost their algae forests and where coralline algae containing calcium carbonate components have become encrusted on rocks. The biological causes of barren ground include grazing by herbivores and excessive seaweed harvest. The environmental harm caused by the spread of barren ground includes accelerated eutrophication following the reduction in seaweed, which plays an important role in oceanic purification. In the present study, we identified the relationships between various seaweed species and the occurrence of barren ground. Subtidal benthic macroalgal flora and community structure were observed seasonally on barren ground along vertical transects of rocky shores of Bihwa, Samchuck, and the east coast of Korea from February to November 2006. Fifty-eight seaweed species were identified, including 7 green, 15 brown, and 36 red algae species. There were between 6 and 28 species among seasons. Over the whole study period, average seaweed biomass (g wet wt $m^{-2}$) was 241.90 g, with a seasonal range of 25.26 to 760.34 g. Seaweed biomass declined with increasing seawater depth and ranged between 91.26 and 422.08 g. The vertical distribution of algae was characterized by Undaria pinnatifida and Sargassum honeri at 5 m, S. honeri and U. pinnatifida at 10 m, and U. pinnatifida and Agarum clathratum at 15 m depth. Seasonal patterns in community indices were not found. Community indices showed different patterns along vertical shoreline gradients; the dominance index increased but the richness, evenness, and diversity indices decreased with seawater depth. Sea urchin density was 8 to 24 individ. $m^{-2}$ in Bihwa. These urchin populations had significantly aggregated spatial patterns and recurrent destructive grazing appeared to be occurring.

Subtidal benthic macroalgal flora and community structure on barren grounds were examined seasonally along vertical shore gradients on the rocky shore of Hajung, Pohang, on the southeast coast of Korea, from February 2005 to November 2006. Twenty-six seaweed species were identified, including 5 green, 7 brown, and 14 red algae. The number of seaweed species ranged between 7 and 17 among seasons and between 13 and 20 species were found in vertical gradients along the shore. Over the study period, average seaweed biomass (g wet wt/$m^2$) was 299.88 g and it ranged seasonally from 120.99 to 620.00 g. Seaweed biomass declined with increasing seawater depth and ranged between 323.06 and 593.68 g. The dominant seaweed species, in terms of biomass, were Desmarestia ligulata and Sargassum honeri, which grew at depths between 5 and 10 m. The red alga Delisea pulchra was also abundant at a depth of 15 m. No seasonal patterns were found in community indices. Along vertical shore gradients, community indices showed different patterns; the dominance index increased and the richness, evenness, and diversity indices decreased with seawater depth.

In this study, we evaluated the durability of concrete produced with recycled polymer that could replace synthetic polymer, which is the main raw material of bridge deck concrete pavement. As a result of the slump and air content test, the requirements of the Korea Highway Corporation Standard were satisfied with all mixing conditions. The slump was lowered when incorporating the recycled bio-polymer, compared to other mix proportions concrete. In contrast, the compressive strength was increased by 6.3~24.4% when the recycled bio-polymer was mixed, compared to the concrete produced with synthetic polymer. It should be noted that the compressive strength was lowered when synthetic polymer was added to concrete mixture. Durability test results showed the best durability when incorporating synthetic polymer. The durability of concrete also increased as the amount of recycled bio-polymer increased, however, the impact was slightly smaller than that of synthetic polymer.
