Effects of Sludge SVI and Chemical Conditioning on Activated Sludge Flotation Thickening (슬러지 SVI와 화학적 개량이 슬러지부상농축에 미치는 영향)

  • Electroflotation (EF) was conducted for activated sludge thickening to investigate the effects of sludge SVI (sludge volume index) and chemical conditioning. Return sludge samples were used for the experiment, which were collected from municipal wastewater treatment plants. The performance of sludge thickening was significantly dependent on sludge SVI. For the sludges with SVI values in a range from 50 to about 150 mL/g, the maximum float content decreased rapidly from 8.4 to 3.5% and flotation compressibility followed the same pattern. In cases of sludges with SVI higher than 150 mL/g, those results showed low content levels without large changes. Gas/solids ratio tended to increase with an increase in SVI. When polyelectrolyte was added into sludges for the conditioning, compressibility increased up to 75% and gas/solids ratio was reduced up to about 35% under the condition of microbubble production rate of 530 mL/h, however, there was no consistent effect of chemical conditioning on the maximum float solids content; some cases were positive but the others negative. It was expected that the optimum dose of electrolyte depends on sludge SVI and an excessive chemical dose causes a performance deterioration of flotation thickening.

Effect of Nutrient Composition and Air Regulation on Bulking in the Activated Sludge Process (활성오니공법에서 영양염류 조성비와 공기조절이 팽화발생에 미치는 영향)

  • The change in filamentous bacteria appearance was observed by adjusting factors such as organic and nurient concentration of feed wastewater and the aeration rate in the reactor. In case that COD:N:P and DO were 100:10:1 and 6.1 m1/1 respectively, the mean SVI was 122 ml/g and the filaments were developed normally in flocs. For the low DO con- dition, however, the SVI averaged 186 ml/g and the appearance of outgrowing filaments were more frequent. When the high organic was supplied into the reactor, the average SVI was 274 ml/g and the distinct filamentous bulking was observed. Meanwhile when COD:N:P was maintained at 100: 1 :0.5, the SVI was as low as 87 ml/g and the appearance of filaments were minimal and the size of flocs was small comparing other experimental conditions. For normal, low aeration and high organic concentration, predominant filaments in the early stage of experiments were commonly Type 021N,S. natans which were usually found in low DO condition. However, Type 041, Type 1851, Type 0961 became predominant as experiments extended. Meanwhile, in low nutrient condition, Type 0675, Type 1851, and Type 0961 were observed. The filamentous bacteria appearance for SVI< 150(ml/g), Type 0041, Type 0961 (usually low organic in feed wastewater) were predominantly observed and SVI > 150(ml/g), S. natans and Type 021N(usually low DO in aeration basin) was predominant.

Effect of Sludge Characteristics on the Sedimentation of Bulking Sludge (팽화 슬러지의 침전에 미치는 슬러지 성상의 영향)

  • This study was carried out to evaluate effect of sludge characteristics (pH, SVI, anaerobic storage, wet density and growth phase) on the sedimentation of bulking sludge of paper manufacturing plant. The results showed that mix hulking sludge with sewage sludge (10-60%) caused the decrease of SVI, the settled sludge concentration was increased. Increase of anaerobic storage time (0 to 8 day) was increased SVI, sedimentation performance was deteriorated. The sedimentation was improved by addition of loess (0.2-5.0 g/L), because wet density of sludge was increased and SVI was decreased. At an exponential phase, the ratio of sedimented/growthed sludge concentration was decreased, the ratio was increased after stationary phase.

New Sludge Settling Characteristic Index Considering Sludge Settling Velocity (슬러지침전속도를 고려한 새로운 슬러지침전특성지표의 설정에 관한 연구)

  • While sludge settles down in a batch column, sludge concentration becomes high. Sludge concentration change is one of the most critical causes of the sludge settling velocity variation. Therefore, sludge concentration change causes sludge index to change. SVI is more sensitive than other sludge indexes to the change of sludge concentration. And if sludge-water interface has reached final height within 30minutes, SVI is not suitable for prediction of sludge settling characteristic, Therefore, SVIs of each sludge are, in some cases, different although each sludge has the same settling velocity. But SVI has been widely used to interpret sludge settling characteristic by a simple testing method. This work has two purposes. The first purpose is to predict sludge settling velocity by using sludge-water interface settling velocity. And the second purpose is to develop new sludge settling characteristic index to exactly interpret sludge settling characteristic by overcoming the limit of SVI.

SPRING DROUGHT MONITORING USING NDVI-BASED VCI AND SVI

  • In this study, the MODIS NDVI for the period of $2000{\sim}2007$ was collected and processed to obtain VCI and SVI which are the quantitative indexes of drought. The VCI and SVI based on NDVI can be used for understanding seasonal pattern of vegetation, drought identification and quantitative analysis of drought. VCI and SVI compared with monthly precipitation ratio to average, Standardized Precipitation Index(SPI), and etc., which are used to identify spring drought, to analyze drought region, similarity and difference in drought severity. In addition, frequency of Spring droughts were calculated for the period of $2000{\sim}2007$, and the usability of the MODIS images as a tool for establishing countermeasures against drought was presented by analyzing drought frequently areas.

Numerical Identification of a Streptomyces Strain Producing a Thermotolerable Restriction endonuclease Svi I (내열성 제한효소인 Svi I을 생성하는 Streptomyces 분리균주의 수리 동정)

  • Numerical identification was carried out for an isolate of Streptomyces D2-5 producing a new restriction endonuclease Svi I. Fifty taxonomic unit characters were tested and the data were analyzed numerically using the TAXON program. The isolate was best matched to Streptomyces violochromogenes in the major cluster 18 of Streptomyces. Therefore, it was concluded that the isolate was identified to be a member of Streptomyces violochromogenes.

