Science Teachers' Perception on Major Features of the 2007 Revised Science Curriculum for Class Implementation (2007년 개정 과학과 교육과정의 주요 내용의 실행에 관한 과학 교사의 인식)

  • This study aimed to investigate how science teachers perceived major features of the 2007 revised science curriculum and implementing them in classes. The 2007 revised science curriculum included critical features such as creativity, open inquiry, science writing, discussion and STS. In terms of necessity, clarity and complexity of those features for curriculum implementation, teacher perceptions were examined. Particularly with regard to open inquiry assigned 6 class periods per semester as one of the critical features of 2007 revised science curriculum, we asked teachers how they would prepare and implement the technique in their teaching. In results of this study, science teachers agreed on the necessity and importance of those major features of the 2007 revised science curriculum, including creativity, open inquiry, science writing, discussion, and STS. However, they were not clear on how those would work in their classrooms and expected various impediments. Open inquiry was specifically perceived as most negative in its implementation with the mention of various complex reasons. Based on findings in this study, we proposed the 'Dual Action Research Model' for curriculum implementation. It tries to explain how curriculum is implemented in classrooms and diminish the gaps between curriculum developers and teacher users by means of leading teachers to understand the curriculum meaningfully and implement their teaching based on this understanding.

A Study on the Design of Training Contents for LNG Bunkering Workers (LNG 벙커링 종사자 교육 콘텐츠 설계에 관한 연구)

  • The number of ships using liquefied natural gas (LNG) as fuel is increasing to respond to the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) air pollutant emission regulations. At the same time, the need to expand LNG bunkering infrastructure for stable fuel supply and demand for ships is emerging. LNG bunkering is carried out in three ways: truck to ship (TTS), pipe to ship (PTS), and ship to ship (STS). In foreign countries, all three methods are being carried out, but in Korea, LNG bunkering is carried out only with the TTS method owing to the lack of infrastructure. LNG bunkering is a high-risk operation. For safe bunkering operations, the competence of the workers is extremely important, and a professional training course is required to strengthen the competence. This study was conducted to design training contents for LNG bunkering workers for fostering LNG bunkering experts and performing safe and systematic bunkering work. To this end, the current status of LNG-fueled ships and bunkering was identified, and related domestic and abroad educational contents were analyzed. In addition, opinions on the importance of educational contents were collected through expert questionnaires. Consequently, we designed training contents suitable for various training targets and divided them into basic and advanced training courses, with a duration of 4 days, and proposed. Based on the designed training contents, if additional research is conducted by sufficiently reflecting Korea's bunkering environment, it will be of great help to improve the competence of LNG bunkering workers and to foster human resources.

Analysis of Scientific Literacy on Korean Science Curriculum of Earth Science Contents (교육과정 변천에 따른 지구과학 영역의 과학적 소양 분석)

  • This study is conducted to search about changing earth science contents influenced by the scientific literacy from the 7th curriculum to the 2015 revised curriculum. Earth science area is divided into astronomy, geology, meteorology and oceanography contents. Among the elements of scientific literacy, the contents were analyzed focusing on STS elements. In the astronomical and meteorological content areas, there were aspects of scientific literacy in all periods from the 7th to the 2015 revised curriculum. Except for the 2007 revised curriculum in the geological area and the 7th curriculum in the oceanographic content area, the aspects of scientific literacy appeared at all times. It is emphasized the usefulness of science and technology in the astronomical content area and the use of science in everyday life in geological and meteorological content area. In the oceanographic content area, it is emphasized that content of science related social issue such as resource shortage and environmental pollution. This study can be extended to the fields of physics, chemistry and life science, we suggest to inquire the scientific literacy as a integrated science.

Development of the Web-based Distant Learning Model for Enhancing Process Skills in Elementary Science (초등학교 과학과에서 탐구사고력 지도를 위한 원격교육 모형 개발)

  • The students can search and solve the problems for themselves, improve the scientific inquiry skill through the distance learning in the WWW. It also enable them to construct the wide recognition of the STS which is emphasized in the 7th national curriculum. In addition, due to the one-to-one contact in the distance learning the diverse differentiated education can be run. In this paper, we develop the web-based distant learning model which is suitable in the elementary science and emboss those merits of the distance learning.

Presenting Characteristics of Mokpo Natural History Museum and Comparative Analyses to them with Middle School Science Curricula (목포 자연사 박물관의 전시특성 및 중학교 과학교육과정과의 비교 분석)

  • For teaching-learning to geological region of earth science part in science education, middle school, the practical uses of natural science museum are very effective. So, the appropriate uses of the natural science museum are necessary for the teaching and learning of Science Education. This study aims to consider the presentation characteristics of the natural science museum and to examine how is effective it to geological region in middle school science curricula on those uses. From the results, the natural science museum is low in multi-sided and open-endedness presentation characteristics but high in ones of accessible characteristic. And its presentations are good in multimodal characteristics using supported materials but relatively low in relevant and multimedia ones. In the museum, diorama and self-performing presentation types are not but internet ones are most. The presentations of the natural science museum are mainly assigned to knowledge region linked to basic science concepts but relatively insufficient in STS aspects, on the basis of connection the presentations with middle school science curricula. It is respected that these insufficiencies might be diminished by variable arrangements of and explanations to the presentations for understanding improvements. And, applies to the presentations in STS may be encountered, if multi-sided observations to them is available.

