Welding Characteristics of Dissimilar Metal by Continuous Wave Nd:YAG Laser (CW Nd:YAG 레이제에 의한 이종금속 용접특성)

  • Laser welding techniques have been characterised for various materials. In this paper, the laser weldability of STS304 stainless steel and Inconel 600 at dissimilar metal welds using a continuous wave Nd:YAG laser are experimentally investigated. Inconel 600 is being used in a steam generator tubing of pressurized water reactor(PWR) exposed to some corrosion. Stress corrosion cracking can occur on this material. An experimental study was conducted to determine effects of welding parameters, on eliminating or reducing the extent welding zone formation at dissimilar metal welds and to optimize those parameters that have the most influence parameters such as focus length, power, beam speed, shielding gas, and wave length of laser were tested.

  • Anodization of Fe and Fe alloys is one of the most promising techniques to obtain iron oxide films applying to the various electrochemical devices due to their electrochemical catalytic properties. In this study, we investigate on the preparation of anodic iron oxide composite incorporated with WO3 through a single-step anodization of stainless steel type-304 (STS304) as a substrate. The effects of applied voltage and tungsten precursor on the structural characteristics of iron oxide composite with different amount of incorporated WO3 were observed. It is demonstrated that when the voltage of 60 V applied with 20 mM of Na2WO4 as a precursor, anodic iron oxide composite with a large pore diameter and a thick oxide length in which WO3 is uniformly incorporated is obtained.

Development of Chemical Decontamination Process of Stainless Steel for Reactor Coolant Pump (원자로 냉각재 펌프용 스테인리스강에 대한 화학적 제염 공정 개발)

  • As a reactor coolant pump (RCP) is operated in the nuclear power system for a long time, so its surface is continuously contaminated by radioactive scales. In order to maintain for RCP internals, a special chemical decontamination process should be used to reduce the radiation from the RCP surface. In this study, applicable possibility in chemical decontamination for RCP was investigated for the various stainless steels. The stainless steel (STS) 304 showed the best electrochemical properties for corrosion resistance and the lowest weight loss ratio in chemical decontamination process model 3-1 than other materials. However, the pitting corrosion was generated in both STS 415 and STS 431 with the increasing numbers of cycle. The intergranular corrosion in STS 415 was sporadically observed. The sizes of their pitting corrosion were also increased with increasing cycle numbers.

  • Due to commercialization of nuclear power, most countries have taken interest in decontamination process of nuclear power plant and tried to develop a optimum process. Because open literature of the decontamination process are rare, it is hard to obtain skills on decontamination of foreign country and it is necessarily to develop proper chemical decontamination process system in Korea.   • Laser welding of dissimilar metals has been widely used to improve a wear resistance and a corrosion resistance of the industrial parts. The objective of this research is to investigate the influence of the process parameters, such as the welding for SM45C and STS304 with CW Nd:YAG lasers. The bead-on-plate welding tests are carried out for several combinations of the experimental conditions. In order to quantitatively examine the characteristics of the dissimilar welding, the welding quality of the cut section, stress-strain behavior and the hardness of the welded metal are investigated. From the results of the investigation, it has been shown that the optimal voiding condition without defects in the vicinity of the welded area and with a good welding quality is 1600W of the laser power, 0.85m/min of welding speed and $4{\ell}/min$ of pressure for shielding gas.

