  • Herbicide mixtures, butachlor + naproanilide, CG113 + naproanilide and benthiocarb + naproanilide were tested in order to control Sagittaria pygmaea Miq., one of the most serious perennial weeds in paddy field of Honam area. 92% of tuber of Sagittaria pygmaea Miq. was distributed within 9cm from the soil surface and number of emerged Sagittaria pygmaea Miq. increased until 40 days after rice transplanting but decreased thereafter. Number and dry weight of survived Sagittaria pygmaea Miq. were much less in butachlor + naproanilide, CG 113 + naproanilide and benthiocarb + naproanilide treatments than perfluidone and it was controlled by up to 95% by mixture treatments. Number of rhizome of Sagittaria pygmaea Miq. was decreased by all herbicide treatments and especially mixture treatment significantly reduced rhizome formation compared to perfluidone and 2.4 -D treatments. CG113 + naproanilide treatment caused phytotoxicity that tip of leaf sticked to leaf sheath curvedly in Indica ${\times}$ Japonica rice, Iri 358, but it was recovered within 10 days after herbicide treatment.

  • Four methods of vegetation analysis were compared to determine the most suitable method to use in transplanted rice. The highest number of weed species, 14 was obtained with the list quadrat method while the least number, 8 was obtained with the line intercept method. The clip quadrat method tended to overestimate weed species with a low moisture content such as Sagittaria trifolia L. and Ludwigia prostrata Roxb while for the list quadrat method, weed species with a high moisture content such as Sagittaria pygmaea Miq. and Monochoria vaginalis (Burm. f) Pres 1 were overestimated. With the line intercept method, weed species having conspicuous leaf blades such as S. trifolia and Potamogeton distinctus Benn. were dominant. Of the methods tested, the line intercept method was the least desirable because it accounted for the least number of weed species. Any of the others could be use for vegetation analysis without any significant problems arising. However, preference was given to the point quadrat method because of the ease of measurement. It was also less tedious and less time consuming than the other methods.

  • The experiment was carried out to clarify the root competition between rice and paddy weed. Sagittaria pygmaea, under field condition. Rice variety Joongwonbyeo(Tongil type) and Sangpoongbyeo(Japonica type) were transplanted and Sagittaria tuber was planted artificially at planting density of untreated control, 4, 8 and 16 tubers/$m^2$, respectively. The number of roots, root fresh weight and root activity of rice and Sagittaria were measured at 30, 45, 60 and 75 days after transplanting. The results obtained were as follows. The root growth of Joongwonbyeo was decreased greatly according to the increase of Sagittaria tuber density compared with Sangpoongbyeo. On the other hand, the root growth of Sagittaria competed with Joongwonbyeo was depressed at 45 days after transplanting, and the one competed with Sangpoongbyeo was depressed at 60 days after transplanting. It was concluded that the competition ability of Sangpoongbyeo against Sagittaria was greater than Joongwonbyeo mainly due to the tall height and large tillers. And also the root growth of Sagittaria competed with Joongwonbyeo was more depressed than that of Sangpoongbyeo.

  • To study ecological characteristics of Sagitiaria pygmaea and Sagittaria trifolia occurring in Korea their propagules were collected from 3 locations (Sagittaria pygmaea: Chuncheon, Suweon, Milyang; Sagittaria trifolia: Suweon, Iri, Jeonju) in 1981, cultured and replanted 4 times (May 20, June 5, June 20, July 5) in 1982. Sagitraria pygmaea from Suweon flowered earlier than those from Chuncheon and Milyang in the plants planted on May 20, but this was reversed in another planting dates. Three storied inflorescence was observed newly in Sagittaria pygmaea. Sagittaria pygmaea from Iri and Jeonju had more number of tillers, but less number of tubers per tiller than those from Suweon. Sagittaria rrifolia from Chuncheon flowered earlier than those from Suweon and Milyang. Sagirtaria trifolia from Milyang was narrower in the upper leaf width and less in the number of tubers per plant than those from Chuncheon and Suweon. Each of local collections may be regarded as different ecotype based on the above differences.

  • Sagittaria pygmaea Miquel is widely infested and is the most dominant perennial weed in paddy field in Korea. This study was carried out in order to clarify the factors influencing tuber production and the competition ecology. The tuberization capacity in the paddy field transplanted with the small seedlings of rice was higher than in the paddy field transplanted with the vigor seedlings of rice. The stage which rice plants were most damaged by S. pygmaea plants was the period from 31 to 37 days after transplanting. According to the increasing of Eleocharis acicularis Roem. in the condition of rice cultivation, the number of S. pygmaea plants was remarkably reduced. Small size tubers planted within deep soil produced less tubers than large size tubers did. The number of plants and tubers were remarkably increased under the high levels of fertilization. Phosphorus was essential as well as nitrogen for tuberization. And the tuberization capapcity was different with the organic matter content in soil and with the soil moisture.

