A Study on the Reliability of Software for Railway Signalling Systems (철도신호제어용 소프트웨어 신뢰도 모델링에 관한 연구)

  • Reliability of the Railway signaling system which is safety critical is determined by reliability of hardware and software. Reliability of hardware is easily predicted and demonstrated through lots of different studies and environmental tests, while that of software is estimated by the iterative test outcomes so estimates of reliability will depend on the inputs. Combinations of inputs to and outputs from the software may be mostly combinatoric and therefore all the combinations could not be tested. As a result, it has been more important to calculate reliability by means of a simpler method. This paper identifies the reliability prediction equation applicable to reliability prediction for railway signaling system software, and performs the simulation of onboard equipment of automatic train control for high speed train to review reliability prediction and validity.

  • Recent advances in computer technology have brought more dependence on software to train control systems. Hence, the safety assurance of the vital software running on the railway system is very critical task and yet, not many works have been done. While much efforts have been reported to improve the safety of electronic hardware, not so much systematic approaches to evaluate the safety of software, especially for the vital software running on board train controllers. In this paper, we propose the guide line of actually applicable software safety assessment in train control systems. And we demonstrate the results of developing a new tool based on web system version for software assessment management.

  • 내장형 시스템의 기능이 복잡해지면서, 내장형 소프트웨어에 대한 테스팅이 중요하게 인식되고 있다. 특히 원자력 발전소 계통 기기와 같이 안전에 대한 치명도가 높은 Safety-Critical Embedded System일수록 탑재되는 내장형 소프트웨어에 대한 철저한 테스팅이 요구되기 때문에 본 논문에서는 대상 시스템에 탑재되는 소프트웨어 테스트를 중심으로 하여 Safety-Critical Embedded System을 위한 테스트 프로세스 및 이에 필요한 테스팅 기법을 제안한다.

  • The train control and monitoring system (TCMS) is an on board computer system in railway vehicles performing the control, supervisory and diagnostic functions of the complete train system. This system replaces a lot of hard-wired relays and minimizes the necessary vehicle wiring thus increasing the reliability of the train. It is also one of more important equipment on vehicle to implement much higher safety and reliability train system. We studied a software design technique of TCMS using a CASE tool that is a kind of safety critical software engineering tool (SCADE). This tool has mainly four functions such as the graphical editor, the document maker, tile automatically code generator, and the test simulator. The several functions of TCMS are implemented in this software easily programmed using a functional block diagram and a graphic programming language. We applied to automatically generated TCMS modules on the SCADE each functional block for the Standard type EMU in Korea. We performed the combination test using TCMS simulator and the running test in Seoul subway 7 Line. We proved that this technique is more useful for the software design of TCMS in urban transit

  • Recent advances in computer technology have brought more dependence on software to railway systems. Hence, the safety assurance of the vital software running on the railway system is very critical task and yet, not many works have been done. While much efforts have been reported to improve electronic hardware's safety, not so much systematic approaches to evaluate software's safety. In this paper, we suggested an automated analysis tool for S/W change impact in railway system, and presented its result of implementation. The analysis items in the implemented tool had referred to the international standards in relation to the software for railway system, such as IEC 61508 and IEC 62279. In these international standards, 'change impact analysis' for railway system S/W has to be required mandatorily. The proposed tool can be utilized at the assessment stage and also the software development stage.

  • To assure quality of safety critical software, software should be developed in accordance with software development procedures and rigorous software verification and validation should be performed. Software verification is the formal act of reviewing, testing or checking, and documenting whether software components comply with the specified requirements for a particular stage of the development phase [1]. New software verification methodology was developed and was applied to the Shutdown System No. 1 and 2(SDS1,2) for Wolsong 2, 3 and 4 nuclear power plants by Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute(KAERI) and Atomic Energy of Canada Limited(AECL) in order to satisfy new regulation requirements of Atomic Energy Control Board(AECB). Software verification methodology applied to SDS1 for Wolsong 2, 3 and 4 project will be described in this paper. Some errors were found by this methodology during the software development for SDS1 and were corrected by software designer. Output from Wolsong 2, 3 and 4 project have demonstrated that the use of this methodology results in a high quality, cost-effective product.

In this paper, we have developed the static software testing tool for railway signaling, especially Fagan Inspection module and checklists supporting module. This static testing tool for railway signaling can be utilized at the assessment phase, and also usefully at the software development stage also. It is anticipated that it will be greatly helpful for the evaluation on the software for railway signalling system.

  • 오늘날 우리가 사용하고 있는 시스템은 날이 갈수록 규모 면에서 대형화되고, 기능면에서 복잡해지고 있다. 이런 복잡성의 증가로 시스템 에러 발생가능성은 더욱 높아졌다. 특히, safety-critical 시스템의 경우 에러가 발생했을 때 인간과 생태계에 엄청난 영향을 미치기 때문에 더욱 신중한 개발 과정이 필요하다. 따라서 정형기법을 이용한 safety-critical 시스템의 개발방법론이 나오게 되었다. 본 논문에서는 대표적인 safety-critical 시스템인 원자력 발전소 시스템에서 Digital Plant Protection System(DPPS)를 가지고 어떻게 방법론이 적용되는지를 보여준다. Software Cost Reduction(SCR)이라는 정형 명세 도구로 명세를 하였고, SPIN 이라는 정형 검증 도구로 그 특성(property)을 검증하였다.

  • As scale of software has been expanded and complicated, it is difficult to detect hazards which induce functional failure of software. Functional failure of safety-critical system (nuclear power plant, air traffic control systems, railway operating system) could result in a disaster (personal injury, environmental pollution). Therefore, it is necessary to conduct a safety analysis for preventing functional failure and increasing safety of the software. However, there are some reasons (time and effort problem, low knowledge of various safety analysis techniques, selecting conventional technique in company, organization) which disturb selecting an apposite one. This paper presents some traditional safety analysis techniques, recently presented techniques and combined models. We expect that it helps stakeholders to choice adequate one for target system.

  • A safety critical system is a system that leads to injury of people, damage of property and environment due to functional failures or occurrence of undesired condition. Therefore, to ensure the safety of a system, system engineers should consider the inherent hazards of the system at design phase of the system development, and also should design the prevention actions to minimize damage when an accident occurred. The objective of these actions is preventing the serious damage from accidents that can occur due to unforeseen circumstance. Recently, many studies have been performed to identify and analyze their hazards at design phase of safety critical systems. This paper suggests a safety analysis technique for analyzing the collision among those prevention actions to reduce accident and its effect by the collision of these actions that did not mentioned in previous studies. Through the proposed technique, it would improve robustness of safety and would help the design of prevention actions into system for the occurrence of accidents.