  • The Nd:YAG laser welding process is one of the most advanced manufacturing technologies owing to its high speed and penetration, and has increased the automation and flexibility of an entire industry. Laser welding of dissimilar metals has been widely used to improve the wear resistance and corrosion resistance of industrial parts. The objective of this research is to investigate the influence of process parameters on the welding of SM45C and STS304 with CW Nd:YAG lasers. Effect of Bonding Temperature and Bonding Pressure on Deformation and Tensile Properties of Diffusion Bonded Joint of STS304 Compact Heat Exchanger (STS304 콤팩트 열교환기 고상확산접합부의 접합부 변형과 인장성질에 미치는 접합온도 및 접합압력의 영향)

  • In this study, the effect of bonding temperature and bonding pressure on deformation and tensile properties of diffusion bonded joint of STS304 compact heat exchanger was investigated. The diffusion bonds were prepared at 700, 800 and $900^{\circ}C$ for 30, 60 and 90 min in pressure of 3, 5, and 7 MPa under high vacuum condition. The height deformation of joint decreased and the width deformation of joint increased with increasing bonding pressure at $900^{\circ}C$. The ratio of non-bonded layer and void observed in the joint decreased with increasing bonding temperature and bonding pressure. Three types of the fracture surface were observed after tensile test. The non-bonded layer was observed in diffusion bonded joint preformed at $700^{\circ}C$, the non-bonded layer and void were observed at $800^{\circ}C$. On the other hand, the ductile fracture occurred in diffusion bonded joint preformed at $900^{\circ}C$. Tensile load of joint bonded at $800^{\circ}C$ was proportional to length of bonded layer and tensile load of joint bonded at $900^{\circ}C$ was proportional to minimum width of pattern. The tensile strength of joint was same as base metal.

Evaluation on erosion resistance of STS304 by flyash (Flyash에 의한 STS304 재료의 내침식성 평가)

  • Erosion due to abrasive particles contained in gas streams from boilers has been emerged as a significant problem in the coal fired power plants. Particle erosion accounted for approximately 50% of boiler failures and especially flyash erosion was responsible for 20~30% of emergency boiler shutdowns. Particularly, because of the high ash loading and high velocity, most erosion occurs in the boiler tubes and economiser tube bank where the direction of the gas stream changes to $180^{\circ}$ .In this study, a high temperature particle erosion tester was used to evaluate erosion rate in a simulated environment. The erosion parameters such as erosion temperature, particle impact angle, particle velocity and various particle size were changed. Flyash is the combustion product of the pulverized coal, where size is ranging from 1 to $200\mu\textrm{m}$. Flyash composed of mainly SiO$_2$, $A1_2$$_O3$, and $Fe_2$$O_3$has dense spherical particles and irregular particles containing numerous pores and cavities. From the erosion tests at various conditions, the maximum erosion was experienced at impact angles of $30^{\circ}$ to $60^{\circ}$ In addition, erosion rate increased in proportional to velocity and temperature. And from the observation of the eroded surfaces, it was also concluded that 304 stainless steel was mainly eroded by extrusion-forging at high impact angle ($90^{\circ}$) and by microcutting mechanism at low impact angles ($30^{\circ}$ and $45^{\circ}$).

Quasi-Static and Dynamic Deformation Behavior of STS304- and Ta-fiber-reinforced Zr-based Amorphous Matrix Composites Fabricated by Liquid Pressing Process (액상가압공정으로 제조된 STS304와 Ta 섬유 강화 Zr계 비정질 복합재료의 준정적 및 동적 변형거동)

  • Zr-based amorphous alloy matrix composites reinforced with stainless steel (STS) and tantalum continuous fibers were fabricated without pores or defects by a liquid pressing process, and their quasi-static and dynamic deformation behaviors were investigated by using a universal testing machine and a Split Hopkinson pressure bar, respectively. The quasi-static compressive test results indicated that the fiberreinforced composites showed amaximum strength of about 1050~1300 MPa, and its strength maintained over 700 MPa until reaching astrain of 40%. Under dynamic loading, the maximum stresses of the composites were considerably higher than those under quasi-static loading because of the strain-rate hardening effect, whereas the fracture strains were considerably lower than those under quasi-static loading because of the decreased resistance to fracture. The STS-fiber-reinforced composite showed a greater compressive strength and ductility under dynamic loading than the tantalum-fiber-reinforced composite because of the excellent resistance to fracture of STS fibers.
