  • Since conical sandwich shells are important structures in the modern industries, in this paper, for the first time, vibration behavior of the truncated conical sandwich shells which include temperature dependent porous FG face sheets and temperature dependent homogeneous core in various thermal conditions are investigated. A high order theory of sandwich shells which modified by considering the flexibility of the core and nonlinear von Karman strains are utilized. Power law rule which modified by considering the two types of porosity volume fractions are applied to model the functionally graded materials. By utilizing the Hamilton's energy principle, and considering the in-plane and thermal stresses in the face-sheets and the core, the governing equations are obtained. A Galerkin procedure is used to solve the equations in a simply supported boundary condition. Uniform, linear and nonlinear temperature distributions are used to model the effect of the temperature changing in the sandwich shell. To verify the results of this study, they are compared with FEM results obtained by Abaqus software and for special cases with the results in literatures. Eigen frequencies variations are surveyed versus the temperature changing, geometrical effects, porosity, and some others in the numerical examples.

  • The main objective of this research work is to present analytical solutions for the thermoelastic bending analysis of sandwich plates made of functionally graded materials with an arbitrary gradient. The governing equations of equilibrium are solved for a functionally graded sandwich plates under the effect of thermal loads. The transverse shear and normal strain and stress effects on thermoelastic bending of such sandwich plates are considered. Field equations for functionally graded sandwich plates whose deformations are governed by either the shear deformation theories or the classical theory are derived. Displacement functions that identically satisfy boundary conditions are used to reduce the governing equations to a set of coupled ordinary differential equations with variable coefficients. The results of the shear deformation theories are compared together. Numerical results for deflections and stresses of functionally graded metal-ceramic plates are investigated.

  • The aim of this study is to investigate the impact behavior and impact-induced damage of sandwich composites made of E-glass/epoxy face sheets and PVC foam. The studies were carried out on square flat and curved sandwich panels with two different radius of curvatures. Impact tests were performed under impact energies of 10 J, 25 J and 80 J using an instrumented drop-weight machine. Contact force and displacement versus time and contact force- displacement graphs of sandwich panels were presented to determine the panel response. Through these graphs, the energy absorbing capacity of the sandwich panels was determined. The impact responses and failure modes of flat and curved sandwich panels were compared and the effect of curvature on sandwich composite panel was demonstrated. Testing has shown that the maximum contact force decrease while displacement increases with increasing of panel curvature and curved panels exhibits mixed failure mode, with cylindrical and cone cracking.

  • A New hyperbolic shear deformation theory is developed for the bending analysis of softcore and hardcore functionally graded sandwich beams. This theory satisfies the equilibrium conditions at the top and bottom faces of the sandwich beam and does not require the shear correction factor. The governing equations are derived from the principle of virtual work. Sandwich beams have functionally graded skins and two types of homogenous core (softcore and hardcore). The material properties of functionally graded skins are graded through the thickness according to the power-law distribution. The Navier solution is used to obtain the closed form solutions for simply supported FGM sandwich beams. The accuracy and effectiveness of proposed theory are verified by comparison with previous research. A detailed numerical study is carried out to examine the influence of the deflections, stresses, and sandwich beam type on the bending responses of functionally graded sandwich beams.

  • In this study, the effect of polyurethane foam filler, in addition to surface layer thickness and core material thickness, on vibration characteristics of sandwich structures was investigated. The manufacturing process was carried out according to the Taguchi method. The natural frequencies and damping ratios of the produced samples were determined experimentally for fixed-free boundary conditions. In addition, solid models were developed for test samples and their finite element analyses were performed with $ANSYS^{(R)}$ to obtain their natural frequencies and mode shapes. An acceptably good agreement was found with the comparison of experimental results with the numerically obtained ones. The most effective parameters on the vibration characteristics of the sandwich structure were determined by the Taguchi method.

  • Sandwich structures of$ Nd_2Fe_{14}B/Fe/Nd_2Fe_{14}B $magnetic films have been grown by a KrF excimer laser (λ=248 nm) ablation technique. Magnetic properties were characterized by varying the thickness of hard ($Nd_2Fe_{14}B$) and soft (Fe) magnetic films and the volume fraction as well. In the (x)nm[NdFeB]/(y)nm[Fe]/(x)nm[NdFeB]/(100) Si structure the thickness (x) was varied from 3.6 to 54 nm, and (y) from 15 to 112 nm. At (y) = 15~20 nm where the volume fraction of Fe corresponded to 61~75%, the sandwich structure exhibited an enhanced Mr/Ms and iHc as well from the result of the exchange coupling between the magnetic layers. Experimentally calculated exchange constant$ (A_s) of A_s = 2.5{\times}10^{-10} J/m$ was estimated using the intrinsic coercivity (iHc) of 1.2 kOe at 5 K for the sandwich magnetic trilayers.

  • Efficient finite element method has been introduced for metallic sandwich plates subject to 3-point bending. A full model 3-point bending FE-analysis shows that plastic behavior of inner structures appears only at the load point. So, Unit structures of sandwich plates are defined to numerically calculate the bending stiffness with recurrent boundary condition of pure bending. And then equivalent models with same bending stiffness and strength of full models are designed analytically. It is demonstrated that results of both models are almost same and FE analysis method with equivalent models can reduce analysis time effectively.

  • In machine tool design, fast traversing cannot be achieved without reducing mass of the moving part. Honeycomb sandwich panel is extremely lightweight, and relatively rigid at the same time. We can reduce much weight when we selectively utilize honeycomb sandwich panels as stiffeners on machine tool structures. Feasibility of reducing weight is studied using a beam structure with both ends fixed.

  • This paper presents the effect of diaphragm spacing ratio(depth to span) on behavior and capacity of composite steel-concrete structures of sandwich system. Numerical analysis has been performed variety diaphragm ratio, behavior and load condition. As a results of this study, in case of shear behavior and concentrated load, the capacity of structure such as yielding and ultimate load improve according to diaphragm ratio because of concrete confining effect by steel plate and stress redistribution by diaphragm. But in case of bending behavior or uniform load, it proved that diaphragm ratio don't influence on behavior and capacity of composite structures of sandwich system.

  • The absorption and the interference shielding of the electromagnetic wave problem have been a very important issue for commercial and military purposes. This study dealt with the simulation reflection loss for electromagnetic absorbing sandwich type structures in X-band(8.2Ghz~12.4GHz). Glass/epoxy composites containing conductive carbon blacks were used for the face sheets and styrofoams were used for the core. Their permittivities in X-band were measured using the transmission line technique. Simulation results of 3-1ayered sandwich type structures showed the reflection loss using the theory about transmission and reflection in a multi-layered medium.
