  • MIKE21, a commercial hydrodynamic model, was applied at the Masan Bay to evaluate the model's applicability of simulating the inundation phenomena. A storm surge/inundation model which adopts overflow computation scheme was applied together for comparison. The results of both models show correspondence with not only observed inundation area but also inundation water depth to prove their ability as inundation models. Especially, the accuracy of the MIKE21 model, which just adopts wetting/drying scheme, does not seem to be behind the inundation model. Moreover, an inundation simulation of the virtual MAEMI which was generated at preceding study, was conducted. The inundation area of the virtual MAEMI is similar to that of the real MAEMI, but inundation water depth is deeper than the real MAEMI.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore the effectiveness of dual-polarization radar rainfall by comapring with the flood inundation record map through KIMSTORM(Grid-based KIneMatic wave STOrm Runoff Model). For Namgang dam ($2,293km^2$) watershed, the Bisl dual-polarization radar data for 3 typhoons (Khanun, Bolaven, Sanba) and 1 heavy rain event in 2012 were prepared. For both 28 ground rainfall data and radar rainfall data, the model was calibrated using observed discharge data at 5 stations with $R^2$, Nash and Sutcliffe Model Efficiency (ME) and Volume Conservation Index (VCI). The calibration results of $R^2$, ME and VCI were 0.85, 0.78 and 1.09 for ground rainfall and 0.85, 0.79, and 1.04 for radar rainfall respectively. The flood inundation record areas (SY and MD/SG district) by typhoon Sanba were compared with the distributed modeling results. The spatial distribution by radar rainfall produced more surface runoff from the watershed and simulated higher stream discharge than the ground rainfall condition in both SY and MD/SG district. In case of MD/SG district, the stream water level by radar rainfall near the flood inundation area showed 0.72 m higher than the water level by ground rainfall.

  • In this study, the optimum design technology is suggested by using reliability analysis method. Nowadays, urban flood inundation is easily occurred because of local heavy rain. Traditional deterministic design method for storm sewer may underestimate the size of pipe. Therefore, stochastic method for the storm sewer design is necessary to solve this problem. In the present study, reliability model using FORM (First Order Reliability Method) was developed for the storm sewer. Developed model was applied to the real storm sewers of 5 different areas. Probability of exceeding capacity has been calculated and construction costs according to diameter have been compared. Probability of exceeding capacity of storm sewers of 5 areas have been calculated after estimating the return period of rainfall intensity.

  • After Disaster Impact Assessment(DIA) Program was particed, the wide variety of hydrological data are estimated by introducing the concept of critical storm duration to calculate the stormwater impoundments as the alternative of increasing runoff due to many developments. Critical storm duration is varied by a lot of hydraulic structures, drainage characteristics, temporal distribution of design rainfall, return period, and runoff models. In this study the methods of estimating the proper volume to design the stormwater impoundments are proposed to determine the required volume by comparing and analyzing the maximum stormwater impoundments in accordance with the impoundment volume and rainfall duration by using the concept of storage ratio presented in the existing studies. The methods of determining the critical storm duration of design rainfall which cause the maximum load from the runoff hydrograph will be studied as analyzing rainfall-runoff using the various runoff models and observed data.

  • This research is to show the application of runoff model and runoff analysis of urban storm drainage network. the runoff models that were used for this research were RRL, ILLUDAS, and SWMM applicative object basin were Geucknak-chun and Sangmu drainage basin located in Seo-Gu, Kwangju. The runoff analysis employed the design storm that distributed the rainfall intensity according to the return period after the huff's method. The result from the comparative analysis of the three runoff models was as follows The difference of peak runoff by return period was 20-30% at Sangmu drainage area of $3.17 Km^2$, while less than 10% at Geucknak-chun drainage area of $12.7 Km^2$. The peak runoff were similar to all models. At the runoff hydrograph the times between rising and descending points were in the sequence of RRL, ILLUDAS and SWMM, but the peak times were similar to all models. The conveyance coefficient to examine the conveyance of the existing drainage network was 0.94-1.37, which means insecure, in Geucknak-chun drainage basin and 0.69-1.16, which means secure, in sangmu drainage basin.