  • For the effective control of weeds in mechanically transplanted paddy field weeding effects of naproanide ${\alpha}$-(${\beta}$-naphthoxy) propion anilide], pyrazolate [4-2, 4-dichlorobenzoyl)-1, 3-dimethyl pyrazol-5-yl-p-tolune sulphanate], chlormethoxynil (2, 4-dichloro-phenyl-4-nitro-3-methoxy phenyl ether), SL-49 [1-3dimethyl-4(2, 4dichlorobenzoyl)-5-phenacyloxy pyrazole], ACN (3-chloro-2-amino-l, 4-naphthoquinone) either alone or in combination with butachlor (2-chlor-2, 6-diethyl-N-buthoxymethyl acetanilide) were compared. Pyrazolate and SL-49 were most effective for the control of Sagittaria pygmaea MIQ. and Potomogeton distinctus A. BENN. including most annual weeds. Weeding effect of butachlor alone was very high for annuals, good for Cyperus serotinus ROTTB. and poor for S. pygmaea and P. distinctus. But the weeding effect of the combination of butachlor and pyrazolate was stronger than that of butachlor alone and therefore this mixture was effective for S. pygmaea, P. distinctus and C. serotinus including all the annual weeds. The combination of butachlor and SL-49 showed the same tendency as the combination of butachlor and pyrazolate. Naproanilide was not effective for the control of Echinochlor crusgalli P. BEAUV and less effective for Monochoria vaginalis PRESL, but excellent for S. pygmaea. By mixing butachlor with naproanilide weeding, spectrum for annuals and S. pygmaea was much increased by that for P. distinctus and C. serotinus was not satisfactory. ACN was not satisfactory for the control of all the tested weeds but the weeding effect was increased in general by mixing with butachlor. Chlormethoxynil was excellent for the control of annual weeds but it has no effect on C. serotinus, S. pygmaea and P. distinctus showing some initial controling effect but these weeds regrew afterwards. The weeding activity of ACN increased in combination with butachlor and the residual activity was stronger than that of ACN alone. A light crop injury was found at the initial period after treatments in all treated plots. The yield from all treated plots except those from plots treated with ACN, butachlor and naproanilide were not significantly different from the band weeded plot.

  • The nationwide weed survey was conducted in lowland rice fields over whole country of Korea in 1992 in order to determine a change of weed community and to identify a major dominant weed species and/or problem weed. Based on morphological characteristics of weeds, population ratio of broad leaf weed was 42.6%, grasses weed-9.0%, sedges-33.4% and others were 15.0%. Annual weed was 33.4% while perennial weed was 66.6% in terms of life cycle of weeds. Meanwhile, there was different weed occurrence as affected by planting method of the rice plant. In hand transplanted paddy fields predominant weed species was Sagittaria trifolia L., Monochoria vaginalis Presl., and Aneilema japonica Kunth. In machine transplanted rice fields of infant and young rice seedling Eleocharis kuroguwai Ohwi. and S. trifolia L. were more predominant. There was high occurrence of M. vaginalis, Echinochloa crus-galli L., and Leesia japonica Makino in water seeding while E. crus-galli and Cyperus serotinus Rottb. were predominant weed species in dry seeded rice. Monoculture of the rice plant would cause to high occurrence of E. kuroguwai, S. trifolia, M. vaginalis, E. crus-galli, and Sagittaria pygmaea Miq and there was higher population of S. trifolia, S. pygmaea, M. vaginalis, E crus-galli, and E. kuroguwai in double cropping system based on rice culture. In particular, there was high different weed occurrence under different transplanting times. E. kuroguwai, S. trifolia, S. pygmaea, M. vaginalis, and C. serotinus were higher population at the transplanting of 25 May and S. trifolia, E crus-galli, C. serotinus, and M. vaginalis at 10 June and S. pygmaea, E. kuroguwai, M. vaginalis, S. trifolia, and E. crusgalli at 25 June in Korea, respectively. Autumn tillage in terms of tillage time would cause more predominant weed species such as S. trifolia, E. kuroguwai, M. vaginalis, and S. pygmaea while spring tillage was higher population of E. kuroguwai, S. trifolia, E. crusgalli, M. vaginalis, and S. pygmaea. In plain area of paddy field there was higher occurrence of E. kuroguwai, S. trifolia, M. vaginalis, E. crus-galli, and S. pygmaea and in mid-mountainous area S. trifolia, E. kuroguwai, M. vaginalis, E. crus-galli, and Ludwigia prostrate Roxb. while in mountainous area S. trifolia, M. vaginalis, Potamogeton distinctus Ben., E. kuroguwai, and E. crus-galli were. In 1992 the most ten predominant weed species at the rice field of Korea based on summed dominant ratio(SDR) were E. kuroguwai > S. trifolia > E. crus-galli > M. vaginalis > S. pygmaea > C. serotinus > L. prostrate > P. distinctus > A. japonica > Scirpus juncoides Roxb.

