The Effects of Mathematics-Centered STEAM Program on Middle School Students' Interest in STEM Career and Integrated Problem Solving Ability (수학교과 중심의 STEAM 수업이 중학생들의 STEM 분야 진로 흥미도 및 융합적 문제해결력에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of mathematics-centered STEAM program which was operated in free semester system classes on middle school students' interest in science, technology/engineering, and mathematics(STEM) career and integrated problem solving ability. The study was conducted with 40 first graders in a middle school for 12 weeks using mathematics-centered STEAM program developed for the use of free semester system classes by the support of the Ministry of Education/KOFAC in 2016. According to the results of STEM career interest survey, mathematics-centered STEAM program was effective for improving middle school students' interest in STEM career. And it was also effective in the development of students' integrated problem solving ability.

Co-author network for convergent research pattern analysis in stem cell sector (줄기세포분야 융합연구형태 분석을 위한 공저자 네트워크)

  • This study was carried out to confirm a convergent research pattern and researchers' role in stem cell sector by social network analysis. Articles were extracted from 1996 to 2012 in PubMed, 515 authors of 270 embryonic stem cell and induced pluripotent stem cell articles and 1,515 authors of 580 adult stem cell and mesenchymal stem cell articles. Degree(D) and betweenness(B) centrality was measured and co-author network was generated for researcher's role. As a result, Core researcher and Intermediary researcher was identified in co-author network. Core researcher had high D. centrality, otherwise high B. centrality or not. Intermediary researcher for convergent research had high B. centrality and low D. centrality. Conclusively, co-author network will be used as objective data not only to find core researchers in subject area for improving achievement but also to select experts for research project evaluation.

  • The idea of multiple-use of forest land is tile one field of economics to improve the efficiency of forest land, and is the famous management technique widely used in the developed forestry country. This paper introduces the STEM and the constraint method, which is one kind of mathematical programming techniques used for multiple forest Land use, and discusses the differences between these two methods by using the hypothetical data.

Engineering Design: A Facilitator for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics [STEM] Education (공학적 디자인: 과학, 기술, 공학, 수학교육의 촉진자)

  • This study aims to investigate the key common topics identified and discussed in relevant literature associated with the integrative efforts among STEM disciplines. The key methodology and pedagogy were examined and the significant benefits of using the design method for STEM education were discussed. Meta-analysis was employed and qualitative approach was mainly used to synthesize the major findings and conclusions of the 33 empirical studies. The findings of this meta-analysis revealed that the types and names describing the design methods used the various terms, but the key features have reflected the similar pedagogical benefits and key characteristics. The engineering design is an effective strategic methodology and pedagogy for STEM education. In addition, the design methods show the key benefits including (1) to improve academic achievement, (2) to promote students' affective gains, (3) to facilitate collaborative learning, and (4) to explore STEM related careers and jobs. The collaborative works among STEM professions are needed to promote the benefits of using design methods for integrating STEM subjects.

Evaluation of Scholarly Information System in STEM (STEM 학술정보시스템 평가)

  • The fields of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Medicine) are changing rapidly. Recently, with the remarkable development of Internet and Web technologies, an environment that can be accessed worldwide has been created, thereby lowering the barriers to share STEM knowledge and information. The purpose of this study is to derive improvements by evaluating users' satisfaction with the information system developed by applying the open access model in the STEM field. Through an online survey using a structured questionnaire, a total of 204 users participated from January to February. The collected data were analyzed using quantitative statistical techniques. IPA (Importance Performance Analysis) technique was used. By identifying the importance and satisfaction (performance) between variables, areas with relatively low satisfaction compared to importance were derived. Users' overall satisfaction with the open access information system was 81.2 points and social reliability was 85.9 points, which were relatively high, respectively. What should be paid attention to in this study is the satisfaction with the system use environment, which is the most vulnerable area.

Identifying Key Competencies Required for STEM Occupations (과학, 기술, 공학, 수학(STEM) 직종에 요구되는 핵심 역량 분석)

  • In modern society, as technology develops and industry diversifies, students can choose from a variety of career paths. Since science, technology, engineering, and mathematics require a longer education and experience than other fields, it is important to design science education policies based on the competencies required for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) occupations. This study explores the definition of science and technology manpower and STEM occupations and identifies core competencies of STEM occupations using standard job information operated and maintained by the US Department of Labor ($O^*NET$). We specially analyzed ratings of the importance of skills (35 ratings), knowledge (33 ratings), and work activities (41 ratings) conducting descriptive analysis and principal component analysis (PCA). As a result, core competencies of STEM occupations consist of STEM problem-solving competency, Management competency, Technical competency, Social service competency, Teaching competency, Design competency, Bio-chemistry competency, and Public service competency, which accounts for 70% of the total variance. This study can be a reference for setting the curriculum and educational goals in secondary and college education by showing the diversity of science and technology occupations and the competencies required for STEM occupations.

