  • In this paper, a novel wavelength selectable multi-channel OADM(Optical Add/Drop Multiplexers) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The proposed OADM drops simultaneously more than one channel among many channels with small wavelength tuning by using one sampled grating and FBGs, Interchannel crosstalk (or interchannel rejection ratio) better than 20[dB] has been shown experimentally.

  • In this paper, we propose and demonstrate a novel channel-selectable multichannel optical add/drop multiplexer consisting of a sampled fiber grating and tunable fiber Bra99 gratings. The device adds and drops not only single channel, but also any predetermined multiple channels simultaneously with low interchannel crosstalk by wavelength tuning as small as 0.5 nm or less. The interchannel crosstalk better than 27㏈ has been shown experimentally.

  • Center of photon mass, defined as the center of axial photon distribution in each half, is proposed as a unified design parameter in quarter wavelength shifted(QWS) DFB lasers. Shown is the way the parameter is related to the threshold pain difference and uniformity in axial photon density, which determine single-frequency stability of DFB lasers. Also, a general rule for single-frequency DFB laser design is presented. Using the design rule, we propose a sampled grating QWS-DFB laser that has a wider $_KL$ range 0f 100% single-frequency yield.

  • We demonstrated numerically that both the chromatic dispersion and the dispersion slope could be compensated by using purely phase-sampled superstructure fiber Bragg gratings provided with chirp of coupling coefficient along the wavelength axis. Also, we propose a purely phase-sampled Bragg grating for dispersion and dispersion slope compensation by introducing a chirp in coupling coefficient and sampling function. The bandwidth of all reflected channels can be equalized.

  • Multi-wavelength Erbium-doped fiber(EDF) ring laser was developed by using a sampled fiber Bragg grating reflecting multiple wavelengths, which was formed by impressing periodical pressure on the outside of a fiber Bragg grating. The wavelength spacing was varied to 4.1nm, 1.41nm and 0.82nm, by pressing the grating with the pressure period $200{\mu}m$, $580{\mu}m$ and $1000{\mu}m$, respectively.

  • Based on a semiconductor optical amplifier and sampled fiber Bragg gratings, polarization-controlled waveband switching in multiwavelength fiber laser is successfully demonstrated at room temperature by using high polarization selectivity of a polarization beam splitter. A multiwavelength-switching operation between eight and six laser lines with signal to noise ratio over 35 dB and wavelength spacing of ${\sim}0.8nm$ has been successfully demonstrated. The switching displacement of the proposed laser was ${\sim}7.1nm$. The intensity unevenness between different laser lines was measured to be less than 6.5 dB. The switching displacement between wavebands (groups of contiguous wavelengths), wavelength channels, and their spacings can be flexibly designed by the selected comb filters.

  • We have demonstrated a high-power widely tunable sampled grating distributed Bragg reflector (SGDBR) laser integrated monolithically with a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) having a lateral tapered waveguide, which is the first to emit a fiber-coupled output power of more than 10 dBm using a planar buried heterostructure (PBH). The output facet reflectivity of the integrated SOA using a lateral tapered waveguide and two-layer AR coating of $TiO_2\;and\;SiO_2$ was lower than $3\;{\times}\;10^{-4}\;over$ a wide bandwidth of 85 nm. The spectra of 40 channels spaced by 50 GHz within the tuning range of 33 nm were obtained by a precise control of SG and phase control currents. A side-mode suppression ratio of more than 35 dB was obtained in the whole tuning range. Fiber-coupled output power of more than 11 dBm and an output power variation of less than 1 dB were obtained for the whole tuning range.

  • We demonstrate a beat frequency-Switchable dual-mode external cavity laser hybrid integrated on planar lightwave circuit with an FP-LD and a sampled grating as external reflector. The dual-mode external avity laser was able to switch its beat frequency from 132GHz to 406GHz by changing LD current from 50mA to 55mA.

  • As the demand of internet networks using backbone communication systems recently increased, the researches on the high-speed wideband optical communication systems are required. For high-speed optical communication systems, asymmetric sampled grating distributed feedback laser diodes (DFB-LDs) are developed and the reliability of DFB-LDs is examined. The reliability of DFB-LDs is performed by monitoring I-V and L-I characteristics and two degradation phenomena related to the electrical characteristics of LDs are observed during the life tests. The first degradation phenomenon by increasing the reverse current is considered as a formation of leakage current path enough to prevent lasing operation in lateral blocking layer near active region of lasers. The second degradation phenomenon by decreasing the forward current is considered as activation of non-radiative Auger recombination process by thermal energy and the second degradation phenomenon is recovered after the off-test period at room temperature Eventually, evaluating the reliability of DFB LDs can allow us to improved the manufacturability in high-volume manufacturing.

  • We constructed a simple wavelength readout system for a tunable fiber laser which was used for a fiber Bragg grating sensor array system. A quadrature sampling method was used to demodulate wavelength variations of the tunable laser which consisted of a SOA(semi-conductor optical amplifier) and a fiber-optic Fabry-Perot filter. Internal triggers, which have a 90 degree phase period, have been generated by using a double-pass Mach-Zehnder interferometer. From Lissajous plots with quadrature sampled data, a mean phase error of ${\sim}2.51$ mrad was obtained. From the wavelength readout experiments, an accurate and fast linear wavelength demodulation has been confirmed.
