Background: In veterinary medicine, previous studies regarding the diagnostic performance of shear wave elastography (SWE) in chronic kidney disease (CKD) are not consistent with each other. Moreover, there has been no study evaluating the relationship between symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA) concentration and renal shear wave velocity (SWV) using two-dimensional SWE (2D SWE) in dogs with CKD. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic capability of 2D SWE in dogs with CKD and to assess the relationship between renal SWV and SDMA concentration. Methods: Dogs with healthy kidneys and dogs with CKD underwent 2D SWE and SDMA assay. Renal stiffness was estimated as renal SWV in m/s. Results: SDMA concentration had a weak positive correlation with the left (r = 0.338, p = 0.022) and right renal SWV (r = 0.337, p = 0.044). Renal SWV was not significantly different between healthy kidney and CKD groups in the left (p = 0.085) and right (p = 0.171) kidneys. Conclusions: 2D SWE may could not distinguish between dogs with healthy kidney and dogs with early stage of CKD, but it would be useful for assessing the serial change of renal function in dogs.

Growth characteristics [stem diameter (D), tree height (H)] and wood properties [Pilodyn penetration (P) and stress-wave velocity (SWV)] were measured for 65 families of 6-year-old Acacia mangium trees planted in Indonesia, in order to characterize their variation in D, H, P, and SWV. Therefore, the correlations between the measured characteristics were also determined, and their significant differences observed. Furthermore, their low to moderate values of narrow-sense heritability was obtained, and the results indicated the characteristics to be genetically controlled in A. mangium. In addition, highly significant positive correlations were observed among the growth characteristics, suggesting a close relationship, while there was no significant association between the growth characteristics and P, as well as SWV, indicating their independent. Therefore, these results demonstrate a potential for the improvement of both growth and wood properties of A. mangium trees, using the appropriate breeding programs. In addition, 18 families showed good performance in D and SWV, signifying their positive prospect of being considered as plus trees for the next generation breeding cycles.
Purpsoe: To investigate the diagnostic value of quantitative analysis of a tissue diffusion and virtual touch tissue imaging quantification (VTIQ) technique with acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI) elastography for assessing enlarged cervical lymph nodes. Materials and Methods: Fifty-six enlarged cervical lymph nodes confirmed by pathologic diagnoses were covered in the study. According to the results of pathologic diagnosis, patients were classified into benign and malignant groups. All the patients were examined by both conventional ultrasonography and elastography. AREA% and shear wave velocity (SWV) in ROI of different groups were calculated and compared using ROC curves. Cut-off points of AREA% and SWV were determined with receiver operating characteristic curves. Results: Final histopathological results revealed 21 cases of benign and 35 cases of malignant lymph nodes. The mean values of AREA% and SWV in benign and malignant groups were $45.0{\pm}17.9%$ and $2.32{\pm}0.57m/s$, and $61.3{\pm}21.29%$ and $4.36{\pm}1.25$)m/s, respectively. For the parameters of elastography, "AREA%" and SWV demonstrated significant differences between groups (p=0.002). AREA% was positively correlated with SWV with a correlation coefficient of 0.809 (P<0.001). Conclusions: Stiffness of different lymph node diseases in patients may differ. Elastography can evaluate changes sensitively and provide valuable information to doctors. The study proved that the VTIQ elastography technique can play an important role in differential diagnosis of lymph nodes.
Zelkova serrata is an important hardwood species for the timber industry in Japan. Tree breeding programs for this species have mainly focused on growth characteristics such as stem diameter (D), tree height (TH), stem form, and branching. In order to fulfill timber industry needs, wood quality improvement should be included in the tree breeding program of this species. In the present study, growth characteristics, such as D and TH, and the stress-wave velocity (SWV), which is highly correlated with Young's modulus of wood, were measured for 20-year-old Z. serrata from eight half-sib families planted in a progeny test site with three different initial spacings. Significant differences in all the measured characteristics were found among the eight half-sib families. The variance components of the half-sib families for D, TH, and SWV were 27.2%, 47.3%, and 33.5%, respectively. These results indicate that all the measured characteristics of this species could be improved by tree breeding programs. In addition, only low correlation coefficients were obtained between the growth characteristics and SWV, indicating that extensive selection on SWV in tree breeding programs may not always lead to a reduction in yield volume.
