Permeable Reactive Barriers (PRBs) using zero valent iron (ZVI, $Fe^0$) is a promising technology for in-situ remediation of trichloroethylene (TCE) forming dense non aqueous phase liquid (DNAPL). The objective of this study is to develop an enhanced treatment method of trichloroethylene-contaminated groundwater using ZVI packed bed with direct current (D.C.). A column experiment was performed to investigate degradation efficiency of TCE that was performed in three different combination of control (only sand), ZVI column (ZVI:sand, packing ratio 1:2(v/v)) and bipolar column (ZVI:sand=1:2(v/v) with electric current) in the test columns. As the results of this study, the degradation efficiency of TCE was improved with simultaneous application of both bipolar column compared to that used ZVI column. Because ZVI particles are isolated and individual particles act like small electrodes. In this experiment, it was indicated a basic material for application of bipolar packed bed as electro-PRBs that was effective degradation of TCE.

Tamarix chinenis blooms twice a you and its flowers, branches and leaves make the adjustment of tree shape. Propagation methods and growth characteristics of T. chinensis were studied in order to ascertain its potential use as one of vegetation resources for coast forestation and landscaping. The study results indicated that 1 or 2 you old hard wood cuttings showed higher rooting ratio than greenwood or semi hard wood cuttings. One to one mixture between vermiculite and pearlite appeared to be the best for bed soil, and sea sand and silt(loess) mixture was the next. Sea sand and granitic soil followed after. In terms of seasonal differences, spring cuttings showed the best rooting ratio, root number, and root length. Fall cuttings followed after spring cutting, and summer cuttings showed worst results regarding rooting ratio, root number, and root length. The best rooting promotion effects of growth regulators were observed with sea sand bed soils. There was no significant difference among growth regulators in terms of rooting and shoot growth. Low concentration below 100 ppm of growth regulators was enough for rooting promotion effect. In general, the number and mean length of roots and shoots were showed the excellent records in the sites with high rooting ratio. The study result strongly showed that T. chinensis can be considered as a suitable tree for coast forestation and landscaping because of its easy cutting propagation and rapid growth on saline lands.

In the reactor following the American standard test method (ASTM) D5757-95 and lab-scale fluidized bed combustor, the attrition characteristics of sand and ash of Korean anthracite were investigated. The attrition characteristics, such as particle size distribution of fly ash, attrition rate, and attrition ratio etc, were studied with variation of gas velocities. The particle attrition of ash was more active than sand which was generally used as a fluidized material and also the attrition index of ash taken by ASTM D5757-95 was 5 times higher than that of sand. The formation of fine particles continuously occurred due to particle attrition with increasing gas velocities. The following equation has been suggested for attrition rate of ash. $$\frac{dW}{dt}=-3.18{\times}10^{-7}(U-U_{mf})W$$.

