  • When users use medical volume rendering applications, selecting specific region of volume data and observing the region by magnification is a common process. As the wood-grain artifact is arise from the magnified image, the jittered sampling technique has been used to remove the problem. However, the jittered sampling leads to some noise along the volume edge. In this research, we reveal the reason of the noise, and present a solution. To remove the wood-grain artifact without the noise, we propose the empty space jittering and the sampling alignment method. Using these methods, we can produce high quality volume rendering images without noticeable time consuming.

  • Purpose : Recently, many quality issues are aroused in military forces, such as failures in K-series weapons, combat uniforms' defects and 40mm ammunition explosion accident. To address these problems, Defense Agency for Technology and Quality(DTaQ) introduced new systems such as Manufacturing Readiness Assessment(MRA), Test Report Information System(TRIS) and so on. However, these activities require the human and time resources which cannot be increased in short period. In this paper, we suggest more practical and efficient product examination method. Methods : The most popular and widely used government's quality assurance technique is a sampling method to examine the product. In this research, we first reviewed the DTaQ's quality assurance regulation, then identified several possible problems and finally suggested more efficient and effective sampling plans. Results : We have suggested new sampling framework and evaluated its performance on two military supplies by comparing with other sampling method, and observed that the number of tested samples can be substantially reduced. Therefore, required quality assurance time can be saved. Conclusion : In this paper, we first reviewed the product examination frameworks of DTaQ, PPQMS and DCMA. Then we identified several possible problems which can cause the loss of objectivity and time. To handle these problems, we suggested the new product examination framework and tested the framework to verify the performance.

  • The fast and accurate spectrum sensing over an ultra-wide bandwidth is a big challenge for the radio environment cognition. Considering sparse signal feature, two novel compressed sensing schemes are proposed, which can reduce compressed sampling rate in contrast to the traditional scheme. One algorithm is dynamically adjusting compression ratio based on modulation recognition and identification of symbol rate, which can reduce compression ratio. Furthermore, without priori information of the modulation and symbol rate, another improved algorithm is proposed with the application potential in practice, which does not need to reconstruct the signals. The improved algorithm is divided into two stages, which are the approaching stage and the monitoring stage. The overall sampling rate can be dramatically reduced without the performance deterioration of the spectrum detection compared to the conventional static compressed sampling rate algorithm. Numerous results show that the proposed compressed sensing technique can reduce sampling rate by 35%, with an acceptable detection probability over 0.9.

  • We have employed two methods to remove slime at the end of the sampler in clay layers. The first method is a sampling process that harnesses low pressure to clean up the ground around the sampler tip. The second method, in consideration of a disturbed layer, involves a technique of inserting the sampler 50 cm deep into the ground before cleaning up the verge of the sampler by using high pressure. Physical and mechanical properties of these two methods have been compared and analyzed to investigate how different sampling methods affect degree of disturbance. The first method shows little disturbance since the unconfined compression test results in quite greater E$\_$50//q$\_$u/ in the first method than in the second method. On the other hand, the consolidation test results in a slightly greater compression index in the second method than in the first method, when their indexes are compared in the same depth. This suggests that the second method demonstrates less disturbance than the first method does. It is assumed that the second method may reduce disturbance slightly, However, we suspect that choosing any of the two methods would not obtain a considerable difference in sampling.

  • The validation technique is classified with two methods whether to demand of additional experimental points. The method which requires additional experimental points such as RSME is actually impossible in engineering field. Therefore, the method which only use experimented points such as the cross validation technique is only available. But the cross validation not only requires considerable computational costs for generating metamodel each iterations, but also cannot measure quantitatively the fidelity of metamodel. In this research we propose a new validation technique for representative metamodels using an variance of metamodel and confidence interval information. The proposed validation technique computes confidence intervals using a variance information from the metamodel. This technique will have influence on choosing the accurate metamodel, constructing ensemble of each metamodels and advancing effectively sequential sampling technique.

