Fish field survey, especially fish distribution and their ecological characteristics, was performed in the downstream region of Gyeongan stream during the period of before (June) and after (October) the summer monsoon in 2010. Depending on the characteristics of each site, fyke net or casting net was used for fish sampling. Feeding classification was determined by the analysis of stomach contents. Total number of family and species sampled were 5 and 17, respectively. The dominant family was Cyprinidae (12 species), and relative abundance (RA) of the most dominant species, Lepomis macrochirus and Zacco platypus, was 38% and 24%, respectively. Exotic species and Korean endemic species observed were 3 (423 individuals, RA 44%) and 4 (98 individuals, RA 10%), respectively. Tolerance guild analysis as characteristics of ecological indicators revealed an undoubtedly high percentage (97%), compared to others as reflected by the identification of just one sensitive species. Analysis of trophic guilds showed that L. macrochirus dominated among insectivores (44% RA). The food of L. macrochirus composed of, aquatic insects, benthic invertebrates, zooplankton, Chironomidae, and waterweed. Thus, we determined that L. macrochirus could be classified as insectivores (partially carnivores) in this study. Conversely, Z. platypus consumed Cladocera exclusively, greater than 90% of their feed. We presume that stable isotope analysis would identify the exact position of these species in the food web.
In this study, we collected the tap water that treated from water plant in Seoul, Incheon, Taejon, Kwangju, Taeku and Pusan and supplied each house. The sampling period was June and September, 1997. The concentration of THMs formed by chlorination in drinking water was determined with the purge and trap method with GC/MSD recommended by the us EPA 542.2 method. Chloroform is the most of THMs (47.43%~93.11%) and the content order is bromodichloromethane > chlorodibromomethane > bromoform. In Incheon, Taejon, Kwangju, Taeku and Pusan, the content of bromodichloromethane, chlorodibromomethane and bromoform was higher than Seoul. But, in June and September, the concentration of THMs in six cities is not over Korea Drinking Water Regulation $100{\mu}g/L$. The calculated human exposure for each substances were chloroform $6.14{\times}10^{-4}mg/kg/day$, bromodichloromethane $1.01{\times}10^{-4}mg/kg/day$, chlorodibromomethane $0.29{\times}10^{-4}mg/kg/day$, bromoform $0.01{\times}10^{-4}mg/kg/day$ and THMs $7.98{\times}10^{-4}mg/kg/day$.

This study was carried out to evaluate the relationships between stand attributes and litterfall amounts in a 28-year old Quercus acutissima stand. Eighteen sampling plots of $20m{\times}20m$ were chosen and litterfall was collected from May 2005 to December 2006. There was no correlation between stand attributes(tree density, mean diameter at breast height, mean height, basal area) and litterfall amounts except for flower and miscellaneous litter for the study period. There were no significant relationships between leaf litter and basal area(r=0.02, 0.05; P=0.93, 0.83) and between leaf litter and tree density(r=-0.10, 0.05; P=0.85, 0.69). Also, leaf litter was affected neither by mean diameter at breast height(r=-0.08, 0.30; P=0.73, 0.22) nor by mean height(r=-0.24, 0.09; P=0.34, 0.70). Other litter amounts such as bark, branch, and acorn showed no relationships with the stand attributes (P>0.05). The lack of significant relationships between litterfall amounts and stand attributes could be due to the closed canopy with a complete crown cover in this mature oak stand.
A statistical approach is used to investigate the relative economic advantages of pressurized water reactor (PWR) and pressurized heavy water reactor (PHWR-CANDU) nuclear power plants for hypothetical 900Mwe systems with the throwaway fuel cycle to be built in the Republic of Korea. Power cost is decomposed into the cost components related to the plant capital, operation and maintenance, working capital requirements and fuel cycle operation. The calculation of construction cost is performed with the modified version of computer code ORCOST, and the modified POWERCO-50 is used to evaluate the cost components. Most of economic parameters are treated as statistical variables, each being given with a certain range. Through a random sampling procedures. the probability histograms on unit plant construction costs and power generating costs are obtained. The power cost probability histograms of the PWR and the PHWR plants overlap considerably, and the power costs of two systems appear to be almost same with the PHWR power cost being 0.4mil1/kwh lower compared with 39.4 mills/kwh for the PWR plant (July 1986 US-dollars). When a construction period of PHWR plant is longer by one year than that of PWR plant, there is no difference in the unit power cost of two plants. This comparison leads to no definite conclusion on the cost advantage of the PWR plant versus the PHWR plant. We conclude that the selection issue of nuclear power plants in Korea still remains an open question and that future effort to solve this question should be made toward economic quantification of those factors such as technology transfer and localization.

