Hydraulic dredgers(Hopper dredger) are the most important piece of equipment in the entire harbor engineering field, and most suitable for the removal of sand and weakly consloidated sediment such as silt. In maintenance dredging, specially confined harbor or congested passage area, Hopper dredger is user most popularly because less obstruction and danger to navigation than other mostly stationary dredgers. Investigation of the physical behave of dredged material disposal in coastal water from the Hopper dredger includes estimations of pattern as well as thickness of material on the bottom. Calculation based on vertical settling and horizontal advection of single particles ignore the effects of bulk properties of the disposed marterial, vertical and horizontal diffusion. and material dilution due to the entrainment of ambient water during descent. This paper focuses on the analysis of dredging and dumping characteristics and the spatial and temporal changes in the dumping fields for the water column and bottom at a hypothetically confined coastal water. This model accounts the behavior of material after release from the hopper dredger. It is shown that the model describes the qualitative feature of prototype dumping process and its response.
The spudcan requires the suitable design considering the soil, platform, and environmental conditions. Its shape needs to be designed to secure sufficient reaction of soil so that it can prevent overturning accidents. Its shape also has to minimize the installation and extraction time. Even in the same soil condition, the reaction of soil may be different depending on the shape of spud can, mainly the slope of top and bottom plates. Therefore, in this study, the relation between the slope of plates and the reaction of soil with and without water jetting is analyzed to better understand their interactions and correlations. For the investigation, a wind turbine installation jack-up rig (WTIJ) is selected as the target platform and the Gulf of Mexico is considered as the target site. A multi layered (sand overlying two clays) soil profile is applied as the assumed soil condition and the soil-structure interaction (SSI) analysis is performed by using ANSYS to analyze the effect of the slope change of the bottom plate and water jetting on the reaction of soil. This kind of investigation and simulation is needed to develop optimal and smart spudcan with water-jetting control in the future.
Based on 53 quantitative samples collected in April (23 stations) and August (30 stations) of 1993, the species composition, distribution and abundance of macrobenthic invertebrates and bottom characteristics in Chonsu Bay were conducted. Bottom sediments consisted of mud at the close to the dyke, sandymud in the central bay, and coarse sand in the mouth of the bay. A total of 273 species (177 species in April and 200 species in August) were identified. Mean density per sampling station was 480 ind./m$^2$ in April and 1126 ind./m$^2$ in August, respectively. Number of species and densities decreased in the northern part of the bay. The macrobenthos showed a temporal difference in species composition, range of distribution, and community delimitation caused by larval settling. Although during the settling period in summer, large numbers of juveniles added in most of regions, unrelated to environmental conditions, but, successful recruitment may has been a rare event locally Theora fragilis (bivalve), Lumbrineris longifolia(polychaete), Neptys oligobranchia (polychaete) were numerically dominant, but their densities varied seasonally. Community structures of macrobenthos in Chonsu Bay were affected by several bottom environmental conditions, related to tidal current speed, regionally.
order to investigate physical characteristics and element concentrations of sediments, coastal bottom sediments were collected at 20 stations in the vicinity of Youngkwang Nuclear Power Plant. After air drying of samples in the laboratory. article size distribution was examined by Master sizer (X-350F), radio-activity by HPGe ${\gamma}$-spectrphotometer, and element concentrations by ICP-AES and AAS. According to particle size analysis , sediments are mainly composed of silt fraction weith 23% of sand, 65% of silt and 12% of clay on average. Most sediments are derived from muddy environment that silt dominates with the characteristics of 5.3${\varsigma}$ mean particle size, poorly sorted, very fine skewed and lepto-kurtic. Only two sediments are well sorted with sandy silt owing to wind, winnowing action, tide and current andits complex reactions. Element concentrations in the coastal bottom sediments are relatively high at finer sediment and show significant relationship with grain size. Index of geoaccumulation by heavy metals at every sampling station is classified as practically unpolluted. The radioactivities of the sediments were measured for 15 isotope elements, and 2 elements of K-40 and Cs-137 were detected in most sediments. The K-40 is the natural nuclide and the artificial nuclide of Cs-137 was thought to be derived from the fallout of past nuclear weapon test. The results of correlation coefficient between grain size and radioactivity shows that the activity of Cs-137 significantly increases in finer grain.
Recently it was known that the problems of nearshore processes and damage of berth and counter facilities frequently had appeared at the small fishery port, such as Daebang near Samcheonpo city, Korea. Here we try to analyze the impact of the rearrangement of counter facilities and berth layout adopted for tranquility of its inner harbor. Because this harbor is being connected to Daebang channel, the rearrangement of the structures might affect to the current speed and direction and wave height, so do to the sea bottom undulation. Therefore, we made model test for the several layouts of the berth and breakwater in this area. Numerical model result shows that the bottom was eroded by 1m by tidal currents and the speed of flow did not shrink, even after the construction work was completed. The direction of the sand movement was downdrift. Although the model study gave reasonable description of beach processes and approach channel sedimentation mechanism, it is necessary to compare with the field history, including the records of waves, tides and bottom materials, etc. for better prediction.
Two new harpacticoid species of family Thalestridae are described on the basis of the specimens collected from the shallow sublittoral sand bottom or seagrasses of rocky shore in South Korea. Dactylopusia pauciarticulata n. sp. is discernible from its 19 congeners by the 6-articulated antennule. Paradactylopodia koreana n. sp. most resembles P. striata Kunz, 1973 of its seven congeners, but obviously distinguished from it by the shape of male leg 2 endopod.

