  • Savings in weight using lightweight materials such as aluminum alloy can lead to increase fuel economy. However, compared to steel, aluminum alloys have a lower strength for an equivalent life cycle. To reduce the weight of automobiles, research is being performed on the fabrication of lighter and stronger torque struts without having to sacrifice the safety of automotive components. In this study, a weight reduction design process for torque struts is proposed that is based on varying von-Mises stress contours using an aluminum alloy (A356) having a tensile strength of 245 MPa, instead of STKM11A steels. The optimized design can reduce the weight of the original steel torque strut by over 42% and it can contribute to the design of light-weight components and to the safe design of torque struts.

  • To reduce the cost and the time of transport in Eurasian railroad networks such as TKR(Trans-Korea Railway), TCR(Trans-China Railway) and TSR(Trans-Siberia Railway) owing to the problem of different track gauges (narrow/standard/broad gauge), it is important to develop the gauge-adjustable wheelset(GAW) system to adapt easily to these gauges. The Korean GAW system is developing and will be adapting to the brand new freight trains' to improve the conventional overseas GAW system. In this study, structural and durability analyses are performed from the viewpoint of the safe-life design. The core parts of the system might be safe in range of $1{\times}10^7$ cycles from the result of durability analysis. Moreover, to examine the safety of the system while running on a track, rig fatigue test was performed according to UIC code. The safety of the Korean GAW system is demonstrated through testing that all safety-relevant conditions are satisfied.

  • To improve the reliability of a safety assessment using a fire simulation in domestic PBD, the evaluation method of ASET considering the uncertainties of the input parameters and numerical model of fire simulation was carried out. To this end, a cinema and officetel were selected as the representative fire spaces. The main results were as follows. Considering the uncertainty of the heat release rate, which has the greatest effect on the major physical quantities presented in the life safety standard, significant changes in temperature, CO, and visibility occurred. In addition, when the bias factors reflecting the uncertainty of the numerical model were applied, there were no significant changes in temperature and CO concentration. On the other hand, the visibility was increased considerably due to the low prediction performance of smoke concentration in FDS. Finally, the reason why the physical quantity determining the ASET in domestic PBD is mainly visibility was discussed, and the application of uncertainty of the input parameters and numerical model in a fire simulation was suggested for an accurate ASET evaluation.

  • Background/Aims: Abexol is a mixture of primary aliphatic alcohols purified from beeswax (Apis mellifera), that produces anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and gastroprotective effects, as well as it is safe and well tolerated. To investigate and compare the efficacy and safety of Abexol (suspension versus tablets) in patients with gastrointestinal symptoms. Methods: Monocentric study, open-label, randomized design, with two parallel groups receiving Abexol tablets (150 mg/d) or Abexol suspension (75 mg/d) for 8 weeks. Primary efficacy variable (significant improvement in the total score of Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale [GSRS]). Significant reduction in the intensity of the gastrointestinal-symptoms and the reduction in the consumption of antacids are considered secondary efficacy variable. Short form-36 (SF-36) quality of life questionnaire was evaluated as collateral variable. Data were analyzed as per intention to treat. Results: A significantly decrease in the overall score of the survey was observed with respect to the baseline level (p < 0.001) of 81.4% in the Abexol suspension group and 77.9% in the Abexol tablets group. At the end of the trial, most gastrointestinal-symptoms disappeared or reduced significantly. The frequency of consumption of neutralizing antacids was low. The significantly improvement in the perception of the state of health obtained in the Abexol is in correspondence with the improvement achieved in some of the components evaluate in the SF-36 questionnaire. Both treatments were safe and well tolerated. Conclusions: Abexol suspension showed efficacy and safety similar to Abexol tablets in patients with gastrointestinal symptoms, but using half the dose.

  • The purpose of this study utilizes the service design methodology centered on the lives and experiences of rural residents, who are the main beneficiaries of the service, to derive specific problems and needs, and to propose a service improvement plan suitable for the rural residential environment. The study selected Dosan 2-ri Village, Hongseong-gun, Chungcheongnam-do as the target of the survey, used personas and Customer Journey map of service design method to derive specific core issues and insights from the village residents. By developing this, the final five service directions for 'Air care service', 'Self-driving garbage collection and treatment service', 'Emergency/disaster networking service', 'Contaminant removal service' and 'Mobility share service' were derived and presented according to each key keyword. This study is not just a study to grasp the actual conditions of the rural residential environment, but it focuses on the lives and experiences of rural residents and extracts elements that can respond to changes in the lifestyles and patterns of the residents. It can be used as a basic material for more realistic improvement of rural residential environment and service development research. Most of the existing studies on residential environments and spaces is focused on urban areas, and there is a limit to the use of rural areas in residential areas. Therefore, by making recommendations for improvement of residential environment services suitable for rural areas and by creating residential spaces and environments in rural areas in a comfortable and safe manner, it is thought that it is possible to contribute to improvement of satisfaction in rural areas and improvement of healthy housing welfare as well as to improvement of the quality of life of residents of rural areas.

