  • Structures, systems, and components (SSCs) important to safety of nuclear facilities shall be designed, fabricated, erected, and tested to quality standards commensurate with the importance of the safety functions. Although SSC classification guidelines for nuclear power plants have been well established and applied, those for research reactors have been only recently established by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Korea has operated a pool-type research reactor (the High Flux Advanced Neutron Application Reactor) and has recently exported another pool-type reactor (Jordan Research and Training Reactor), which is being built in Jordan. Korea also has a plan to build one more pool-type reactor, the Kijang Research Reactor, in Kijang, Busan. The safety classification of SSCs for pool-type research reactors is proposed in this paper based on the IAEA methodology. The proposal recommends that the SSCs of pool-type research reactors be categorized and classified on basis of their safety functions and safety significance. Because the SSCs in pool-type research reactors are not the pressure-retaining components, codes and standards for design of the SSCs following the safety classification can be selected in a graded approach.

  • This study is plan to show what kinds of problems we have and how we can overcome problems about occupational safety and health education and training system in Korea, Some features which advanced countries had were found and characterized as follows; First, advanced countries realized the importance of safety and health education on the role of preventing accident and they had varieties of training and education programs on the industrial safety and health for employer and worker. Second, there were many safety and health education programs and grants which especially focused to the small businesses. Third, they had also several programs to induce employer and worker's concerning about the safety and health education voluntarily, In conclusion, we introduced some inducing models, and proposed to revise contents of the education programs and to increase participation of other parties in safety and health education market so that could vitalize our safety and health education and training.

  • The current autonomous vehicle competitions are dominated by a few leading research institutions and universities. Since the leading research groups have been able to accumulate their knowledge and to develop their own algorithms for autonomous vehicle for many years, the technology gap seems too big for other followers to catch up with. On the other hand, recent researches predict that there would be a sharp rise in demand for engineers with background in autonomous vehicle technology. Therefore, it would be warranted to further expand the base of the academia and autonomous vehicle industry. In an effort to achieve this goal, it would be beneficial to hold a new format of autonomous vehicle competition event where undergraduate students can play a leading role. So, this study is to analyze the current autonomous vehicle competitions and thus to establish a strategic plan to develop a unique and improved competition event. This study investigates the pros and cons of the domestic and international autonomous vehicle competitions. Based on the analysis for the current autonomous vehicle competitions, the authors suggest a strategic plan to initiate an autonomous vehicle competition. To implement the aforementioned strategic plan, it is necessary to develop a systematic environment where the education and communication are actively available. Through the strategic plan the authors propose, the newly launching autonomous vehicle competition will able to encourage the undergraduate students and professors to dive in the cutting-edge technology thereby increasing technology competitiveness.

  • The main purpose of this study is to analyze the impact of the cost estimates on the construction work in residential apartment housing facilities. The planning work of facility construction is roughly divided into five main tasks which are further broken down into the following: process plan (P1-P6), construction plan (C1-C5), environmental management plan (E1-E4), quality management plan (Q1-Q5) and the safety management plan (S1-S5). In this study these tasks were classified into 25 detailed planning duties and a statistical analysis was performed on each one to determine its impact on cost. Finally this study derives from major planning tasks for effective cost management through correlation between planning tasks, cost indicators and t-test.

  • The Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) is the basis of global efforts to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons. In Republic of Korea, safety measures are integrated with NPT approval through agreements with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Safeguards Agreement. In contrast, Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), initially an NPT member, withdrew, refusing IAEA nuclear inspections. This inhibits the precise management of DPRK's nuclear facilities and limits access to related information. The Korean Peninsula, politically divided, sees DPRK in control of nuclear weapons. Although the IAEA periodically evaluates DPRK's nuclear facilities, there's a research gap in contamination and site management with nuclear activities. Recognizing the presence or absence of such activities is crucial for peaceful nuclear endeavors. This proposal suggests the number and locations for environmental sample collection using the Visual Sample Plan (VSP) software for nuclear activity analysis. VSP software is sample collection locations and quantities through statistical tests on collected data, ensuring reliability for decision-making. The proposal identifies sites and facilities for nuclear activity analysis based on IAEA safety reports, utilizing the software's embedded methods. Suggested sampling locations for undisclosed nuclear activities employ VSP's embedded techniques, including 'Show that at least some high % of the sampling area is acceptable' to confirm contamination and 'Estimate the Mean' to evaluate the average contamination level.

  • The fire protection system of Nuclear Power Plants(NPPs) is an integrated system that is applied multi-field technology. So, it needs synthetic design and analysis, that is, the plan of fire protection, fire compartment, fire detection, fire suppression, and success of safety shut down, etc. In case of a fire in NPPs, secure the safety of reactor and minimize the radioactivity contamination. For this purpose, perform the fire risk analysis and make up the deducted problem through the improvement of design or the change of operation process.

  • In Korea, the number of railroad accidents is decreasing, but the scale of railroad accidents tend to be growing large. On considering the opening of the high speed railway in 2004, the problem of railroad safety is very important. The purpose of this study is to make plans for improving railroad safety of Korea. To make this plan, we generally analyzed the future railway traffic, and reviewed annual statistics of railroad accidents trend and case studies of foreign railway accidents.
