A Speech Perception-Based Study of the Patterning of Sonorants in Consonant Clusters

  • This study explores sound alternations in a consonant cluster in which at least one consonant is a sonorant (a son/C cluster, hereafter). In this study, I argue that phonological processes affecting son/C clusters result from low perceptual salience rather than from the Syllable Contact Law as discussed in Vennemann (1988), Clements (1990), Rice & Avery (1991), Baertsch & Davis (2000), among others. That is, as a main factor motivating the alternations in the cluster, I consider contrasts of weak perceptibility triggered by phonetic similarity between two members of a cluster (Kawasaki 1982, Ohala 1992, 1993). Based on the findings from a typological survey in 31 different languages, I show that a speech perception-based account makes a correct prediction regarding the patterning of sonorant/sonorant sequences and that of obstruent/sonorant sequences, while the syllable contact account does not.

Citation-based Article Summarization using a Combination of Lexical Text Similarities: Evaluation with Computational Linguistics Literature Summarization Datasets

  • Citation-based article summarization is to create a shortened text for an academic article, reflecting the content of citing sentences which contain other's thoughts about the target article to be summarized. To deal with the problem, this study introduces an extractive summarization method based on calculating a linear combination of various sentence salience scores, which represent the degrees to which a candidate sentence reflects the content of author's abstract text, reader's citing text, and the target article to be summarized. In the current study, salience scores are obtained by computing surface-level textual similarities. Experiments using CL-SciSumm datasets show that the proposed method parallels or outperforms the previous approaches in ROUGE evaluations against SciSumm-2017 human summaries and SciSumm-2016/2017 community summaries.

Rethinking the US Presidential Election: Feminism and Big Data

  • The 2020 US Presidential Election was a highly-anticipated moment for our global society. During the election period, the most intriguing issue was who would be the winner-Trump or Biden? Among the possible main themes of the 2020 election, from the COVID-19 pandemic to racism, this study focused on feminism ('women') as a main component of Biden's victory. To explore the character of Biden's supporters, this paper focused on internet spaces as a source of public opinion. To guide the data analysis, this study employed four indices from empirical studies on Big Data analytics: issue salience, attention diversity, emotional mentioning, and semantic cohesion. The main finding of this study was that the representative keyword 'women' appeared more prevalently within content related to Biden than Trump, and the keyword pairs indicated that female voters were the main reason for Trump's failure but the root cause of Biden's victory. The results of this study indicated the role of the internet as a forum for public opinion and a fountain of political knowledge, which requires more rigorous investigation by researchers.

일부지역 치위생(학)과 학생들의 구강건강신념과 구강보건행태 관련요인 (Oral health beliefs and oral health behaviors related factors of dental hygiene students)

  • Objectives: The study was conducted to evaluate the effects of the students majoring in dental hygiene on their oral health beliefs and oral health behavior. Methods: The survey was conducted using selfadministered questionnaires targeting 619 female students majoring in dental hygiene at three Universities in k and J province. The stronger health oral belief means higher score in susceptibility, severity, benefit and salience, but the higher score in barrier means stronger recognition in obstacle. Results: There was significant correlation between susceptibility and experience of not-treated oral disease (OR [odds ratio] 2.40; 95% CI [confidence interval] 1.73-3.34)' and 'dental caries (OR 2.36; 95% CI 1.25-4.45)'. Benefit had significant correlation with 'visiting dental clinic (OR 1.58; 95% CI 1.14-2.19)'. Salience had significant correlation with 'experience of not-treated oral disease (OR 0.70; 95% CI 0.52-0.94)'. Barrier had significant correlation with 'visiting dental clinic (OR 0.73; 95% CI 0.56-0.95)' and 'removing oral plaque (OR 0.71; 95% CI 0.52-0.95)'. There was no significant correlation between oral health belief and 'using of oral hygiene device' or 'regular tooth brushing'. Conclusions: Diverse oral health behaviors were affected by susceptibility, benefit, salience and barrier in oral health belief. The programs for oral health education and preventing oral disease should be prepared to change oral health belief to promote the oral health systematically based on the results of this study.

치기공과 학생들의 구강건강관련행위에 따른 구강건강신념의 차이 (The difference of health belief model in the oral health promotion behaviors of dental technology students)

  • Purpose: This study aims to discover the degree of department of dental technology students' oral health recognition and to find out the differences of oral health beliefs depending on oral health behaviors. Method: The subjects in this study were the students who attended department of dental technology in Daejon, Daegu, Iksan. After a survey was conducted, the collected data were analyzed with SPSS 23.0. An analysis of frequency, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, correlation was used. Result: Among the general things related to oral health behaviors was the statistical significant differences(p<0.05) in the area of oral health belief depending on the opportunity of oral health education, attendance of oral health course, self-aware of oral health, the number of times of teeth brushing, teeth brushing status, experience and the degree of smoking. There was a positive correlation between the degree of susceptibility and that of response to severity, barrier, salience and benefit. Severity also showed the positive correlation with barrier. Higher barrier susceptibility meant higher salience and higher benefit. So was the correlation between benefit and salience. Conclusion: This study showed that college education should focus on the students' possible behaviors in order to convey the effective oral health knowledge.

중국의 이공계 강세 현상에 대한 고찰 (How Science-Engineering Graduates Become so Powerful Elites in China?)