  • An integrated system of GIS and water quality model was suggested including the pollutant loads from the watershed. The developed system consists of two parts. First part is the GIS module. The geographic information system of the study area was built to provide the information on landuse and several surface factors concerning the overland flow processes of water and pollutants. Second part is the modeling modules which include storm event pollutant load model(SEPLM)., non-storm event pollutant load model(NSPLM), and river water quality simulation model(RWQSM). Models can calculate the pollutant load from the study area. The databases and models are linked through the interface modules resided in the overall system, which incorporate the graphical display modules and the operating scheme for the optimal use of the system. The developed system was applied to the Chungju multi-purpose reservoir to estimate the pollutant load during the four selected rainfall events between 1991 and 1993,. based upon monthly basis and seasonal basis in drought flow, low flow, normal flow and wet flow.

  • The series of the papers consist of three parts to describe the development, calibration, and applications of the flood forecasting models for the Youngsan Estuarine Dam located at the mouth of the Youngsan river. And this paper discusses the hydrologic model for inflow simulation at Naju station, which constitutes 64 percent of the drainage basin of 3521 .6km$^2$ in area. A simplified TANK model was formulated to simulate hourly runoff from rainfall And the model parameters were optirnized using historical storm data, and validated with the records. The results of this paper were summarized as follows. 1. The simplified TANK model was formulated to conceptualize the hourly rainfall-run-off relationships at a watershed with four tanks in series having five runoff outlets. The runoff from each outlet was assumed to be proportional to the storage exceeding a threshold value. And each tank was linked with a drainage hole from the upper one. 2. Fifteen storm events from four year records from 1984 to 1987 were selected for this study. They varied from 81 to 289rn'm The watershed averaged, hourly rainfall data were determined from those at fifteen raingaging stations using a Thiessen method. Some missing and unrealistic records at a few stations were estimated or replaced with the values determined using a reciprocal distance square method from abjacent ones. 3. An univariate scheme was adopted to calibrate the model parameters using historical records. Some of the calibrated parameters were statistically related to antecedent precipitation. And the model simulated the streamflow close to the observed, with the mean coefficient of determination of 0.94 for all storm events. 4. The simulated streamflow were in good agreement with the historical records for ungaged condition simulation runs. The mean coefficient of determination for the runs was 0.93, nearly the same as calibration runs. This may indicates that the model performs very well in flood forecasting situations for the watershed.

  • Concern about nonpoint source pollution associated with urban storm water has led to the development of new tools for better water quality planning. This paper presents an application of a geographic information system (GIS) for urban water quality study. The GIS was used to manage land use data for nonpoint source pollution modeling and to aggregate pollutant loadings within various types of geographic units. An empirical water quality model was used to estimate pollutant loadings based primarily on land use. A land use coverage was created by updating an old coverage through interpretation of recent photography. This land use coverage was also used to record all pollutant loadings for each land use polygon. Storm sewer maps were digitized and interpreted to create a coverage of storm sewer basins and sub-basins. By overlaying pollutant loadings with the sewer sub-basin layer, aggregated pollutant loadings for major sewer outfalls were calculated. Based on the loading information, critical areas of excessive pollutant loadings were located and the effectiveness of Best Management Practices (BMPs) to control pollutant loadings were evaluated.

  • Urban flooding is usually caused by the surcharge of storm sewers. For this reason, previous studies on urban flooding are mainly concentrated on the simulation of urban drainage systems. However these approaches that find the pipes which have insufficient drainage capacity are very approximate and unreasonable ways in establishing both flood prevention and flood-loss reduction planning. In this study, a two-dimensional model linked the existing ILLUDAS model is developed to calculate the accurate and resonable solution about urban flood inundation and it is verified by using the simulation of July 2001 flood in Seoul. In the urban area with a small difference of ground elevations, the two-dimensional flood propagation phases must be considered to make a accurate analysis for inundated area and depth. The result of this study can be used to construct fundamental data for a flood control plan and establish a urban flood forecasting/warning system.
