  • In order to observe the effect of mandibular orthopedic repositioning appliance (MORA) on body strength, the author measured back muscle strength with Digital Back Muscle DYNAMOMETER (TAKEI KIKI KOGYO Co., Tokyo, Japan) before MORA, 15 days after and 30 days after MORA in 12 men and then analysed them statistically. The subjects were weight-lifting athletes of Seoul Athletic High School without dysfunction of masticatory system. MORA was fabricated at 1.0-1.5rnm isotonically closed position (Myocentric Occlusion Position) from mandibular rest position (Myocentric Rest Position) using Myo-monitor (MyoTronics Research Inc., Seattle, Washington, USA) and-SVT C-II (Tokyo Shizaisha Inc., Tokyo, Japan). The results were as follows : 1. The mean of back muscle strength before MORA was 150 kg, that of 15 days after MORA was 165 kg (4.43% increase than before), and that of 30 days was 175 kg (10.76% increase than before). 2. There was a significant difference among back muscle strength before MORA, 15 days after and 30 days after MORA (P<0.01: repeated measures one-way ANOVA). 3. According to the result of determining mandibular position for MORA fabrication, mandibular rest position after relaxation with Myo-monitor was 3.2mm lower, 1.0mm posterior, and 0.5 mm left from centric occlusion. And the mean of the amount of lateral deviation was 0.7 mm.

  • As body sensor network (BSN) research becomes mature, the need for managing power consumption of sensor nodes has become evident since most of the applications are designed for continuous monitoring. Real time Electrocardiograph (ECG) analysis on sensor nodes is proposed as an optimal choice for saving power consumption by reducing data transmission overhead. Smart sensor nodes with the ability to categorize lately detected ECG cycles communicate with base station only when ECG cycles are classified as abnormal. In this paper, ECG classification algorithms are described, which categorize detected ECG cycles as normal or abnormal, or even more specific cardiac diseases. Our Euclidean distance (ED) based classification method is validated to be most power efficient and very accurate in determining normal or abnormal ECG cycles. A close comparison of power efficiency and classification accuracy between our ED classification algorithm and generalized linear model (GLM) based classification algorithm is provided. Through experiments we show that, CPU cycle power consumption of ED based classification algorithm can be reduced by 31.21% and overall power consumption can be reduced by 13.63% at most when compared with GLM based method. The accuracy of detecting NSR, APC, PVC, SVT, VT, and VF using GLM based method range from 55% to 99% meanwhile, we show that the accuracy of detecting normal and abnormal ECG cycles using our ED based method is higher than 86%.

  • Image always carry useful information, detecting a text from scene images is imperative. The proposed work's purpose is to recognize scene text image, example boarding image kept on highways. Scene text detection on highways boarding's plays a vital role in road safety measures. At initial stage applying preprocessing techniques to the image is to sharpen and improve the features exist in the image. Likely, morphological operator were applied on images to remove the close gaps exists between objects. Here we proposed a two phase algorithm for extracting and recognizing text from scene images. In phase I text from scenery image is extracted by applying various image preprocessing techniques like blurring, erosion, tophat followed by applying thresholding, morphological gradient and by fixing kernel sizes, then canny edge detector is applied to detect the text contained in the scene images. In phase II text from scenery image recognized using MSER (Maximally Stable Extremal Region) and OCR; Proposed work aimed to detect the text contained in the scenery images from popular dataset repositories SVT, ICDAR 2003, MSRA-TD 500; these images were captured at various illumination and angles. Proposed algorithm produces higher accuracy in minimal execution time compared with state-of-the-art methodologies.

  • In this paper, we proposed an algorithm for arrhythmia classification, which is associated with the reduction of feature dimensions by linear discriminant analysis (LDA) and a support vector machine (SVM) based classifier. Seventeen original input features were extracted from preprocessed signals by wavelet transform, and attempts were then made to reduce these to 4 features, the linear combination of original features, by LDA. The performance of the SVM classifier with reduced features by LDA showed higher than with that by principal component analysis (PCA) and even with original features. For a cross-validation procedure, this SVM classifier was compared with Multilayer Perceptrons (MLP) and Fuzzy Inference System (FIS) classifiers. When all classifiers used the same reduced features, the overall performance of the SVM classifier was comprehensively superior to all others. Especially, the accuracy of discrimination of normal sinus rhythm (NSR), arterial premature contraction (APC), supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), premature ventricular contraction (PVC), ventricular tachycardia (VT) and ventricular fibrillation (VF) were $99.307\%,\;99.274\%,\;99.854\%,\;98.344\%,\;99.441\%\;and\;99.883\%$, respectively. And, even with smaller learning data, the SVM classifier offered better performance than the MLP classifier.