Evaluation of bioflocculation and settling characteristics for MLSS from a Biological Nutrient Removal Plant (생물학적 고도처리 MLSS의 생응집성 및 침강성 파악)

  • Evaluating and designing secondary clarifier require to define characteristics of influent MLSS (Mixed Liquor Suspended Solids). In this study, bioflocculation and settling characteristics for MLSS from a Biological Nutrient Removal (BNR) plant located in near Seoul were measured. MLSS concentrations in bioreactor were about 2,500mg/L in summer and about 4,000mg/L in winter, respectively. Tests showed that there was not much bioflocculation occurred in secondary clarifier. Average ESS/DSS (Effluent Suspended Solids/Dispersed Suspended Solids) was 100%. From the settling tests, ZSV (Zone Settling Velocity) and settling constant (n) in Vesilind equation were estimated at different MLSS temperatures. SVI (Sludge Volume Index) and SSVI (Stirred Sludge Volume Index) were also measured at different temperatures. It was found that ZSV was positively correlated with temperature and n was inversely proportional to temperature. SVI and SSVI had very similar values at about $25^{\circ}C$ of MLSS, However, SVI had more than 2 times higher values than SSVI at below $20^{\circ}C$ of MLSS. Temperature effect must be considered to design and evaluate secondary clarifier.

Effect of Sludge Characteristics on the Thickening of Bulking Sludge using DAF (Dissolved Air Flotation) (슬러지의 성상이 DAF(Dissolved Air Flotation)를 이용한 팽화 슬러지 농축에 미치는 영향)

  • Excess sludge treatment and disposal currently represent a rising challenge for domestic or wastewater treatment plants due to economic, environmental and regulation factors. Conventional gravity sedimentation process has been widely used in sludge thickening. The operation method of the process is very simple, but the process requires long detention time for sludge thickening, uses polymers, and shows low sludge thickening efficiency. To solve the problems, we studied on DAF (Dissolved Air Flotation) system. We use bulking sludge of a paper manufacturing plant. The effects of parameters such as SVI (Sludge Volume Index), storage time, initial concentration and wet density of excess sludge were examined. The results showed that the more SVI was low, the more sludge was thickened. As storage time goes by, SVI was increased and thickening performance was deteriorated. In order to improve flotation performance at high concentration, high recycling ratio and pressure did not increase the concentration due to thickening limitation. The addition of 0.8 g/L of loess was increased flotation efficiency of 1.41 times.

Drought Severity Analysis Using VCI and SVI in the Fall of 2008 (VCI와 SVI를 이용한 2008년 가을가뭄 심도분석)

  • 2008년 여름 우리나라는 예년과 달리 홍수기에 북상하는 태풍이나 8월말에서 9월초까지 발생하던 장마전선의 영향을 받지 못했을 뿐만 아니라 홍수기 이후에도 중국에서 다가오는 동서고압대의 지속적인 영향으로 9월 중순 최고기온을 경신하면서, 강수가 없는 건조한 날씨가 계속되었다. 남부지방을 중심으로 8월말 이후 심화된 가뭄은 9월 중순에는 전국적으로 확산되었으며 도서지역의 부분적인 제한급수가 실시되거나 밭 작물 재배에 피해를 초래하기도 하였다. 본 연구에서는 위성영상 기반의 식생지수를 이용하여 2008년 가을가뭄의 시공간적 변화와 행정구역별, 권역별 가뭄 우심지역을 판별하였다. 또한, 가뭄정보를 제공하는 가뭄모니터링 시스템의 가뭄지수와 가뭄의 변화와 심도 등을 비교하였다. 위성영상자료는 MODIS NDVI를 이용하여 제작한 VCI와 SVI를 이용하였으며, 수자원공사의 '가뭄정보시스템'에서 제공하는 주 단위의 가뭄지수와 한국건설기술연구원 '통합수자원평가계획 시스템개발'에서 제공하는 월 단위의 가뭄지수를 활용하였다. 연구결과 행정구역상으로는 전라남 북도와 경상남도 지역이, 권역별로는 섬진 영산강 권역에서 극심한 가뭄이 발생한 것으로 판명되었으며 식생지수 기반의 가뭄발생지역 판별 결과와 기상학적 가뭄지수인 SPI와 PDSI의 가뭄분포가 유사하게 나타났다.

The Effect of Column Height on Sludge-Water Interface Height Change Model (슬러지계면층높이변화모델에서 컬럼높이에 대한 영향)

  • While sludge settles down in a column, sludge settling characteristic is influenced by effect parameters, interparticle force, wall effect etc. As the height of a column changes, the settling velocity of sludge-water interface changes, too. At lower sludge concentration, particular effect was not observed by the difference of column height, however it was observed that settleability of sludge was greatly influenced by column height when sludge settling was poor or sludge concentration was high. It is therefore required to consider the effect of column height when the power model for sludge interface settling is established. In the tests, there was hardly any $SVI_{ts}$(SVI after "t" minutes) difference in each column after 10min at $1.5kg/m^3$ of sludge concentration. When sludge concentration was at $2.5kg/m^3$, $SVI_{ts}$ tended to be constant after 20min. At $3.5kg/m^3$, $SVI_{ts}$ increased to 30minuets. The purpose of this work is to establish the correction factor that is able to compensate the errors derived from each different height of column.