Background: Pancreatitis is a common disease in which 37% of dogs had evidence of acute or chronic pancreatitis at necropsy. Although biopsy is still the gold standard to diagnose acute pancreatitis, clinical data including ultrasonographic findings and measurement of canine serum pancreatic lipase immunoreactivity (cPLI) are used in routine. However, it may be insufficient in the diagnostic approach to acute pancreatitis. Objectives: To evaluate the clinical diagnostic feasibility of two-dimensional shear wave elastography (2D SWE) on canine acute pancreatitis for enhanced diagnostic confidence. Methods: 2D SWE was used to assess pancreatic stiffness and determine the correlation between pancreatic shear wave velocity (SWV) and Spec cPL concentration in 31 dogs with healthy pancreas and 10 dogs with acute pancreatitis. Results: The pancreatic SWV was significantly higher in the acute pancreatitis group (2.67 ± 0.20 m/s) than in the healthy pancreas group (2.30 ± 0.26 m/s; p < 0.05). The moderate positive correlation was found between the pancreatic SWV and Spec cPL concentration (95% confidence interval, 0.214-0.693; r = 0.489; p < 0.05). Conclusions: These results indicated that 2D SWE was feasible for assessing pancreatic stiffness in acute pancreatitis, and that pancreatic SWV using 2D SWE correlated with Spec cPL concentration. SWE could provide a quantitative measure of pancreatic stiffness, which can increase the accuracy of diagnosing acute pancreatitis in dogs. The 2D SWE can be used as a complementary imaging modality for diagnosing acute pancreatitis in dogs.
Square wave voltammetric (SWV) and cyclic voltammetric (CV) behaviors of cefotaxime sodium and ceftriaxone sodium have been investigated in the potential range between -0.10 V and -1.30 V using the phosphate buffers of various pH values ($2.00{\sim}9.10$). Two main peaks observed were irreversible and protons were involved in their electrochemical reductions. The first peaks of these cephalosporin antibiotics are due to the reduction of the azomethine double bond in the methoxyimino group of the side chain at position 7. The second peaks of cefotaxime sodium and ceftriaxone sodium are related to the reductions of the ${\Delta}^3$ double bond and the dioxo moiety of the side chain at position 3, respectively. The calibration curve of cefotaxime sodium in the concentration range between $1.0{\times}10^{-7}M$ and $1.0{\times}10^{-5}M$ yielded the linearity with the correlation coefficient of 0.9998 when the first peak of the antibiotic in a phosphate buffer of pH 3.02 was measured at the conditions of frequency of 120 Hz and pulse height of 50 mV by SWV. The present fast, simple and accurate SWV assay method was applied to determine cefotaxime sodium in the commercial antibiotic powder of injection.
The electrochemical behavior of doxorubicin hydrochloride was investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and square wave voltammetry (SWV). From CV and SWV studies of doxorubicin hydrochloride in the acetate buffers of various pH values, it was found that protons were involved in the reduction of the antibiotic at the $H^+/e^$- ratio at one ( $\DeltaEp/pH =-53 ∼ -61 mV at 23^{\circ}C$), proposing the electrochemical reduction of the quinone moiety in its anthraquinone aglycone. Its electrochemical behavior was pseudo-reversible in the acetate buffer of pH 3.5 by exhibiting the well-defined single cathodic and anodic waves and the ratio of $lp^a/lp^c$ at approximately one over the scan rates of 10∼100 mV/s. Fast and sensitive SWV showing a single peak of doxorubicin has been applied for its quantitative analysis using an acetate buffer of pH 3.5. A linearity was obtained when the peak currents (lp) were plotted against concentrations of doxorubicin in the range of $5.0\times10^{-7} M∼1.0\times10^{-5}$M with a detection limit of $1.0\times10^{-7}$ M.
A screen printed graphite electrode has been developed for a simple and sensitive determination of phenolic compounds in an aqueous solution. The electrode developed uses a simple and effective screen printing technique with ${\alpha}-Cyclodextrin({\alpha}-CD)$ modified graphite ink. Phenols were captured on the surface of the ${\alpha}-CD$ modified electrode through complex formation. The phenol/ ${\alpha}-CD$ complex was deposited and quantified electrochemically using cyclic voltammetry (CV), differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) and square wave voltammetry (SWV). The optimization of the experimental parameters was performed in regard to electrode composition, pH, temperature, sample preconcentration time. Interferences from other organic compounds were investigated. The detection limit for phenols was 500 ${\pm}7$ nM for DPV, with the linear range of 0.5 ${\mu}M$ -25.0 ${\mu}M$ and 30 ${\pm}2$ nM for SWV, with the linear range of 30 nM - $50{\mu}M$, respectively.
Purpose: This study develops heuristic process capability indices (PCIs) using distribution-decomposition methods and evaluates the performances. The heuristic methods decompose the variation of a quality characteristic into upper and lower deviations and adjust the value of the PCIs using decomposed deviations in accordance with the skewness. The weighted variance(WV), new WV(NWV), scaled WV(SWV), and weighted standard deviation(WSD) methods are considered. Methods: The performances of the heuristic PCIs are investigated under the varied situations such as various skewed distributions, sample sizes, and specifications. Results: WV PCI is the best under the normal populations, WSD and SWV PCIs are the best under the low skewed populations, NWV PCI is the best under the moderate and high skewed populations. Conclusion: Comprehensive analysis shows that the NWV method is most adequate for a practical use.
