  • Ventilation rates can be measured directly by a tracer decay method, although little is known of the effects of different sampling intervals on decay rte calculations. This study determined variations in decay rates calculated by three techniques using residential ozone decay data. The calculation techniques were a regression technique, decay techniques using half-life and average-life, and finite difference techniques using two different time intervals. Variation associated with regression technique calculations for residential ozone decay rates based on data from both sample intervals were within 10% (2.81$\pm$1.88 hr-1). However, both half-life and finite difference technique calculations using a shorter-time interval were significantly different from those obtained with the regression technique(p<0.05). Therefore, the use of short sampling intervals in tracer decay may cause significant error in decay rate calculations.

  • Research on underwater sensor networks is increasing due to such reasons as marine resource management, maritime disaster prediction and military protection. Many underwater sensor networks performs wireless communication using an acoustic sound wave band signal having a relatively low frequency. So the digital part of their modem can take charge of carrier band signal processing. To enable this, the sampling rate of the baseband band signal should be increased to a sampling rate at which carrier band signal processing is possible. In this paper, we designed a sampling rate increasing circuit based on a CIC interpolator for underwater sensor nodes. The CIC interpolator has a simple circuit structure. However, since the CIC interpolator has a large attenuation of the pass band and a wide transition band, an inverse sinc LPF is added to compensate for frequency response of the CIC interpolator. The proposed interpolator was verified in time domain and frequency domain using ModelSim and Matlab.

  • This paper focuses on systematic design about the membership ranges of the main design factors such as control error, control error rate, and sampling time for the fuzzy logic control of the variable speed drive refrigeration cycle. The upper and the lowest limit of the membership ranges are set up from the data of static characteristics obtained by experiments. Three kinds of membership ranges on the control error and the control error rate are tested by experiments. Especially, an effect of sampling time on control performance is also investigated in the same way. Experimental data showed the control error rate and the sampling time strongly effected on the control performance of the refrigeration cycle with a variable speed drive.

  • This paper proposes, based on a bandpass sampling theory, a novel method to find valid sampling frequency range and minimum sampling rate with low computational complexity for downconversion of N bandpass radio frequency(RF) signals, under application of all possible signal placements(full permutations) in a IF stage. Additionally, we have developed a complexity-reducing method to obtaine the opttimal and minimal sampling rate for supporting the user-wanted guard-band or spacing between adjacent downconverted signal spectrums. Moreover, we have verified through comparisons with other methods that the proposed methods have more advantageous properties.

  • Objectives: This study was conducted to evaluate the use of polyurethane foam disk passive air samplers (PUF PAS) for better measurement of atmospheric polychlorinared dibenzo-p-dioxins/furans (PCDD/Fs) concentrations compared to PUF PAS combined with high volume air samplers (HVS). Methods: Air samples were collected by a low volume air sampler (LVS) and PUF PAS. A total of two pairs were continuously collected for six months, but the PUF was replaced every two months. Results: A good correlation was shown ($R^2=0.8595$, p<0.0001) between atmospheric PCDD/Fs concentration measured by the LVS and PUF PAS. The average air sampling rate ($1.5m^3/day-sampler$) of all PCDD/Fs congeners showed a middle of the means which were measured using a HVS by other researchers in different cities. In addition, the air sampling rates of the LVS for each congener made less difference than did those of the HVS. Conclusion: It was found that measurements using the LVS were less influenced by atmospheric peak PCDD/Fs concentrations. However, trace POPs such as PCDD/Fs may involve relatively large analytical errors in measurement, and as a result the air sampling rate of the respective PCDD/Fs isomer is also likely to involve errors. The method of using a regression straight line between the concentrations obtained from the LVS and those from the PUF PAS was judged higher than the method using the air sampling rate, since the former compensated for the experimental errors in the process of evaluation of atmospheric PCDD/F concentrations using the PUF PAS.

  • In this paper we compare the performance of 4 different algorithms for converting the sampling frequency of an audio from 44.1KHz to 48KHz. The algorithms considered here include the basic polyphase method. sine function based method. multi-stage method. and B-spline based method. For a fair comparison, the sampling rate converters using the 4 algorithms are redesigned under a high fidelity condition. Then, their H/W complexities are compared in terms of the computational complexity and the memory size. As a result, it is shown that the basic polyphase method and sine function based method outperform the other two in terms of the computational complexity, while the B-spline based method requires less memory than the others.

  • Many Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) methods have been proposed for structural damage diagnosis and prognosis. However, SHM for pinched hysteretic structures can be problematic due to the high level of nonlinearity. The model-free hysteresis loop analysis (HLA) has displayed notable robustness and accuracy in identifying damage for full-scaled and scaled test buildings. In this paper, the performance of HLA is compared with seven other SHM methods in identifying lateral elastic stiffness for a six-story numerical building with highly nonlinear pinching behavior. Two successive earthquakes are employed to compare the accuracy and consistency of methods within and between events. Robustness is assessed across sampling rates 50-1000 Hz in noise-free condition and then assessed with 10% root mean square (RMS) noise added to responses at 250 Hz sampling rate. Results confirm HLA is the most robust method to sampling rate and noise. HLA preserves high accuracy even when the sampling rate drops to 50 Hz, where the performance of other methods deteriorates considerably. In noisy conditions, the maximum absolute estimation error is less than 4% for HLA. The overall results show HLA has high robustness and accuracy for an extremely nonlinear, but realistic case compared to a range of leading and recent model-based and model-free methods.

  • The Army's rocket missile is a one-shot weapon system, which is produced and used for only one mission, and requires high reliability. While reliability analysis with failure data can result in underestimation of the life distribution, reliability analysis with all the non-failure data can result in overestimation of the life distribution. Under or overestimation of the life distribution can lead to cost increase by early disposal or complete observation of all rocket missiles. In order to overcome this problem, the Army suggests the guideline of the number of samples from non-failure data for reliability analysis with failure data. However, the currently used sampling method can generate errors for predicting the failure rate. To solve this problem, this study proposes a new sampling procedure for predicting a future failure rate using non-failure data. The comparison test between the currently used sampling method and the proposed sampling method is conducted and the result shows that the proposed sampling method can predict the future failure rate more accurately.