  • The experiment was carried out to evaluated the interaction between perfluidone(2-methyl-4-phenylsulphonyltrifluoromethylsulphoanilide) and bifenox(2,4-dichlorophenyl-3-methoxycarbonyl-4-nitrophenylether). A synergistic effect was found between perfluidone and bifenox. The highest synergistic effect on Echinochloa crus-galli (L.). Beauv. was obtained when 10 g a.i./10a of perfluidone was combined with 24.9 g a.i./10a of bifenox. However, bifenox should be increased to 33.3, g a.i./10a to obtain the highest synergistic effect when applied to Cyperus serotinus Rottb. at 1.0-1.5 leaf stage. Sagittaria pygmaea Miq. at 0.5-1.0sleaf stage was completely controlled by the lowest combination rate employed.

  • The experiment was crried out to evaluated the herbicidal properties of bensulfuron methyl [methyl 2-[[[[[(4, 6-dimethoxy pyrimidine-2yl) amino] carbonyl] amino] sulfonyl] methyl] benzoate]. No phytotoxicity was observed when bensulfuron methyl was applied at 3 and 6 g a.i./ 10a while the application rate 12 g a.i./10a slightly retared the growth of rice. The phytotoxicity decreased as the application time was delayed. The effect of application rate, leaching grade, transplanting depth, soil type and temperature on crop injury was little. Japonica variety (Dong-Jin) was more sensitive to bensulfuron methyl than indica X japonica variety (Sam-Kang). Bensulfuron methyl controlled effectively perennial weeds such as Sagittaria pygmaea Miq., Potamogeton diatinctus A. Benn., Cyperus serotinus Rottb., Sagittaria trifolia L., Eleocharis kuroguwai Ohwi. including most annual weeds except Echinochloa crus galli P. Beauv. The effect slightly decreased with lowering the temperature increasing the leaching grade. Application time and soil type employed did not affect the weeding effect.

  • Herbicidal effectivity on perennial paddy weeds such as Sagittaria pygmaea Miq. and Eleocharis kuroguwai Ohwi was evaluated. Herbicides used were butachlor [2-chloro-2, 6-dietyl-N(butoxymethyl)-acetanilide], benthiocarb [S-(4-chlorobenzy)-N, N-diethyl-thiocarbamate], molinate (S-ethyhexahyaro-l-Hazpine-carbothiate], SW-751, Chlormethoxynil (2.4-dichlorophenyl-3-methoxy-4-nitrophenyl-ether), CNP (2.4.6-trichlorophenyl-4-nitrophenylether),oxadiazon [2-tertbutyl-4-(2.4-dichloro-S-isopropoxyphenyl)-5-OXO-1.3.4-Oxadiazoline], dinuron [1-dimethyl-benthyl)-3-pheratrylurea], bentazon [3-isopropyl-IH-2.1.3-benzothiadiazine-(4)3H-one-2.2-dioxide], ACN (3-chloro-2-amino-l.4-naphthoquinone), MCPB [4-(2-methyl-4chlorophenoxy), butyric acid], 2.4-D (sodium 2.4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid), MCP) sodium 2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxy acetic acid), SST-5, TH 63. Graszin D (Bentazon/2.4-D) and Graszin M (Bentazon/MCP) Herbicidal effectivity was divided into three types. Type I was the complete control both leaf and tuber, and SW-751 was belonged to this type. Type II was the partial control that exhibit complete control within certain period after herbicide application. After a certain period, however, the lateral bud have the germinability and grow normally, there after. Chloromethoxynil, CNP, ACN, and Oxadiazon were belonged to this group. Type III was no control at all. For E. kuroguwai, application of CNP, Chloromethoxnil, Oxadiazon and SW-751 gave good control in the early stage shile 2.4-D, MCP, bentazon and glaszin-D controlled well the intermediate stage application. Based on this results, E. kuroguwai can be controlled by herbicide application either in the early stage or in the intermediate stage.