The purpose of this study was to develop prediction models for plant species abundance by stream restoration. Generally the stream plant is affected by stream gemophology. So in this study, the relationship between the vegetation abundance and stream gemophology was developed by multiple regression analysis. The stream characteristics utilized in this study were longitudinal slope, transectional slope, micro-landforms through the longitudinal direction, riparian width and geometric mean diameter and biggest diameter of bed material, and cumulated coarse and fine sand weight portion. The Pyungchang River with mountainous watershed and the Kyungan stream and the Bokha stream in the agricultural region were selected and vegetation species abundance and stream characteristics were documented from the site at 2~3km intervals from the upper stream to the lower. The Models for predicting the vegetation abundance were developed by multiple regression analysis using SPSS statistics package. The linear relationship between the dependant(species abundance) and independant(stream characteristics) variables was tested by a graphical method. Longitudinal and transectional slope had a nonlinear relationship with species abundance. In the next step, the independance between the independant variables was tested and the correlation between independant and dependant variables was tested by the Pearson bivariate correlation test. The selected independant variables were transectional slope, riparian width, and cumulated fine sand weight portion. From the multiple regression analysis, the $R^2$for the Pyungchang river, Kyungan stream, Bokga stream were 0.651, 0.512 and 0.240 respectively. The natural stream configuration in the Pyungchang river had the best result and the lower $R^2$for Kyunan and Bokha stream were due to human impact which disturbed the natural ecosystem. The lowest $R^2$for the Bokha stream was due to the shifting sandy bed. If the stream bed is fugitive, the prediction model may not be valid. Using the multiple regression models, the vegetation abundance could be predicted with stream characteristics such as, transection slope, riaparian width, cumulated fine sand weigth portion, after stream restoration.
Flooding hazard caused by natural and artificial environmental changes is closely associated with change in river bed configuration. This study is aimed at explaining a river-bed change related to soil erosion in the Keum river basin using GIS and RS. The USLE was used to compute soil erosion rate on the basis of GIS. River-bed profiles stretching from Kongju to Ippo were measured to construct a 3D-geomorphological map. The river-bed change was also detected by remote sensing images using Landsat TM during the period of 1982 to 2000 for the Keum river. The result shows that USLE indicates a mean soil erosion rate of $1.8\;kg/m^2/year$, and a net increase of a river-bed change at a rate of $+5\;cm/m^2$/year in the Kangkyeong area. The change in river-bed is interpreted to have been caused by soil erosion in the downstream of the Keum river basin. In addition river-bed change mainly occurred on the downstream of the confluence where tributaries and the main channel meet. Other possible river-bed change is caused by a removal of fluvial sand aggregates, which might have resulted in a net decrease of exposed area of sediment distribution between 1991 and 1995, while a construction of underwater structures, including a bridge, a reclamation of sand bars for rice fields and dikes, resulted in an increase of the exposed area of river-bed due to sediment accumulation.
With a belief of high water quality production and less chemical usage, membrane technology including Microfiltration (MF), Ultrafiltration (UF), and Nanofiltration(NF) is being employed more and more in drinking water treatment process. However, due to higher energy consumption of UF and NF, MF is normally used for drinking water treatment especially in a plant of large scale. In this investigation, performance ofsand filtration and membrane filtration was compared regarding removal of various water quality parameters, such as TOC, DOC, KMnO4 consumption, THMFP, and HAAFP. Two lines of pilot plant have been operated, one of which line is a traditional advanced water treatment process which includes sedimentation, sand filtration, ozonation, and activated carbon, and the other line is an alternative treatment process which includes sedimentation with inclined plate, MF membrane, ozonation, and activated carbon. For the first about 4months of period, MF filtration showed similar or little bit higher performance than sand filtration. However, after about 4month later, sand filtration showed much higher performance in removing all parameters monitored in the investigation. It was found that sand filtration is a better option than MF filtration as far as microbial community is fully activated in sand filter bed.
The purpose of the study is to investigate the possibility of cutting of Eucommia ulmoides $O_{LIV}.$ (Eucomiaceae) by using various soils in Korea. Four different kinds of soil, such as sand, red cray, red cray plus sand and Masa soil, were used in the investigation. It was found that total length, number and rate of rooting were most prominent in the cutting cultivated in Masa soil.
The river-bed variation and the sediment transport in an alluvial stream are very complicated physical phenomena, especially in a stream where the dam construction prevents the supply of earth and sand from upper tributaries Therefore, the mathematical modeling is needed to establish. The purpose of this study is to apply river-bed variation to the Han River downstream by the conception of gradually varied unsteady flow instead of that of steady flow in order to decrease errors. For the variation and forecast of river-bed, the numerical analysis has been made in this study by way of discharge variation and river-bed variation. In conclusion, the numerical analysis shows that river-bed variation, sediment transport , and their forecast have similarity to natural phenomena and that river-bed variation is greatly affected in sediment transport by discharge variation and retention time(duration). Therefore, the errors of numerical analysis can be reduced by the application of flood data instead of continuous discharge data.
Manning's roughness factor to flow in sand-bed channels may be divided into the grain roughness factor nd the form roughness factor. The grain roughness factor may be dedermined by using Keulegan's formula. By using available experimental data, it was found there is a unique relationship between the form roughness and the hydraulic radius to sediment particle size ratio for a given value of the Froude number. The form roughness and the bed form may be determined by using this unique relationship. The technique for engineering applications of the results appears to be quite simple.
In order to investigate the response in fauna and biological communities of terrestrial insects to the vegetation encroachment on the sandbar, species composition, species diversity, functional species traits and community structure of land-dwelling insects sampled by a pit-fall trap were compared at the bare and vegetated sandbar of a typical sand-bed stream, the Naeseong Stream, Korea. Species diversity of the insects was increased but their density was decreased as the riparian vegetation encroached at the sandbar. In particular, indicator species of bare sandbar such as Cicindela laetescripta and Dianemobius csikii, were found at the bar sandbar. The insect communities were clearly classified at the bare and vegetated sandbar according to coverages of riparian plants. The food web of the bare sandbar was composed of detritus - detritivore and scavenger - predator consisted mainly of Coleoptera. On the other hand, the food web of the vegetated sandbar was composed of plants - sucking and chewing herbivore - parasitoid and predator. These results showed that biodiversity of terrestrial insects was increased, food web was changed from grazing to detritus food chain, and insect fauna specific bare sandbar disappeared as the riparian vegetation invaded on the sandbar of a sand-bed stream.