In 2006, pinewood nematode, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, was isolated from about 50 years old trees of Pinus densiflora and P. koraiensis showing leaf-wilt and -drying symptoms in Gwangju, Gyeonggi-do and Chuncheon, Gangwon-do. Isolation of pinewood nematodes from sapwood of infected pine trees showed no difference in population density between tree species and among the sampling heights on the main stem. Migration of pinewood nematodes in the host tree were investigated by inoculation of red pine (P. densiflora, 3 years old) seedlings with B. xylophilus. The nematodes seemed to move in red pine seedlings prior to multiplication and it might have taken about 20 days to start multiplication and expression of symptoms including wilt and dieback. In initial time after inoculation, nematodes started migration through the cortical resin canal from inoculated site and further showed upward and downward movements. More nematodes were observed in cortical resin canal during early period of inoculation and later in resin canal of xylem and tracheid also while, the pith still remained free from nematode. The density of B. xylophilus was higher in seedlings of low-vigor with poor root growth than in seedlings of normal root growth. Seedlings showing high density of B. xylophilus exhibited stem discoloration and secondary infection by fungus at the inoculation site.
This study was undertaken to investigate the origin of suspended matter to induce turbidity water in Gachang dam in view of environmental geology. During the period from May to August 2004, field works and sampling were carried out three times at the dam and along its streams, and chemical and mineralogical analyses such as ICP, IC, particle size analyzer, XRD and SEM were made on water, soil and suspended matter in water. Electrical conductivity (EC), turbidity, the contents of cation and anion increase from upstream toward the dam mostly due to the geological factors such as weathring of the rocks causing the increase of the total ion content. Vermiculite, illite, kaolinite, quartz, feldspar and iron hydroxide are commonly found in suspended matters in water and soils. Finer particles (d10) in soil increase slightly toward downstream and the vermiculite content is highest in the dam water. Since geological differences are not significant, mineralogy are similar in suspended matters and soils. Clay mineral compositions present in suspended matters were alsmost the same as those in soils, indicating the origin of soils by weathering of host rocks and being transported to the dam by stream water.
Objectives : To assess the prevalence of knee osteoarthritis through proper diagnosis in a rural community and to elucidate the relevant factors of this health problem in order to develop educational methods for the prevention of female knee osteoarthritis as well to provide basic data for prospective research. Methods : Over a period of three months starting from August, 2000, 432 women over the age of 40 and living in a rural area were selected by a multistage cluster sampling method in order to investigate the prevalence of knee osteoarthritis and the related factors. The study utilized interviews and radiological examination. The criteria of knee osteoarthritis used was the American College of Rheumatology classification criteria for osteoarthritis of the knee(1995). Results : The adjusted prevalence of knee osteoarthritis among the subjects was 55.0%, and multiple logistic regression analysis showed that the odds ratio(OR) of knee osteoarthritis among subjects 50-59 years of age and subjects older than 60 years of age as compared to subjects 40-49 years of age were 2.43(95% CI: 1.30-4.70) and 4.40(95% CI: 2.47-7.83), respectively. The OR of knee osteoarthritis among factory workers or farmers as compared to others was 1.79(95% CI: 1.03-3.12). The OR of knee osteoarthritis among subjects who had a family history and subjects who had knee injury or surgical history against those subjects had neither were 2.56(95% CI: 1.42-4.03) and 4.70(95% CI:1.45-15.19), respectively. The OR of knee osteoarthritis among smokers against non smokers was 0.47(95% CI: 0.22-0.97). Conclusions : Related factors of knee osteoarthritis included age, occupation, family history, smoking, knee injury and history of surgery In order to prevent knee osteoarthritis in high risked rural woman, education concerning self-care methods and safety guideline must be provided at the work place by the public and private health sectors. Additionally, these women should be continually encouraged to exercise, including jogging and swimming regularly.

