Effects of Interactive Pictorial Education on Community Dwelling Older Adult's Self Efficacy and Knowledge for Safe Medication

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of interactive pictorial education on community dwelling older Korean adults' self-efficacy and knowledge for safe medication. Methods: A quasi-experimental, three-group pre- and post-intervention design was used in this study. The interactive pictorial education was designed to suit the learning patterns and psychomotor skills of older adults. The education content, dealing with safe medication, was delivered over three sessions. A total of 136 older adults from local senior centers were assigned to one of the three groups: a) interactive pictorial education plus information booklet (experimental); b) education only with information booklet (conventional); or c) no intervention (control). Results: Participants receiving interactive pictorial education had significantly higher self-efficacy (F=24.32, p<.001) and knowledge (F=24.26, p<.001) scores than the information booklet or control group at post intervention. Post-hoc analyses indicated that both the interactive pictorial and the information booklet groups had significantly higher self-efficacy and knowledge scores than the control group at the post-test point (p<.05). Furthermore, the interactive pictorial group had higher self-efficacy and knowledge scores than the information booklet group at the post-test point (p<.05). Conclusion: These results suggest that the interactive pictorial education is an innovative approach that provides a means for older adults to learn appropriate medication use to improve their own health. It empowers older adults with different literacy levels to enhance their self-efficacy and knowledge for the safe use of medication.

Prevalence in Food Safety Behaviors of Pregnant Women and Their Associated Factors

  • Food handling practices playa key role in the prevalence of food-borne illness. Despite the fact that pregnant women are high risk groups for food-borne disease, little is known about their actual food handling practices at home. The objective of this study was to investigate behaviors regarding food-related hygienic practices of pregnant women. The questionnaire included questions in five major areas : personal hygiene ; adequate cooking ; avoiding cross contamination ; keeping food at safe temperatures ; and avoiding food from unsafe sources. Analysis of 488 questionnaires showed the respondents were unaware of the importance of safe food handling practices. Especially, pregnant women in our study should be encouraged to be careful about either risk of adequate cooking $(2.08\pm0.66)$ and keeping foods at safe temperatures $(2.69\pm0.63)$. Residency and number of children were consistent independent predictors of food handling behaviors. Previous food safety education also was found to have significant effect on food handling practices. TV news and newspapers were considered the most usable sources of food safety information by respondents. The behaviors identified in this study represent ones of particular importance for high-risk populations, like pregnant women. These population characteristics identified in this study could be incorporated in development of food safety educational programs for pregnant women being vulnerable on food-borne illness. Our results could have implications for the design of effective food safety educational efforts. This study indicates the need for continued and improved food safety education and for enforcing systematic food safety education for pregnant women.

유전자재조합식품에 대한 주부의 인식 조사 (Housewife\`s recognition on Genetically modified organism products)

  • This work was conducted to observe the housewives´ recognition about GMO products and their opinions about the development and production of GMO. Seventy eight percent of the subjects in this study were aware of GMO and GMO product which is best known to them was bean. Only 6.2% of the subjects considered GMO as safe and 42.1% did not know whether it is safe or not. Most of the subjects were unlikely to choose to purchase the GMO because of unproved safety, but many subjects were willing to purchase if the safety was informed with high reliability, even though 25.9% of the subjects were still negative. But when GMO product is offered with low price compared with ordinary products, only 24.6% were willing to purchase, showing that the safety was considered more important than the low price.

  • The object of this study is to show the international safety school operating characteristics certified by Community Safety Promotion Cooperation Center affiliated to the WHO to strengthen safety training course and create safe training environment in accordance with the importance of recently the safety education for students and safe environment in the school education course. It draw the kind of education program to prevent accidents in the elementary and middle school students because of analyzing student safety education program. It also suggest operation characteristics which were divided into physical environment and crime prevention environment.

농업생태환경 프로그램의 효과분석 (The Effects of Agricultural Ecological Environment Programs)

  • This study aims to analyze the effects of the Agricultural Ecological Environment Program, the first agri-environmental policy in Korea. To this end, as Janghyeon in Boryeong City and Hwaam in Cheongyang County were set up as experimental group. And similar to these villages nearby, Hwangryong in Boryeong and Gideok in Cheongyang have been set up as the control group. It compared and analyzed the farms' level and structure of awareness. The main results of the study can be summarized as follows. First, the Agricultural Ecological Environment Program improved the awareness of safe agricultural product cultivation and agricultural ecological environment stabilize. However, the contribution to the formation of rural community has not been statistically significant. Second, it was found that the farms clearly distinguish and recognize the safe agricultural products cultivation, the agricultural ecological environment stabilize, and the formation of rural community. On the other hand, it was found that the control group that did not participate in the agricultural ecological and environmental program was confused on the recognition of three things or did not recognize them. To summarized, the future agri-environmental policy can be grafted onto regional development policy. So, the areas of agri-environmental policy should include both agriculture and rural. In addition, the scientific discipline and movement approach should be all used also in the method of approach.