  • The objective of this research was to evaluate an sampling effect of fish species and individual number on sampling techniques of electrofishing and conventional capture methods of cast net and kick net in 38 stream sites sampled during June - September, 2005. For the study, sampling gears were categorized as three types of electrofishing method (EM), conventional sampling technique (CM), and the combined technique (CT) of the electrofishing and the conventional method to compare statistical differences. Major differences of species composition between the CM and EM method were found in some benthic species of Misgurnus mizolepis and Iksookimia koreensis along with lithophilic species of Pungtungia herzi. These species were predominated in the EM rather than the CM, indicating that conventional sampling can underestimate the abundance of benthic or lithophilic species. In contrast ,individual number of typical water column species such as Zacco platypus and Zacco temmincki were more sampled by the CM, so that these fish populations were community overestimated. Also, t-tests on the types of sampling gear from various watersheds of Chogang Stream, Yugu Stream, Daejeon Stream, and Gap Stream showed that total individual numbers and species number in each stream were significantly (t values = 2.806-6.896, p values<0.05, n = 5-14) greater in the CT than the CM. Similar statistical significance (p<1.001, n = (10-24) on sampling seasons were observed during the monsoon and postmonsoon. These results indicate that if the electrofishing is not added to the conventional gears, the abundance of fish population and community can be underestimated and some benthic or lithophilic species may be excluded from the analysis, resulting in overall errors including sampling, fish fauna, and final judgement of community abundance. Overall our results strongly suggest that new application of electrofishing method along with the conventional sampling gears reduce sampling bias on underestimation of the real fish populations and communities.

  • This paper represent the variable structure adaptive mode control technique which is new approach to implement the robust control of industrial robot manipulator with external disturbances and parameter uncertainties. Sliding mode control is a well-known technique for robust control of uncertain nonlinear systems. The robustness of sliding model controllers can be shown in contiuous time, but digital implementation may not preserve robustness properties because the sampling process limits the existence of a true sliding mode. the sampling process often forces the trajectory to oscillate in the neighborhood of the sliding surface. Adaptive control technique is particularly well-suited to robot manipulators where dynamic model is highly complex and may contain unknown parameters. Adaptive control algorithm is designed by using the principle of the model reference adaptive control method based upon the hyperstability theory. The proposed control scheme has a simple sturcture is computationally fast and does not require knowledge of the complex dynamic model or the parameter values of the manipulator or the payload. Simulation results show that the proposed method not only improves the performance of the system but also reduces the chattering problem of sliding mode control, Consequently, it is expected that the new adaptive sliding mode control algorithm will be suited for various practical applications of industrial robot control system.

  • This study suggests a practical but rational approach for the development of reliability-based LRFD criteria for transmission towers under wind and ice loadings in Korea. Based on available statistical data on wind speed and icing on transmission lines in Korea, the design wind and ice loads are obtained by Monte Carlo Simulations. In the study, the AFOSM reliability method and an Importance Sampling Technique are used for the element and system reliability evaluation of actual transmission towers. Based on the selected target reliabilities, a set of load and resistance factors for the LRFD criteria are calibrated using the AFOSM and the code optimization technique.

  • HRV(Heart rate variability) analysis parameter is widely used as an index to evaluate the autonomic nervous system and cardiac function. For reliable HRV analysis, we need to acquire the accurate ECG signals. Most of commercially available portable ECG devices have low sampling rate because of low power consumption and small size issues, which make it difficult to measure RR-interval accurately. This study is to improve the accuracy of RR-interval by developing R-wave interpolation technique, based on the morphological characteristics of the QRS complex. When the developed method was applied to ECG obtained at 200 Hz and the results were compared with 1000 Hz reference device, the error range decreased by 1.33 times in sitting and by 2.38 times in cycling exercise. Therefore, the proposed interpolation technique is thought to be useful to improve the accuracy of R-R interval in the portable ECG device with low sampling rate.

  • Flow through a scaled horizontal axis marine current turbine was numerically simulated after validation and the turbine design was optimized. The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code Ansys-CFX 16.1 for numerical modeling, an in-house blade element momentum (BEM) code for analytical modeling and an in-house surrogate-based optimization (SBO) code were used to find an optimal turbine design. The blade-pitch angle (${\theta}$) and the number of rotor blades (NR) were taken as design variables. A single objective optimization approach was utilized in the present work. The defined objective function was the turbine's power coefficient ($C_P$). A $3{\times}3$ full-factorial sampling technique was used to define the sample space. This sampling technique gave different turbine designs, which were further evaluated for the objective function by solving the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations (RANS). Finally, the SBO technique with search algorithm produced an optimal design. It is found that the optimal design has improved the objective function by 26.5%. This article presents the solution approach, analysis of the turbine flow field and the predictability of various surrogate based techniques.