Bottom sediments, in various types of sediment transport models, have been usually assumed to be horizontally and/or vertically homogeneous. The assumption may be appropriate in well-sorted sedimentary environments including sand beaches and high turbid regions of fine grained cohesive sediments. (omitted)
Two marine gastrotrich species are reported from sublittoral sand bottom of Korea: Diplodasys ankeli Wilke, 1954 and D. meloriae Todaro, Balsamo and Tongiorgi, 1992. Both species are redescribed in detail, with the discussion on the intraspecific variability between Korean specimens and the original description or among Korean specimens. The genus Diplodasys is newly recorded from Korea as well as the Northwest Pacific.

Turbidity meter calibrations were conducted using bottom sediment and suspended material collected with a vertical array of sediment traps at the coastal water off Gaduk Island. Compared to the bottom sediment comprising sand fraction of approximately 6%, trapped suspended material was composed entirely of silt and clay fractions and showed a tendency to get finer as elevation from the sea-bed increases. Slope parameter of linear regression due to bottom sediment was of minimum value and values of those due to suspended material increased gradually as the height of sediment trap increases (i.e., sediment size decreases). This result shows that turbidity meter calibration using bottom sediment can cause an overestimation error in the calculation of suspended sediment concentration and that the error can reach up to 25% in case of this study. Therefore, it is suggested that the use of a corrected calibration curve based on grain size distribution of suspended material instead of bottom sediment may reduce the measurement error of suspended sediment concentration.

The vertical load imposed on the bucket foundation is transferred from the soil inside the bucket to the bottom of the foundation, and also to the outer surface of the skirt. For the design of a bucket foundation installed in sand, the vertical load transfer characteristics have to be clearly identified. However, the response of bucket foundations in sand subjected to a vertical load has not been investigated. In this study, we performed two-dimensional axisymmetric finite element analyses and investigated the vertical load transfer mechanism of bucket foundation installed in sand. The end bearing capacity of bucket foundation is shown to be larger than that of the shallow foundation, whereas the frictional resistance is smaller than that for a pile. The end bearing capacity of the bucket foundation is larger than the shallow foundation because the shear stress acting on the skirt pushes down and enlarges the failure surface. The skin friction is smaller than the pile because the settlement induces horizontal movement of the soil below the tip of the foundation and reduces the normal stress acting at the bottom part of the skirt. The calculated bearing capacity of the bucket foundation is larger than the sum of end bearing capacity of shallow foundation and skin friction of pile. This is because the increment of the end bearing capacity is larger than the reduction in the skin friction.
