Objectives: Unprotected leisure time exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun or artificial tanning beds is the most important environmental risk factor for melanoma, a malignant skin cancer with increasing incidences over the past decades. The aim of the present study was to assess the impact of skin health information provided by several sources and different publishing issues on knowledge, risk perception, and sun protective behavior of sunbathers. Methods: A cross-sectional questionnaire survey was conducted among Austrian residents (n=563) spending leisure time outdoors in August 2010. Results: Print media, television, and family were perceived as the most relevant sources of information on skin health, whereas the source physician was only ranked as fourth important source. Compared to other sources, information provided by doctors positively influenced participants' knowledge on skin risk and sun protective behavior resulting in higher scores in the knowledge test (p=0.009), higher risk perception (p<0.001), and more sun protection (p<0.001). Regarding gender differences, internet was more often used by males as health information source, whereas females were more familiar with printed information material in general. Conclusions: The results of this survey put emphasis on the demand for information provided by medical professionals in order to attain effective, long-lasting promotion of photoprotective habits.

The rubradirin biosynthetic gene cluster harbors 58 ORFs within a 105.6-kb sequence, which includes all of the genes responsible for the synthesis of rubradirin, as well as the primary genes relevant to regulatory, resistance, and transport functions. This gene cluster also harbors a resistance-mediating ABC transporter, RubT1, which is located at the most upstream position in the cluster. In the present study, RubT1 was expressed heterologously in E. coli, and the resistance affinity of RubT1 was determined by an antibacterial activity test, as well as by HPLC and ESI-MS analyses. Evidence clearly demonstrates that RubTl mediates rubradirin resistance as an ABC transporter.

Solar retinopathy is a rare but well-recognized clinical entity of macular damage, caused by viewing a solar eclipse or direct sun gazing. A 21-year-old man gazed at the sun for approximately thirty seconds at noon using a monocular telescope with his left eye. Forty-eight hours after sun gazing, the patient experienced symptoms of blurred vision and central scotoma in the left eye. Eight months after sun gazing, the visual acuity decreased from 1.0 to 0.1 in the left eye and the fundus examination showed a round, yellowish-white discoid lesion at the left fovea. Fluorescein angiography showed an early window defect in the fovea of the left eye, that persisted without size change during the late phase resulting from atrophy of the retinal pigment epithelium. A small, central scotoma of the left eye was also found in the visual field test. The visual acuity was unchanged at the end of a one-year follow-up period.

The purpose of this study was to investigate maternal beliefs concerning communication strategies toward children in a variety of situations and to examine related factors. The subjects were 145 mothers of 4-5 year old children. A Communication Strategy Questionnaire composed of 12 vignettes was designed to assess parental beliefs about parent-child interactions. The data were analyzed by F-test and t-test. Findings indicated that mothers preferred rational authoritative communication strategies in conflict situations. Also, mothers communication indicated level of child-centered orientation and goals for child's cognitive development.

In this study, the electric accelerated reinforcing bar corrosion test was carried out to estimate the coefficient of electrolytic corrosion based on the concept of Faraday's law according to rebar corrosion rate and concrete compressive strength which had an effect on the actual corrosion mass loss. The results of this paper allow the prediction of corrosion amount in the electric accelerated reinforcing bar corrosion test method.

UL 1699 규정에서 제시된 다양한 시험방법을 분류하고, 시험방법 중의 하나인 carbonized path arc clearing time test의 시험설비를 구축하였으며, 시험방법 및 절차에 대해 소개하였다. 또한 국내에서 개발되어진 cord 타입 AFCI를 대상으로 시험을 실시하였으며 시험결과 국내에서 개발되어진 cord 타입의 AFCI는 부하전류 3[A]에서도 아크고장을 검출하며 모든 시험전류에서 적합하게 아크를 차단하는 것을 알 수 있었다.

우리나라 전국명지에서 약 1400여점의 토양시료를 채취하여 이 토양 시료에서 방사선균 1635균주를순수분리 배양하고, 명 균주를 배양하여 생산되는 항생물질 중 paper disk method에 의해 벼문고 병균 Pellicularia sasakii에 대한 항균력을 나타내는 균주를 선발하고, 이차선발로서 Dendroid test method와 최종적 선발방법으로 벼를 대상으로 문고병 발생에 대한 green house test에 의하여 우수한 균주를 취득하였다.