  • 이 논문은 최근 한국사회에서 큰 관심의 대상으로 떠오른 중국의 이공계 강세 현상의 내용과 그 배경을 살펴본다. 지금까지 언론과 과학기술계를 중심으로 한 중국의 이공계 강세 현상에 대한 논의는 그 원인과 과정에 대한 논의는 도외시 한 채 결과적인 현상에만 주목하여 중국을 부러움의 대상으로 부각시켜왔다. 그러나 이 논문은 중국의 이공계 강세현상은 사회주의 국가건설과 문화혁명이라는 중국의 독특한 역사적 경험을 통해 형성된 것임을 보여준다. 사회주의 교육개혁이 중국사회에 인문사회교육은 무용지물이라는 인식을 심어주었다면 문화 대혁명은 한 걸음 더 나아가 인문사회계열의 학문을 공부하는 것이 정치적으로 위험하다는 인식을 확산시키는 계기가 되었다. 따라서 중국의 이공계 강세 현상은 매우 극단적인 정치적인 결정에 의해 형성된 기형적인 현상으로 정치에 의해 강요된 학문의 위계질서를 반영하고 있는 것이다. 또한 이공계 출신의 고위 공직자 비중이 높은 것도 이들이 대학에서 인문사회교육을 충실히 받았거나 이공계 졸업자에 대한 정책적 우대 때문이라기보다는 중국의 정치체제 특히 중국공산당의 독특한 인사제도를 통해 이루어진 것이다. 이러한 배경에 대한 이해 없이 결과적인 현상에만 주목하며 중국의 예와 한국의 예를 비교하는 것은 이공계 위기문제의 원인과 해결책에 대한 진단에 큰 오류를 가져올 수 있다는 점에서 주의를 요한다.

문양에 따른 소재의 감성이미지와 선호도 - 문양의 종류와 문양 색을 중심으로 - (Effects of Colors and Categories of Motifs on Evaluating Sensory Image of Fashion Fabrics)

  • The purpose of the study was to examine the effect of motif categories and motif colors on evaluating sensory image of fashion materials with the gestalt theory as the background. The research was conducted on a quasi experimental basis, with subjects numbering 187 male and 207 female college students. Data were collected in the period from march 19th to march 31st, 2007. A set of fabric stimuli and semantic differential scales were developed. The stimuli were thirteen fabric species(each measuring 12 by 13cm). Variables included; (a) motif colour(white, grey, pink and blue) (b) motif categories(plain, paisley, flower, stripes and zebra effect). The semantic differential scale to measure sensory image of fabric stimuli included 23 sets of bi-polar adjectives. The data were analysed by factor analysis and ANOVA and the major finding were as follows. 1) Four sensory dimensions emerged of importance: salience, attractiveness, comfort and softness. 2) The motif category effected on the four sensory image dimensions while the motif colour effected on salience, comfort and softness sensory dimensions. 3) An interaction effect was founded between motif category and motif colour. 4) Motif category showed significant effects on the preference and liking of the fashion, however the motif colour did not show any significant effects on the preference and liking. As a whole the results supported the gestalt theory and the results can be used for the marketing strategy for developing fashion fabrics.

Heuristic-based Korean Coreference Resolution for Information Extraction

  • The information extraction is to delimit in advance, as part of the specification of the task, the semantic range of the output and to filter information from large volumes of texts. The most representative word of the document is composed of named entities and pronouns. Therefore, it is important to resolve coreference in order to extract the meaningful information in information extraction. Coreference resolution is to find name entities co-referencing real-world entities in the documents. Results of coreference resolution are used for name entity detection and template generation. This paper presents the heuristic-based approach for coreference resolution in Korean. We constructed the heuristics expanded gradually by using the corpus and derived the salience factors of antecedents as the importance measure in Korean. Our approach consists of antecedents selection and antecedents weighting. We used three kinds of salience factors that are used to weight each antecedent of the anaphor. The experiment result shows 80% precision.

광고효과모형에 관한 문헌연구: 모형의 검토와 제언 (Discussion on'How Advertising Works': Review and Suggestions)

  • 본 연구는 주요 광고효과모형을 검토하여 광고효과의 발생과정에 대한 광고계의 주류적 인식을 살펴보고, 이를 통하여 광고효과 연구의 한계점과 해결방안을 제시하고자 한다. 문헌연구 결과, 기존의 광고효과 연구는 설득커뮤니케이션의 패러다임 안에서 브랜드태도의 변화에 초점을 맞추어 왔으며 광고효과의 다른 측면은 심도 있게 논의하지 못하였다는 점을 밝혔다. 저자는 급변하는 광고매체환경 속에서 브랜드태도 변화와는 구별되는 새로운 광고효과 연구의 필요성을 제시하고 특히 저관여모형에서 강조하는 브랜드 인식의 틀 제공, 브랜드친숙성, 브랜드현저성의 제고와 같은 보다 다양한 변인에 대한 학문적 관심이 필요하다는 점을 주장하였다.

동기이론에 근거한 재가 및 시설거주 노인의 건강행위 예측요인 분석 (Analyzing Motivational Factors to Predict Health Behaviors among Older Adults)

  • Purpose: The positive effects of health behaviors in older population are well recognized, but maintenance of health habits was more difficult than initiation. The purposes of the study were to identify predictors of health behavior based on motivation theories, and to analyze predicting power of motivational factors to explain health behaviors in older adults. Methods: The data were collected from older adults either institutionalized or living in the community. Total of 159 subjects with 72 years old in average were recruited for an interview. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis were utilized to analyze the data with age, residential type, and motivational variables. Results: The results of the multiple regression analysis showed that age and residential type explained 3% of variance in health behaviors (F=3.705, p=0.027). When motivational variables were entered, additional 56.9% of variance were explained by the model (F=33.275, p< 0.001). Among motivational variables, perceived benefits was the most important variable (${\beta}=0.346$, t=4.582, p<0.001), followed by self efficacy, emotional salience, and perceived barriers. Conclusion: Considering the importance of each motivational variable, the focus of intervention strategies to assist older adults to maintain health behaviors should be on modifiable and important motivational variables, such as self-efficacy, perceived benefits and barriers, and emotional salience.