A Study on Science Teachers' Perceptions of the 6th High School Science Curriculum and Their Practices (제6차 고등학교 과학 교육과정과 실천에 대한 과학 교사의 인식 조사)

  • We examined how science teachers in academic high schools perceived the 6th science curriculum and how they practiced under the curriculum. A nationwide survey was administered to obtain the responses from 402 teachers of 135 high schools. Most thought that the main themes of curriculum revision were well-embedded in the 'objectives', and that the 'content and content structure' were proper. However, they thought that the 'objectives' were not stated explicitly enough to develop teaching materials and to improve actual teaching and evaluation, and that some statements in the sections of 'method' and 'evaluation' were not proper if considered actual teachers' ability to teach inquiry and educational facilities. Many teachers also felt that the information about the curriculum was not sufficiently included at in-service teacher training programs, and that students' knowledge, attitude, and problem solving ability were not enhanced. Only few teachers were found to apply the STS approaches, reconstruct lessons, vary the structure of learning group, and develop evaluation tools with their colleagues. The lack of the practices was explained by entrance-examination-centered instruction and assessment, poor educational facilities, and lack of innovative teaching materials.

Secondary Beginning Teachers' Views of Scientific Inquiry: With the View of Hands-on, Minds-on, and Hearts-on (과학탐구에 대한 중등 초임교사의 인식: Hands-on, Minds-on, Hearts-on의 관점으로)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate beginning teachers' views of scientific inquiry envisioned in science education reform, which is the main goal of science education at schools. Teachers' views about scientific inquiry influence their students' learning in the classroom, so it is significant to investigate teachers' views about the scientific inquiry. 126 beginning science teachers participated in this study. The survey asking teachers' view of general scientific inquiry, nature of science (NOS) and the relationship of science, technology, and society (STS), was developed and implemented for 30 minutes. Alternative views of scientific inquiry including NOS and STS were emerged through data analysis with open coding system. The reliability and validity of data collection and data analysis were constructed through the discussion with experts in science education. The results of this study were as follows. Participants defined scientific inquiry as opportunities of 'Hands-On' and 'Minds-On' or its combination rather than 'Hearts-On'. However, teachers demonstrated the view of 'Hands-On' for the purpose of scientific inquiry and for teachers' roles in its implementation. The view of 'Hearts-On' about scientific inquiry was not identified. The naive view of NOS were identified more than informative one. More positive attitude about the relationship of STS was released. The implication was made in teacher education, especially structured induction program for beginning teachers.

A Study on the Effect of the Project of Examining the Chemist Contributing to the Quality of Human Life (인간의 삶의 질 증진에 공헌한 화학자 조사하기 프로젝트 수업의 효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the change of chemistry-related attitude of preliminary teachers, after the project of examining chemists contributing to the quality of human life. One group pretest-posttest was used in this study as an experimental design. Before examining the chemist, few preliminary teachers have the knowledge about the chemist contributing to the quality of human life. After the project of examining the chemist, the affirmative awareness on the chemist on preliminary teachers is increased. This result shows that the project of examining the chemist contributing to quality of life can give to make the positive attitude of preliminary teachers on chemistry, and to apply the useful tool related to STS curriculum which is not described effectively in science or chemistry textbook.

A Comparative Study of the Trends of Current Science Education and the System Thinking Paradigm (현대 과학교육의 동향과 시스템사고 패러다임의 비교 연구)

  • The purposes of this study are to understand the trends of current science education compared with thinking paradigm and to find the direction of reform in holistic view. It is divided into three parts. Firstly, significant trends of science education during the late 20th century were examined. Secondly, the current society was discussed, particularly focused on the thinking paradigm. Thirdly, the science education trends and thinking paradigms were compared. The results are 1) A major goal of contemporary science education is the scientific literacy, for which the constructivist and STS class are introduced, 2) Thinking paradigm is changing from analytics to systemics, and 3) Compared the current science education and system thinking paradigm, they seem consistent in respect of looking for the whole-part relationship.

Review and Analysis of the Studies on Contexts in Science Education (과학교육에서의 상황 관련 연구에 대한 개관과 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to review the studies related to the problem of context in science education. Firstly, studies on context and context effects in science education (and also those related in cognitive psychology) were summarized according to the topics concerning science learning, such as deductive reasoning and probabilistic judgement, controlling variables, scientific inquiry skills, memory and consistency of misconceptions, selecting cognitive strategies and problem solving, achievement and momentum effect, and interest, religion and culture. Secondly, the common problems appeared from the analysis of the studies were discussed, such as (1) how to define contexts?, (2) how to classify contexts?, (3) how to characterize the effects of contexts? and (4) how to explain the context effects? Finally, the implications of the analysis of the studies on the problem of context were discussed in terms of recent development of science education, such as misconception studies, STS science education and the application of the history of science to science teaching.
