A Study on the High Temperature Gas Nitriding Heat Treatment of STS 347 and STS 310S Austenitic Stainless Steel (STS 347 및 STS 310S 오스테나이트계 스테인리스강의 고온 가스질화 열처리 특성 연구)

  • The influence of high temperature gas nitriding (HTGN) in STS347 and STS310S steels was experimentally investigated. The HTGN was carried out at $1,050^{\circ}C{\sim}1,150^{\circ}C$ for 10 hrs in a gaseous atmosphere containing $1kg/mm^2$ of nitrogen. After HTGN, fine precipitates of $Cr_2N$ and NbN appeared in austenite on the surface of STS 347, while nitrogen pearlite, which was layeredof $Cr_2N$ and austenite alternatively, appeared in austenite on the surface of STS 310S. The surface hardness of HTGN-treated, STS 347 and STS 310S specimens was 250~360 Hv and 270~400 Hv, respectively, depending on the temperature of HTGN. The nitrogen content was analyzed 1.4 wt% and 1.6 wt% at the surface layer of STS 347 and STS 310S steels, respectively. In addition, an improvement in the corrosion resistance of HTGN treated specimens was observed.

Mechanical properties and immersion characteristics of sensitinized STS310S, STS316L and STS347H in the range of 480~720℃ (480~720℃에서 예민화한 STS310S, STS316L 및 STS347H의 기계적 성질 및 침지 특성)

  • The current study was carried to understand the immersion characteristics and mechanical properties of heat treated stainless steels. Stainless steels (STS310S, STS316L and STS347H) were thermally treated at temperature ranges from 480 to $720^{\circ}C$. Nominal stress was determined to be slightly different depending on the heat treatment temperature. The Cr concentration in STS310S was increased at the temperatures of 600 and $660^{\circ}C$, whereas the Cr concentration in STS316L and STS347H were almost constant regardless of heat treatment temperatures. Vickers hardness was found larger as a thermal treatment temperature was increased. Immersion tests of the stainless steels were also carried out in acidic solution and alkaline solution for 240 hours. Among three different stainless steels, the pitting was detected in the acidic solution, not in the alkaline solution. The pitting of STS347H was occurred more than STS310S and STS316L.

  • Austenitic stainless steels generally experience the occurrence of chromium-depleted zones at the boundaries, known as sensitization, caused by the carbide precipitation that takes place due to a welding process or heat treatment. Normally, the depleted zones become the focus of the intense corrosion. In this study, the Cr-free organic/inorganic hybrid solution was developed, and the artificially degraded STS316S and STS347H with the solution-coating investigated the corrosion resistance by salt spray test. Both the OIBD-1 and OIBD-2 solutions improved the corrosion resistance of STS310S and STS347H. The corrosion resistance with the OIBD-1 solution was better than that of OIBD-2 solution. Additionally, Both solutions have been proven excellence in adhesion ability, boiling water resistance and flexibility. However, a problem of rubbing after the boiling was found out to be overcome.

A study on Weibull Probability Statistics Characteristics for Vickers Hardness of Degraded Stainless Steel (열화된 스테인리스강의 비커스 경도에 대한 와이블 확률 통계 특성에 관한 연구)

  • Vickers hardness is an important material in the design and reliability is required. Therefore, these values are very important as the basic data for design, manufacture and development, and the identification of quantitative probability distribution characteristics such as mean and dispersion is a very important parameter in design. In this study, Vickers hardness was measured after artificially heat-treated in the temperature range 753K, where chrome depletion near the grain boundary occurred for three kinds of stainless steels, and the Vickers hardness were evaluated. From the results, Vickers hardness increased with increasing heat treatment temperature. In Weibull distribution for Vickers hardness, the dispersion of STS310S at 813K and 873K was small, and the dispersion of STS316L at 753K, 933K and 993K was small. Also, STS347H exhibited the lowest dispersion at 753K in three kinds of stainless steels. The scale parameter increased with increasing heat treatment temperature in three kinds of stainless steels.

High Temperature Fatigue Life Prediction for Welded Joints of Recuperator Material for UAV (무인기용 레큐퍼레이터 소재의 용접부에 대한 고온 피로수명 예측)

  • An experimental study on the welding part of a heat transfer plate that constitutes the lightweight and high efficiency recuperator is presented in this paper. In particular, to find out the service life of the welded part, fatigue characteristics were determined through experiments. Experiments were carried out on two materials (STS347, AL20-25 + nb), which are selected as the material of the recuperator; further, the specimens were manufactured through the methods used for actual fabrication and the standards recommended by ASTM. To evaluate the mechanical properties of the specimens at room and high temperature, MTS-810 was used in a high-temperature furnace. The tensile test was carried out at room and high temperatures for each specimen. The fatigue test was carried out by setting the load ratio corresponding to 50%, 40%, 30%, 20%, and 10% of the tensile strength at the stress ratio of 0.1. Finally, the fatigue life characteristics obtained by the experiment were compared with the stresses owing to the load generated in the operating conditions of the recuperator, and the lifetime of the welds was evaluated to prepare for the operation time required by the UAV.