Bacterial Community of Galchi-Baechu Kimchi Based on Culture-Dependent and - Independent Investigation and Selection of Starter Candidates

  • In this study, the bacterial community of galchi-baechu kimchi was determined using culture-based and culture-independent techniques (next generation sequencing:NGS), and showed discrepancies between results. Weissella koreensis and Pediococcus inopinatus were the dominant species according to the NGS results, while Bacillus species and P. inopinatus were dominant in the culture-dependent analysis. To identify safe starter candidates, sixty-five Bacillus strains isolated from galchi-baechu kimchi using culture-dependent methods were evaluated for their antibiotic resistance, presence of toxin genes, and hemolytic activity. Strains were then assessed for salt tolerance and protease and lipase activity. As a result, four strains-B. safensis GN5_10, B. subtilis GN5_19, B. velezensis GN5_25, and B. velezensis GT8-were selected as safe starter candidates for use in fermented foods.

Building safe communities: A dynamic simulation study

  • This paper reports the results of a study designed to understand and facilitate disaster mitigation for communities located in low frequency/high magnitude earthquake zones. The study is based on a small town located near the New Madrid Fault Zone and is therefore at significant earthquake risk. A system dynamics model describes the variables and policies governing the distribution of building safety over time. Data from this town is used to establish a 25-year baseline. Simulations are run to demonstrate the consequences of different building policies.

지역사회 보건 융합에 활용 가능한 노인 운전자용 자가-보고식평가(SAFE-DR)의 타당도 연구 (Validity of the Self-report Assessment Forecasting Elderly Driving Risk (SAFE-DR) Applicable to Community Health Convergence)

  • 본 연구는 노인운전자용 자가 보고식 평가 SAFE-DR 개발 프로젝트의 일환으로 운전위험성 선별을 위한 기준점수를 확인하고 평가의 타당성을 검증하기 위해 수행되었다. Driver 65 Plus평가를 통해 노인운전자 132명을 58명의 위험성 운전자와 74명의 안전성 운전자로 구분하고, 이를 기준으로 SAFE-DR 평가의 위험성 예측 기준을 분석하였다. 또한 SAFE-DR 평가의 구성 타당도, 내용 타당도, 예측 타당도를 검증하였다. SAFE-DR 평가의 운전위험성 예측을 위한 기준점수는 74.5점으로 분석되었으며, 이 기준의 양성 예측도는 88.6%, 음성 예측도는 86.3%로 판별력은 훌륭한(excellent) 수준으로 확인되었다. 또한 집중타당성, 법칙타당성, 내용타당성이 적절한 것으로 판정되었다. 따라서 본 연구를 통해 SAFE-DR은 위험한 노인운전자를 선별하는 용도로 활용할 수 있는 적절한 평가임을 확인하였다.

참먹거리에 대한 지역사회접근 (Community Approach to the True Food)

  • Food is very important for human being. It is not easy for us to enjoy good life because the situation of food is not good in Korea. The self-sufficient food rate is very low and most of food which we take was produced by industrial agriculture. Food of this kind has some problems with respect to the health of consumer, agriculture, environment and community. In order to secure the true food which is safe and environmentally sound, producers, consumers and community have to work together. Producers must engage in environmental agriculture. They must produce the true food and need to know regional consumers. Consumers must pay attention to the regional agriculture and must participate the production of true food. Local government must open farmers' markets for direct marketing between farmers and consumers. NGOs should educate and organize the producers and consumers.

주민주도형 안전 공동체 조성에 있어 서비스디자인의 역할 탐색 (A Study on the Role of Service Design in Creating Resident-driven Safe Community)

  • 본 연구는 다양한 유형으로 발생하는 도시범죄에 있어 차별화된 사고 패러다임과 문제 접근법으로 범죄위험의 새로운 극복모델을 제시한 서비스디자인의 실효성을 탐구한다. 실증사례는 대구시 달서구 두류동의 '서비스디자인을 통한 주민주도형 안전 공동체 조성사업'으로 선제적 주민밀착형 프로세스를 통해 예방 위주의 지역안전시스템을 마련했다고 평가받는다. 이 사업은 지역범죄의 사전예방을 위한 '자연적 감시능력배양 프로그램', 지역안전에 대한 주민의 '사회적 역할 확장 프로그램', 주민안전의 종합적 해결안을 제공하는 '범죄예방 환경디자인 설계' 영역으로 추진되었다. 이 사업에서 서비스디자이너는 주민 주도가 가능한 과업 플랫폼을 설계하고 주민 간 교류의 기회를 확대시켜 지역 환경생태계를 재구성하는 전문가로 활동한다. 이 과정에서 주민들은 지역 연대감을 강화하고 그들 스스로 안전한 삶의 공간을 유지하는 잠재역량을 배양한다. 본 사례분석을 바탕으로 안전 공동체 조성에 있어 서비스디자인의 실효성은 지역주민 간의 관계개선, 범죄예방활동에 있어 주민참여의 활성화, 지역안전에 대한 주민인식환기로 규명한다.