To investigate the aquatic environmental factors and processes controlling primary production in the Seomjin River estuary, chlorophyll a, nutrients, pH, SS, DO, temperature, salinity and primary productivity were measured in February, April, August and October, 2001. Primary productivity values ranged between 50.7 and 14,120.3 mg C $m^{-3} day^{-1}$ during the sampling period. In contrast to other estuaries, light condition did not seem to be the important limiting factor far primary production due to high water-column transparency during most of the time. The autumn bloom occurred in regions where salinity values ranged between 10 and 20 psu. This phenomenon appeared to develop every year and deserves further investigation. The behavior of nutrients, which is one of the major factors controlling the primary productivity, appeared to be governed by salinity regimes. The main source of nitrogenous nutrients seemed to be the freshwater runoff from the Seomjin River. However, that of phosphorus seemed to be from the industrial wastewater in Gwangyang area. The primary pro-duction of phytoplankton in the study area varied with space and time, showing a close correlation with water column transparency, and exhibited higher values compared to those of adjacent coastal regions in Gwangyang Bay.
Phytoplankton community is one of the important factors for the management of aquatic environment due to generation of varying toxins by harmful algal species. This study was performed to examine the phytoplankton community structure (PCS) in the midstream of Geum River (GR) from January 2014 to December 2015. The water sampling was performed in five stations on 2014, and three stations on 2015. Subsequently, the morphological identification was performed by microscopic observation in laboratory condition. As results, total 265 species were identified and it was comprised of 40.8% of Bacillariophyceae, 9.1% of Cyanophyceae, 44.5% of Chlorophyceae, and the others (4.9%). During the investigation period, total average standing crop of phytoplankton was $12,948cells\;mL^{-1}$, and it was comprised of $7,702cells\;mL^{-1}$ of Bacillariophyceae, $2,821cells\;mL^{-1}$ of Cyanophyceae, $2,121cells\;mL^{-1}$ of Chlorophyceae, and $305cells\;mL^{-1}$ of others. To verify which tributaries of upstream area influence on PCS of midstream of GR, the phytoplankton standing crops of two stations including Mihocheon (MH) and Gapcheon (GC) were examined on 2014, and compared to result of on 2015. The results were shown that the MH station had more similar phytoplankton standing crops with midstream of GR than GC station. The relationship between environmental parameters and phytoplankton dynamics was studied at the investigated station. As results, whereas water temperature and total phosphorus were represented the positive correlation, N/P ratio was remarkably exhibited negative correlation. From the results, it is suggested that the PCS of midstream of GR was more affected by MH station than GC station, and the changes of temperature, phosphorus concentration, and N/P ratio may be important factors on the PCS formation of midstream of GR.
General practitioners, internists, pediatricians, and family physicians are classified as so-called primary care physicians in the United States. We carried out this study for the purpose of answering the following question; "Who are the primary care physicians in Korea\ulcorner" We analyzed the 663, 154 claims which were drawn from the health insurance processing file made during the period of one month, April 1992 on the basis of systemic random sampling technique. The 663, 154 cases were matched with the doctor's file registered at the National Federation Medical Insurance by using the indivisual physician code number and analyzed according to the kind of specialty. If we follow the Geyman's definition of primary care physician in the United States, this study shows that they can take care of 43.2% of the total private clinic's claims in Korea. Provided that general practitioners and family physicians are considered the same way as in the United Kingdom, they could with only 8.3% of the total claims in Korea. The most frequent diseases are those which rank first to 46th in the total private clinic's claims. The proportion of the most frequent diseases was highest for pediatricians(90.4%) and followed by internists(81.4%), otolaryngologists(78.7%) and family physicians(76.5%). The proportion of the most frequent diseases in the most common 46 diseases was highest for radiologists(80.4%) and the next was as follows : general practitioners(78.3%), family physicians(67.4%), and internists(67.4%). We classified the most common 20 diseases of each specialty into 17 categories of ICD-9 and compared it with those of general practitioners. The specialists who had managed a similar disease pattern to those of general practitioners were identified as anesthesiologists, family physicians, general surgeons, and internists. Some specialists practicing at private clinics managed the diseases which were not quite appropriate for their specialties. After we evaluated each specialty by the most common diseases, the most frequent diseases, and the most frequent 20 diseases of each specialty in terms of the 17 categories of ICD-9, a tentative assumption is made that the primary physicians in the Republic of Korea are general practitioners, anesthesiologists, family physicians, internists, and general surgeons. This study has concluded that the categories of the primary care physicians are so diverse that their roles and distributions are distorted accordingly. Vigorous health policy efforts in correcting the malcomposition need to be made for the better provision of primary health care in Korea. in Korea.
