  • This paper investigates the penetration of essential oil into radial and longitudinal directions of Castanea crenata. Present study was performed to know the essential oil penetration depth in radial and longitudinal direction of Castanea crenata. Essential oil penetration depth was found higher in longitudinal direction than in radial direction and it was about 53 times high at 15.0 second of penetration. In early wood, fiber conducted oil more than that of large vessel. In heartwood, fiber had played an important role for the conduction of oil. But in sapwood, small vessel conducted oil deeper than wood fiber, which was also significantly different from large. On the other hand, large vessel in heartwood had statistically lower penetration depth than that of fiber and small vessel. At the beginning of penetration the speed was high and gradually decreased in course of time.

  • The objective of this study was to date coffin woods of a grave of husband and wife, using the tree rings, which were excavated from Hoamdong, Chungju city in the central area of South Korea. The species of coffin woods was Japanese Red Pine (Pinus densiflora S. et Z.), one of the major conifers growing in Korea. The husband coffin was dated as A.D. 1628. Due to the absence of bark in the wife's coffin, the number of sapwood rings was estimated to obtain the cutting date. The cutting date of wife's one was estimated to be A.D. 1651${\pm}$10. The Jeogori Jacket for women, which was found in the husband coffin, indicates that the husband died earlier than the wife, as the tree-ring dates suggested.

  • An experiment was conducted to know ultra-pure distilled water penetration depth through large vessel, small vessel, latewood fiber and earlywood fiber in longitudinal direction of Castanea crenata. In heartwood, latewood fiber transported water more than large and small vessel. While in sapwood, small vessel conduction depth was found the highest. Penetration depth of water after 15.0 seconds, no significant difference was observed among earlywood fiber, latewood fiber and earlywood vessel. Whilst in heartwood, no statistical difference was observed among earlywood fiber, latewood fiber and earlywood vessel. At the beginning, the speed of water penetration was high and then gradually decreased.

  • In order to improve decaying properties of the plywood, the effectiveness of the Malenit treatment on the shear strength and decaying properties of the plywood has been investigated. The results are as follows. 1. No decrease of the shear strength of the plywood has shown despite of plywood treatment with Malenit right after plywood made or veneer treated with the same preservative prior to plywood manu. factured. 2. The effectiveness of Malenit treatment on decaying property of the plywood has shown much greater than that of the untreated plywood and red pine sapwood. 3. Weight decreases of the test specimens due to the infection of the different fungi have seen in different ways. If fungi infected weight decreases of the specimens are different in it's degree due to the fungi.

  • Surface mold fungi growing on CCA-treated wood could be inhibited effectively by the incorporation of moldicide into treating solution. In this study, moldicides compatible with the CCA solutions from various commercial moldicides were screened, and then their optimum concentrations for controlling surface mold on CCA-treated radiata pine sapwood were examined through both the laboratory and the field trials. Among nine commercial moldicdes tested, two substituted isothiazolinones, moldicide A containing 2-n-octyl-4-isothiazoline-3-one and moldicide B containing 5-chloro-2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one and 2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one, were chemically compatible with CCA solution. The optimum concentration to be incorporated into 2% CCA treating solution was determined to be 0.001% for moldicide A and 0.003% for moldicide B.

  • Severe bark decay disease was observed on oak logs at a shiitake cultivation farm in Geochang-gun, Gyeongnam province. The symptoms observed were fruiting bodies that had developed on the top and side surface of oak logs. As a result, the bark came off easily exposing the sapwood. Slime mold specimens collected from oak logs showed developing fruiting bodies comprising of stalks, hypothallus, capillitium, and columella, and the causal agent of bark decay disease was identified as Stemonitis splendens on the basis of morphological characteristics. To our knowledge, this is the first report of Stemonitis splendens causing bark decay of oak logs used for shiitake mushroom cultivation in Korea.

  • The study has been carried to evaluate the wood color, a typical element of visual and decorative effect, for seven major domestic softwoods using L*a*b* and chrominance ($\Delta$E*ab). The result showed that the values of whiteness, redness, and yellowness were positive at both sapwood and heartwood and there were no wood having a small chrominance difference ranged 0~0.5. There was also no wood having a chrominance difference ranging 0.5~3.0. Ginkgo biloba, Pinus koraiensis, and Larix kaempferi wood showed a little different chrominance, Taxus cuspidata, Pinus densiflora for. erecta, and Pinus densiflora wood substantial different chrominance, Juniperus chinensis wood largest different chrominance. It is concluded that the study results could be utilized as a data base in areas of wood craft and furniture and could open a way to substitute foreign imported woods.

  • An experiment was conducted to know the safranine impregnation distance from surface to inward using 6 different hardwood species. During impregnation, 3 parameters were applied-vacuum, pressure and soaking time. Only vacuum treatment did not increase the permeability of wood. Vacuum followed by pressure increased the penetration depth of safranine in radial, tangential and longitudinal direction. Longitudinal penetration was found easy to impregnate. Comparing with radial and tangential direction, radial penetration was found easy. There was a striking difference among sapwood and heartwood permeability. Safranine input depth was found highest in diffused porous wood rather than in ring porous wood. At increased vacuum and pressure, safranine penetration was found easy.

  • An experiment was conducted to observe the safranine flow depth in longitudinal direction of Populus tomentiglandulosa. Longitudinal flow of safranine was considered from bottom to top end of the tree. Vessel and wood fiber were considered for the measurement of safranine flow depth. It was found that sapwood conducted safranine 12.25% higher in longitudinal direction compared with heartwood. Vessel was found the main avenue for safranine flow. Vessel conducted safranine 41.94% higher than that of wood fiber. Safranine penetrated through vessel and fiber forming a curved meniscus.

  • In this report, we describe the anatomical features of Gmelina arborea Roxb. belong to the genera of Verbenaceae native to Bangladesh and safranine penetration depth in radial and longitudinal directions. The wood of this species was characterized mostly by distinct growth ring boundaries, diffuse-porous, simple perforations, alternate non-vestured intervessel pits, and relatively short vessel elements and medium fibers. Thin to thick walled septate fibers with simple to minutely bordered pits are confined to the radial walls. Tyloses are common. They are paratracheal axial parenchyma vascicnetric and confluent. Rays not higher than 1milimeter are found, and larger rays commonly 4 to 5 seriate are dominantly present, as are multi seriate rays composed of a procumbent ray with 1 row of square or upright cells. Acicular crystals are present in ray cells. Another experiment was taken under consideration to observe the liquid penetration depth in longitudinal and radial directions using safranine. It was found that safranine penetrated easily in longitudinal direction and sapwood was more permeable than heartwood.
