  • This study was performed on preliminary structural design of a small scale WIG craft which has been developed as a next generation high speed maritime transportation system in Korea. A composite structure design using the foam-sandwich for main wing and tail fins and the honeycomb sandwich and skin-stringer-ring frame for fuselage was applied for weight reduction as well as structural stability. A commercial FEM code, NASTRAN for was utilized to confirm the structural safety for the reiterate design modifications to meet design requirements including the target weight. Each main wing was jointed with the fuselage by eight high strength insert bolts for easy assembling and disassembling as well as for assuring the required 20 years service life. For control surface structural design, the channel type spar, the foam sandwich skin and the lug joint were adopted.

  • Sandwich structures of$ Nd_2Fe_{14}B/Fe/Nd_2Fe_{14}B $magnetic films have been grown by a KrF excimer laser (λ=248 nm) ablation technique. Magnetic properties were characterized by varying the thickness of hard ($Nd_2Fe_{14}B$) and soft (Fe) magnetic films and the volume fraction as well. In the (x)nm[NdFeB]/(y)nm[Fe]/(x)nm[NdFeB]/(100) Si structure the thickness (x) was varied from 3.6 to 54 nm, and (y) from 15 to 112 nm. At (y) = 15~20 nm where the volume fraction of Fe corresponded to 61~75%, the sandwich structure exhibited an enhanced Mr/Ms and iHc as well from the result of the exchange coupling between the magnetic layers. Experimentally calculated exchange constant$ (A_s) of A_s = 2.5{\times}10^{-10} J/m$ was estimated using the intrinsic coercivity (iHc) of 1.2 kOe at 5 K for the sandwich magnetic trilayers.

  • Composite sandwich structures are widely employed in various applications, due to their high specific stiffness and specific bending strength compared to solid panels. Lately, for that reason, the advanced composite sandwich structures are employed in satellite structures: materials should be as light as possible with the highest attainable performance. This study is majorly focused on inserts employed to the composite sandwich satellite structures. A new hybrid insert design was developed in precedent study to reduce the mass of the sandwich structure since the mass of the satellite structure is related to high launching cost [1]. In this study, the thermal characteristics and behavior of the precedently developed hybrid insert with carbon composite reinforcing web and the conventional partial insert were numerically investigated.

  • Quasi-static three-point bending tests on sandwich beams with expanded metal sheets as core were conducted. Relationships between the force and displacement at the mid-span of the sandwich beams were obtained from the experiments. Numerical simulations were carried out using ABAQUS/EXPLCIT and the results were thoroughly compared with the experimental results. A parametric analysis was performed using a Box-Behnken design (BBD) for the design of experiments (DOE) techniques and a finite element modeling. Then, the influence of the core layers number, size of the cell and, thickness of the substrates was investigated. The results showed that the increase in the size of the expanded metal cell in a reasonable range was required to improve the performance of the structure under bending collapse. It was found that core layers number and size of the cell was key factors governing the quasi-static response of the sandwich beams with lattice cores.

  • In this paper sandwich structures like beams and plates are optimised by using parametric study. The structures are composed of fibre reinforced composites for facial material and resin concrete and PVC foam for core materials. The stacking sequences and thickness of the composites are controlled as major parameters to find out the optimal condition for machine tool components. For the plate structure for machine tool bed composites-skined sandwich structure which has several ribs are proposed to enhance both directional bending stiffnesses at the same time. From the results optimal configuration and materials for high precesion machine tools are proposed.

  • A structure's vibration characteristic is determined by modal property of the system. Through proper vibration analysis or experiments, the structure can be modified to reduce of vibration and noise. This paper is concerned with the natural frequency and modal loss factor of sandwich plates with viscoelastic core. The effects of shear and normal strain in the viscoelastic layer are investigated on modal properties, natural frequency and modal loss factor, by changing geometry parameter and viscoelastic material property of sandwich plates. The errors of modal parameters resulting from neglecting the extension or compression in the core material for simply supported(S-S-S-S) case are compared with those for clamped(C-C-C-C) boundary condition. Finite difference method(FDM) is utilized as numerical analysis technique of square sandwich plates for fixed boundary conditions. In order to reduce computation time and increase accuracy, improved finite difference expression with fourth order truncation error was used.

  • The numerical thermal frequency responses of the skew sandwich shell panels structure are investigated via a higher-order polynomial shear deformation theory including the thickness stretching effect. A customized MATLAB code is developed using the current mathematical model for the computational purpose. The finite element solution accuracy and consistency have been checked via solving different kinds of numerical benchmark examples taken from the literature. After confirming the standardization of the model, it is further extended to show the effect of different important geometrical parameters such as span-to-thickness ratios, aspect ratios, curvature ratios, core-to-face thickness ratios, skew angles, and support conditions on the frequencies of the sandwich composite flat/curved panel structure under elevated temperature environment.

  • This note presents the main results of an experimental investigation into the mechanical behaviour of a composite sandwich conceived as a lightweight material for naval engineering applications. The sandwich structure is formed by a three-dimensional glass fibre/polymer matrix fabric with transverse piles interconnecting the skins; the core is filled with a polymer matrix/glass microspheres syntactic foam; additional Glass Fibre Reinforced Plastics extra-skins are laminated on the external facings of the filled fabric. The main features of the experimental tests on syntactic foam, skins and sandwich panels are presented and discussed, with focus on both in-plane and out-of-plane responses. This work is part of a broader research investigation aimed at a complete characterisation, both experimental and numerical, of the complex mechanical behaviour of this composite sandwich.

  • The sound insulation capacity of honeycomb sandwich plates which have relatively higher strength ratios to weight is poorer than those of uniform and another sandwich plates. Therefore, improvement of the sound insulation capacity of the honeycomb sandwich plate which has a meritof lightness is required to use it in automobile and rapid rail road industries. In this study, to improving the sound insulation capacity of the honeycomb sandwich plate, the sound transmission loss of the structure is experimentally investigated by adding a viscoelastic damping layer, The effective add position and thickness of the layer were investigated from the viewpoints of both sound transmission loss and improved sound transmission loss over the frequency range from 800Hz to 10kHz.

  • Sandwich sheet with inner structure is expected to find many applications because of high stiffness to mass ratio. However, low resistance to the compressive pressure in the thickness direction is a dominating factor in the formability of sandwich sheet. In this study, sandwich sheet with pyramid type core is considered. For the compressive characteristics in the thickness direction, experiments and finite element simulations are carried out. In the experiment, deformation behavior is observed and discussed as the compression proceeds. It is shown that a corresponding finite element simulation can give a reasonable agreement with experiment in terms of maximum pressure. However, simulation shows some discrepancy from the experiment in terms of compressive pressure-displacement characteristics. The reasons for this discrepancy are studied in the geometrical imperfectness of sandwich sheet. It is also observed that most of deformation is dominated by buckling mode of pyramid legs.