Issues in Research of Global STEM Education: A Meta Synthesis Approach (국제 STEM 교육 연구에서의 이슈: 메타 종합적 접근)

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the main issues of international STEM education by synthesizing the findings in the field of global STEM education. The data in this study are the results of meta-analysis or systematic literature studies that reflect key issues of STEM education through the review of selection criteria and groups of experts. The following issues of STEM education were selected by conducting a qualitative meta-analysis of a total of 23 studies. First, STEM education is a global educational trend and has been studied in many countries such as the United States, Canada, Australia, Republic of Korea, and Turkey. Second, STEM education contributes positively to the improvement of students' cognitive, affective, psychomotor, and career domains. Third, STEM education has been studied with the use of various instructional tools and technologies. Furthermore, the growth of teachers' expertise in STEM education is one of the main factors for the implementation of successful STEM education. In addition, issues such as diversity, equity, and valid and reliable research design were discussed for the successful practice of STEM education. This study provides implications for the direction of convergence education and practical strategies in South Korea and gives suggestions for future research.

Current trends of stem cell-mediated gene therapy (줄기 세포 분야의 유전자 치료 연구 동향)

  • Recently, stem cell-mediated gene therapy is emerging as a novel therapeutic approach. For the successful gene modification of stem cells, the development of a suitable gene transfer technique needs to be preceded. This review focuses on the various gene transfer techniques based on nonviral and viral vectors, and physical methods. The advantages and disadvantages of each gene transfer method are compared, and the general properties of these vectors are discussed in relation to the gene transfer in stem cell research. This review also highlights the therapeutic application of stem cell-mediated gene therapy. The choice of gene transfer vectors may vary depending on the type of the stem cells and the target of stem cell therapy. Of various gene transfer methods, viral vector-based gene therapy has been emphasized due to the higher transfection efficiency. The current status and up-to-date findings of stem cell-mediated gene therapy are discussed in the viewpoint of the various targets of stem cell therapy such as the modification of stem cell potency, the acceleration of regeneration process and the formation of expressional organization.

User-oriented Information System: Focusing on STEM Field (이용자 중심 정보시스템: STEM 분야 중심으로)

  • In order to effectively provide science, technology, engineering, and medicine (STEM) information, an analysis of information users' needs and understanding of information usage behavior must be preceded. Rapid changes and developments in information and communication technologies and the environment have greatly influenced the user's information usage environment. Based on the changes and characteristics of users' information use and their information needs analysis, active design and improvement of scientific and technical information service system is needed. For this study, a total of 816 participants participated: 204 people in four main contents (papers, reports, trends, and patents) through significant allocation extraction for STEM information users. A survey was conducted to grasp the status of the use of science and technology information using quantitative methods through online surveys for users of each content (papers, reports, trends, patents). Based on the analysis results, the implications for the improvement of STEM field information system were drawn.

Overviews on the Clinical Use of Stem Cells in Orthopaedics (근골격계에서 줄기세포를 이용한 재생치료의 개관)

  • Stem cell research arose from the need to explore new therapeutic possibilities for intractable and lethal diseases. Although musculoskeletal disorders are basically nonlethal, their high prevalence and the relative ease of performing clinical trials have facilitated the clinical application of stem cells in this field. On the other hand, despite the plethora of in vitro and preclinical studies in stem cell research for regenerative medicine in the musculoskeletal system, few reliable clinical studies have been published. Stem cell therapy can be applied locally for bone, cartilage, and tendon regeneration. The candidate disease modalities in bone regeneration include large bone defects, nonunion of fractures, and osteonecrosis. Focal osteochondral defect and osteoarthritis are the current targets for cartilage regeneration. For tendon regeneration, bone-tendon junction problems, such as rotator cuff tears are hot topics in clinical research. To date, the literature supporting stem cell-based therapies comprises mostly case reports or case series.