  • When a human being grew older, followed by visually and perceptually impaired, and dementia, it jeopardizes safety and life unless supportive design is secured for a living environment. This supportive space is based on universal design concept which offers safe-oriented, and simple use by incorporating gender and physical/mental limitation. The study of purppose was to examine the appropriateness of barrier-free standard for seniors' living in apartment through IPA. Chi-square analysis found that satisfaction with BF space is lowered as aging is continued and for female group. Regression analysis indicated that sink was the prime predictor in satisfaction, and stair/elevator was the most important variable. IPA concluded that sink, bath, shower/locker and alert/egress were prime BF indexes to be improved among 14 elements, implying careful design in sanitation area for seniors.

  • Ammunition magazine, which is installed on the ground, has difficulty in protecting from the external attack, and accidental explosion should cause great damage to the life and property. For these reasons, it is needed to develop underground magazine that it has the advantages of safety, security and maintenance. This paper introduce the design case for blasting facilities, which should resist blasting pressure, as well as layout of underground magazine, which takes a safety for explosion and a working space of loading/unloading machine into consideration. On the layout, in case of ${\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}$ underground magazine, put three storage chambers in position almost parallel with principle stress direction, where less effected on discontinuity and hard rock area. Also, secured safe distance according to safety criteria of the Defense Ministry, and verified suitable layout by trace simulation for loading/unloading machine on working stage. Blasting design was performed on evaluation of maximum blast pressure between donar and acceptor chambers, and design condition for blast door, valve, etc. Diminution facilities against explosion, such as thrust block or debris trap, determined its size after plan in accordance with blasting criteria and calculation by structural analysis.

  • Interest in the Quality of working life is spreading rapidly and the phrase has entered the popular vocabulary. That this should be so is probably due in large measure to changes in the values of society, nowadays accelerated as never before by the concerns and demands of younger people. But however topical the concept has become, there is very little agreement on its definition. Rather, the term appears to have become a kind of depository for a variety of sometimes contradictory meanings attributed to it by different groups. A list of all the elements it if held to cover would include availability and security of employment, adaquate income, safe and pleasant physical working conditions, reasonable hours of work, equitable treatment and democracy in the workplace, the possibility of self-development, control over one's work, a sense of pride in craftsmanship or product, wider career choices, and flexibility in matters such as the time of starting work, the number of working days in the week, Job sharing and so on altogether an array that encompasses a variety of traditional aspirations and many new ones reflecting the entry into the post industrial era. The term "quality of working life" was introduced by professor Louis E. Davis and his colleagues in the late 1960s to call attention to the prevailing and needlessly poor quality of life at the workplace. In their usage it referred to the quality of the relationship between the worker and his working environment as a whole, and was intended to emphasize the human dimension so often forgotten among the technical and economic factors in job design. Treating workers as if they were elements or cogs in the production process is not only an affront to the dignity of human life, but is also a serious underestimation of the human capabilities needed to operate more advanced technologies. When tasks demand high levels of vigilence, technical problem-solving skills, self initiated behavior, and social and communication skills. it is imperative that our concepts of man be of requisite complexity. Our aim is not just to protect the worker's life and health but to give them an informal interest in their job and opportunity to express their views and exercise control over everything that affects their working life. Certainly, so far as his work is concerned, a man must feel better protected but he must also have a greater feeling of freedom and responsibility. Something parallel but wholly different if happening in Europe, industrial democracy. What has happened in Europe has been discrete, fixed, finalized, and legalized. Those developing centuries driving toward industrialization like R.O.K, shall have to bear in mind the human complexity in processing and designing the work and its environment. Increasing attention is needed to the contradiction between autocratic rule at the workplace and democratic rights in society.n society.

  • The optimal design of an air curtain nozzle installed at exits, such as fire doors, was determined in order to block the flow of smoke into safe zones. Smoke is the greatest cause of loss of life during the fire. To block the flow of smoke, the airflow must be expelled uniformly without eccentricity from the slits in the air curtain nozzle installed on the upper part of the opening. In order to accomplish this, factors such as air inflow volume, shape of the internal slits, and thickness of the external slits were considered as variables in this study, and a numerical analysis was performed under various conditions. This led to the selection of a final shape which led to the finalization of a design shape. The final shape was manufactured as a prototype and the results were compared and verified with the results of the numerical analysis. The relative error of the numerical analysis results was less than 1%, and the average speed of all the slits was tested, exhibiting a highly consistent tendency.
