  • Although a centrifuge model test is performed with scaled models, it has a lot of advantages compared with usual scale model tests, for the reproduction of stress levels equal to a full scale test is possible. At the beginning of the Daewoo Institute of Construction Technology, a servo-motor-driven single axis actuator was introduced and has been in use with a geo-centrifuge. However, for variety of experiments and construction stage simulation, various apparatuses have been developed, such as a vacuum generator, a lateral actuator for tidal power simulation, a gravel hopper and a sand drainer for filled-up ground, and a water level controller. The apparatuses have been manufactured with enough strength and durability to be operated under specific g levels. This paper presents the properties of the apparatuses and the results of the tests performed with those.

  • It is very important to study on the structural behaviors of structurally damaged tunnel linings. A series of centrifuge model tests were performed in order to investigate different behaviors of tunnel linings. A 1/100-scaled aluminum horseshoe tunnel linings with a radius 5 cm, height 8 cm were buried in a depth with dry Joomunjin standard sand, the relative density of which was 86%. Such sectional forces as bending moments and thrusts along the tunnel circumference were measured by twelve strain gages. Earth pressures in soil mass and on the outside of lining model were estimated by pressure transducers, ground surface settlements at a center and edges by using LVDTs.

  • This paper intends to investigate such effects through experiments. The contents of the investigation are effects of position of repeated loading and unloading, passing frequency. For the purpose of the investigation an experimental load-deflection system is developed and the system is possible to measure deflection of the wall and earth pressure due to different size of strip loading and cyclic loading. The findings from the experiments are as follows: 1. As repeated loading approaches to the wall, the measured horizontal residual earth pressure agrees well with Rowe's empirical formula, while as the loading is far from the wall the earth pressure consists with Boussinesq's and Spangler's formulas. Also it is found that below 0.6m depth from ground surface the effects of repeated loading can be nearly neglected. 2. From comparison analyses of earth pressure theories and experimental results, a reagression equation is suggested herein, and earth pressure at any depth and maximum earth pressure due to cyclic loading can be estimated from the equation.

  • The method to prepare the large cemented sand specimen for calibration chamber test by air-pluviation is investigated in this study. The uniformity of cemented specimen is evaluated by performing the CPTs, DMTs, and bender element tests in the calibration chamber. The sand particles, pre-wetted with 0.5% water content, are mixed with gypsum to provide the homogeneous coating of gypsum particles on the grain surface. It was shown that the pre-wetting of particle surface is effective to minimize the potential for segregation between sands and gypsum during air-pluviation. It was observed that the extreme void ratios ($e_{max}\;and\;e_{mix}$) of the mixture of pre-wetted sand and gypsum powder increase at lower gypsum content while those of the mixture of dry sand and gypsum decrease with increasing gypsum content. It was also shown from the test results that large cemented specimens reconstituted in calibration chamber by rainer system are quite uniform in vertical and horizontal directions.