  • The underwater glider using conception of Lagrangian method, is a new observation platform to understand the properties of the ocean vertically. In 2011 March, KORDI made a first successful autonomous trip from Hupo to west coast of Uleungdo piloting Littoral Glider of Alaska Native Technology LLC. The journey considered many environmental variables and route vigilantly selected, the glider covered 177 km horizontally and took approximately 6 days (153 hours). Despite the existence of 1 kt eddy current, Sound velocity sampling was conducted from 5 meters and reaching maximum of 200 meters depth at each dive. It successfully collected sound velocity and temperature profile at every 5 seconds totaling up to 1408 profiles using SVT&P sensor. During the flight it was also a mission to check the diverse modes of the glider i.e. spiral, waypoints, heading, drift and hover could function without a defect in a given situation. These modes were thoroughly monitored and it could be considered that the glider handled it well during the flight. As a result of this test flight, it was evident that the given underwater glider could operate under 2kt current environment with users defined heading and depth, also with the payload up to 5 kg without changing internal buoyancy.

  • Two main MBE growth techniques have been used: plasma-assisted MBE (PA-MBE), which utilizes a rf plasma to supply active nitrogen, and ammonia MBE, in which nitrogen is supplied by pyrolysis of NH3 on the sample surface during growth. PA-MBE is typically performed under metal-rich growth conditions, which results in the formation of gallium droplets on the sample surface and a narrow range of conditions for optimal growth. In contrast, high-quality GaN films can be grown by ammonia MBE under an excess nitrogen flux, which in principle should result in improved device uniformity due to the elimination of droplets and wider range of stable growth conditions. A drawback of ammonia MBE, on the other hand, is a serious memory effect of NH3 condensed on the cryo-panels and the vicinity of heaters, which ruins the control of critical growth stages, i.e. the native oxide desorption and the surface reconstruction, and the accurate control of V/III ratio, especially in the initial stage of seed layer growth. In this paper, we demonstrate that the reliable and reproducible growth of GaN on Si (110) substrates is successfully achieved by combining two MBE growth technologies using rf plasma and ammonia and setting a proper growth protocol. Samples were grown in a MBE system equipped with both a nitrogen rf plasma source (SVT) and an ammonia source. The ammonia gas purity was >99.9999% and further purified by using a getter filter. The custom-made injector designed to focus the ammonia flux onto the substrate was used for the gas delivery, while aluminum and gallium were provided via conventional effusion cells. The growth sequence to minimize the residual ammonia and subsequent memory effects is the following: (1) Native oxides are desorbed at $750^{\circ}C$ (Fig. (a) for [$1^-10$] and [001] azimuth) (2) 40 nm thick AlN is first grown using nitrogen rf plasma source at $900^{\circ}C$ nder the optimized condition to maintain the layer by layer growth of AlN buffer layer and slightly Al-rich condition. (Fig. (b)) (3) After switching to ammonia source, GaN growth is initiated with different V/III ratio and temperature conditions. A streaky RHEED pattern with an appearance of a weak ($2{\times}2$) reconstruction characteristic of Ga-polarity is observed all along the growth of subsequent GaN layer under optimized conditions. (Fig. (c)) The structural properties as well as dislocation densities as a function of growth conditions have been investigated using symmetrical and asymmetrical x-ray rocking curves. The electrical characteristics as a function of buffer and GaN layer growth conditions as well as the growth sequence will be also discussed. Figure: (a) RHEED pattern after oxide desorption (b) after 40 nm thick AlN growth using nitrogen rf plasma source and (c) after 600 nm thick GaN growth using ammonia source for (upper) [110] and (lower) [001] azimuth.

  • Purpose : We'd like to determine the incidence of congenital heart disease and arrhythmia in elementary school children in Busan, and to provide adequate prevention and treatment. Methods : A total of 23,802(male 12,909, female 10,893) 1st grade elementary school children living in Busan were studied. All children were 7-8 years old. We obtained their medical history by questionnaire and checked elecrocardiography(ECG). Subsequent screening tests including a 2nd ECG, chest X-ray, phonocardiogram and CBC for the students who had abnormal findings at the first screening test. The third screening test was done for students who had cardiac murmurs or abnormal ECG findings in the second screening test by echocardiogram, treadmill test and 24-hour Holter monitoring. Results : Among 23,802 children participants, 605(2.54%) had abnormal ECG findings at the first screening test. Q wave abnormality(0.58%) was observed most frequently, and complete right bundle branch block(RBBB)(0.26%), sinus tachycardia(0.24%), right axis deviation(0.22%) and ventricular premature contraction(VPC)(0.21%) followed in order. Four hundred and twenty four children participated in the second ECG screening test. Two hundred and two children(47.6%) had an abnormality such as sinus tachycardia(18.8%), VPC(17.8%), or complete RBBB(17.3%). After completing the third examination including echocardiogram, we couldn't find the students with ventricular tachycardia (VT) or SVT at the third arrhythmia screening test. Conclusion : A high incidence of arrhythmia was found in the 1st grade elementary school children in Busan despite their healthy appearances, although fatal heart diseases were not noted. Early diagnosis, adequate preventative measures and treatment will prevent and decrease the frequency of emergent situations like syncope and sudden death.
