  • The process of designing and building a human-powered aircraft (HPA) and its performance analysis are introduced in this paper. Light Bros, the Chungnam National University HPA team, has developed Volante, a HPA, to compete in the 2012 exhibition of human-powered aircraft hosted by Korea Aerospace Research Institute. The power train system is composed of a two-blade propeller and Bevel-type gear and the ground test bed is built to simulate the operation. A study has been made to find a efficient propeller based upon the test result of thrust and power available from a pilot under various propeller conditions and running time. The load and structural analysis is conducted for the glider-shaped wing made of composite material which has very high aspect ratio. The spar is analyzed using finite element modeling followed by the comparison of its displacement and strain on structural test. As a result, the performance and safety is confirmed.

  • Background: A variety of inorganic scintillators have been developed and improved for use in radiation detection and measurement, and in situ gamma-ray spectrometry in the environment remains an important area in nuclear safety. In order to verify the feasibility of promising scintillators in an actual environment, a performance test is necessary to identify gamma-ray peaks and calculate the radioactivity from their net count rates in peaks. Materials and Methods: Among commercially available scintillators, $LaBr_3(Ce)$ scintillators have so far shown the highest energy resolution when detecting and identifying gamma-rays. However, the intrinsic background of this scintillator type affects efficient application to the environment with a relatively low count rate. An algorithm to subtract the intrinsic background was consequently developed, and the in situ calibration factor at 1 m above ground level was calculated from Monte Carlo simulation in order to determine the radioactivity from the measured net count rate. Results and Discussion: The radioactivity of six natural radionuclides in the environment was evaluated from in situ gamma-ray spectrometry using an $LaBr_3(Ce)$ detector. The results were then compared with those of a portable high purity Ge (HPGe) detector with in situ object counting system (ISOCS) software at the same sites. In addition, the radioactive cesium in the ground of Jeju Island, South Korea, was determined with the same assumption of the source distribution between measurements using two detectors. Conclusion: Good agreement between both detectors was achieved in the in situ gamma-ray spectrometry of natural as well as artificial radionuclides in the ground. This means that an $LaBr_3(Ce)$ detector can produce reliable and stable results of radioactivity in the ground from the measured energy spectrum of incident gamma-rays at 1 m above the ground.

  • The objective of this study was to develop a new method for estimating gas interchangeability for 13A gas appliances. The three basic principles for the development of this method are as follows: 1) to derive the secondary interchangeability factor that represents the effect of gas composition, in addition to the major interchangeability factor, i.e., Wobbe index; 2) to test every type of and each maker's domestic gas appliances that are widely used in our country, particularly including premixed gas appliances; and 3) to develop a simple estimation method. On the basis of these principles, thirty representative gas appliances were tested, and as a result, a simple two-dimensional interchangeability diagram consisting of Wobbe index and relative density was developed. Unlike conventional methods for estimating interchangeability, this method can be applied to premixed gas appliances, which have a narrow stable flame range, and the interchangeability range of this method then becomes narrower than that of the conventional methods.

  • There are a number of risks in constructing tunnel-structures. Therefore, the precise and rapid observation about inside deformation of the tunnel is required to prevent these risks from occurring and to secure safety. But currently, the real situation is that the crown settlement, cavity deformation and ground surface settlement rely upon the universal mensuration which uses total station or various kinds of measuring instruments. Recently, according to improvement and progress of measuring technology, three-dimensional laser scanning is used as the method to provide data for maintaining structures. It solves the reliability problem of measuring method for the transformational volume of existing structures, provides data that enables to judge visually by three-dimensioning the shape change of structures and makes it possible to deliberate speedy countermeasure. And it can also be efficiently used in the structure maintenance and field measurement.

  • The Minamata Convention on Mercury entered into force on August 16, 2017. It requires Parties to the Convention to control and, where feasible, reduce mercury emissions from the listed sources. To implement the Convention, Japan amended the Air Pollution Control Law and added clauses that force operators to control their mercury emissions below emission limit values (ELVs). The ELVs have been established separately for new and existing sources, targeting the source categories listed in the Convention: coal-fired boilers, smelting and roasting processes used in the production of non-ferrous metals (lead, zinc, copper and industrial gold), waste incineration facilities and cement clinker production facilities. The factors used to establish the ELVs include the present state of mercury emissions from the targeted categories as well as the mercury content in fuels and materials, best available techniques (BATs) and best environmental practices (BEPs) to control and reduce mercury emissions and ELVs or equivalent standards to control mercury emissions in other countries. In this regard, extensive data on mercury emissions from flue gas and the mercury content of fuels and materials were collected and analyzed. The established ELVs range from $8{\mu}g/Nm^3$ for new coal-fired boilers to $400{\mu}g/Nm^3$ for existing secondary smelting processes used in the production of copper, lead and zinc. This paper illustrates the ELVs for the targeted source categories, explaining the rationales and approaches used to set the values. The amended Law is to be enforced on April 1, 2018. From future perspectives, checks of the material flow of mercury, following up on the state of compliance, review of the ELVs and of the measurement and monitoring methods have been noted as important issues.

  • Early detection of toxic gases, such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), is important for safety and environmental protection. However, the conventional detection methods require long-term measurement times and expensive equipment. In this study, we propose a thin-film-type chemical sensor for VOCs, which consists of self-assembled monosize nanoparticles for 3-D photonic crystal structures and polydimthylsiloxane (PDMS) film. It is operated without any external power source, is truly portable, and has a fast response time. The structure color of the sensor changes when it is exposed to VOCs, because VOCs induce a swelling of the PDMS. Therefore, using this principle of color change, we can create a thin-film sensor for immediate detection of various types of VOCs. The proposed device evidences that a fast response time of just seconds, along with a clear color change, are successfully observed when the sensor is exposed to gas-phase VOCs.

  • Depending on the operating characteristics, track circuit is installed for the purpose of direct or indirect control of the signal device, point switch machine and other security device. These are mainly used for train detection, transmission of information, broken rail detection and transmission of return current. Especially, the return current is related to signal system, power system and catenary line, and track circuit systems. It is one of the most important component shall be dealt for the safety of track side staff and for the protection of railway-related electrical system according to electrification. Therefore, an accurate analysis of the return current is needed to prevent the return current unbalance and the system induced disorder and failure due to an over current condition. Also, if the malfunction occurred by the return current harmonics, it can cause problems including train operation interruption. In this paper, we presented measurement and analysis method at return current and it's harmonics by high speed train operation on the honam high speed line.

  • The finite element method and statistics of the convergence measurement are useful method of the stability analysis of the tunnel adjacent to the pier. It is the purpose of the this case study to certificate of validity of the application of those methods. The safety of the pilot tunnel method and LW pre-grouting has been evaluated from the FEM analysis. The three-dimensional finite element method is carried out for the decision of the level of stress redistribution at the two-dimensional numerical analysis. An analysis of the convergence is carried out by the estimation of preceding convergence at tunnel excavation. F-examination is applied for this estimation. As results of that analysis, The F-value is from 10.81 to 158.74 and the coefficient of determination is from 0.82 to 0.99. An analysis of convergence is carried out by using regression analysis. Consequently, it is shown that the convergence can be modeled as following function C(t)=a[1-exp(-bt)].
