This paper evaluates whether a thermodynamic ocean-carbon model can be used to predict the monthly mean global fields of the surface-water partial pressure of $CO_2$ ($pCO_{2SEA}$) from sea surface salinity (SSS), temperature (SST), and/or nitrate ($NO_3$) concentration using previously published regional total inorganic carbon ($C_T$) and total alkalinity ($A_T$) algorithms. The obtained $pCO_{2SEA}$ values and their amplitudes of seasonal variability are in good agreement with multi-year observations undertaken at the sites of the Bermuda Atlantic Timeseries Study (BATS) ($31^{\circ}50'N$, $60^{\circ}10'W$) and the Hawaiian Ocean Time-series (HOT) ($22^{\circ}45'N$, $158^{\circ}00'W$). By contrast, the empirical models predicted $C_T$ less accurately at the Kyodo western North Pacific Ocean Time-series (KNOT) site ($44^{\circ}N$, $155^{\circ}E$) than at the BATS and HOT sites, resulting in greater uncertainties in $pCO_{2SEA}$ predictions. Our analysis indicates that the previously published empirical $C_T$ and $A_T$ models provide reasonable predictions of seasonal variations in surface-water $pCO_{2SEA}$ within the (sub) tropical oceans based on changes in SSS and SST; however, in high-latitude oceans where ocean biology affects $C_T$ to a significant degree, improved $C_T$ algorithms are required to capture the full biological effect on $C_T$ with greater accuracy and in turn improve the accuracy of predictions of $pCO_{2SEA}$.

This study aims to analyze the aerodynamics when the geometry of the turbine rotor is modified. The turbine used in this study is a small engine used in the APU of a helicopter. It is difficult to improve the performance of small engines owing to the structural weakness of the blade tip. Therefore, the improvement of the hub geometry is investigated in many ways. The working fluid of a turbine is a high-temperature and high-pressure gas. The heat transfer rate of the turbine surface should be considered to avoid the destruction of blade owing to the heat load. The SST turbulence model gives an excellent prediction of the aerodynamic behavior and heat transfer characteristics when the numerical simulations are compared with the experimental results. In conclusion, the aerodynamic efficiency is improved when a bulbous design is applied to the leading edge near the hub. The endwall loss is reduced by 15%.

Objective: The present study was to investigate the discrimination capacity of the Performance Oriented Mobility Assessment-Gait Scale (POMA-GS), for predicting falls in stroke survivors. Design: Retrospective cohort study. Methods: Data including the characteristics and number of falls of 52 chronic stroke patients from a rehabilitation center were collected. The number of falls each subject had experienced in the previous year were investigated through interviews. The subjects were divided into two groups depending on the number of falls: if falls occurred twice or more on the basis of the time of study after stroke, they were defined as the falls group and if there was no fall experience or one fall, they were defined as the non-falls group. The subjects were examined with the POMA-GS, and physical functions were examined using by the One Leg Stand Test (OLST), Sit to Stand Test (SST), 10-m Walk Test, Lower Extremity in Fugl-Meyer assessment (FM-LE), and Trunk Impairment Scale (TIS). The validity of POMA-GS for falls prediction was analyzed. Results: In the POMA-GS, which predicts falls in stroke survivors, the cut-off value was 8.5 (sensitivity 72%; specificity 65%) and the area under the curve was 0.75 (95% confidence interval: 0.60-0.90, p<0.007). There was a significant difference in the OLST, SST, FM-LE, and TIS between the subjects with POMA-GS >8.5 and the subjects with POMA-GS ${\leq}8.5$. Conclusions: The POMA-GS could be a useful tool in predicting falls in stroke survivors, as its discrimination capacity and predictive validity is proven satisfactory.
The advent of high resolution products of surface wind and temperature derived by satellite data has permitted us to investigate ocean and atmosphere interaction studies in detail. Especially the Kuroshio extension region of the western North Pacific is considered to be a key area for such studies. We have constructed gridded products of surface wind/wind stress over the world ocean using satellite scatterometer (Qscat/SeaWinds), available as the Japanese Ocean Flux data sets with Use of Remote sensing Observation (J-OFURO). Using new data based on improved algorithm which have been recently delivered, we are reconstructing gridded product with higher spatial resolution. Intercomparison of this product with the previous one reveals that there are some discrepancies between them in short-period and high wind-speed ranges especially in the westerly wind region. The products are validated by not only comparisons with in-situ measurement data by mooring buoys such as TAO/TRITON in the tropical Pacific and the Kuroshio Extension Observation (KEO) buoys, but also intercomparison with numerical weather prediction model (NWPM) products (the NRA-1 and 2). Our products have much smaller mean difference in the study areas than the NWPM ones, meaning higher reliability compared with the NWPM products. Using the high resolution products together with sea surface temperature (SST) data, we examine a new type of relationship between the lower atmosphere and upper ocean in the Kuroshio Extension region. It is suggested that the spatial relation between the wind speed and SST depends upon, more or less, the surrounding oceanic condition.

Course correction munition is a smart projectile which improves its accuracy by the control mechanism equipped in the fuze section with canard. In this paper, various aerodynamic configurations of the fuze section were analysed by utilizing a semi-empirical method and a CFD method. A final canard configuration showing the least drag was then determined. During the CFD simulation, it was found that the k-${\omega}$ SST turbulence model combined with O-type grid base is suitable for the prediction of the base drag. Finally, the aerodynamic characteristics of the smart munition and the change of drag due to the canard installation were analysed.

During atmospheric ascent of a launch vehicle, airborne acoustic loads act on the vehicle and its effect becomes pronounced at transonic speed. In the present study, acoustic loads acting on a hammerhead launch vehicle at a transonic speed have been analyzed using -ω SST based IDDES and the results including mean Cp, Cprms, and PSD are compared to available wind-tunnel test data. Mesh dependency of IDDES results has been investigated and it has been concluded that with an appropriate turbulence scale-resolving computational mesh, the characteristic flow features around a transonic hammerhead launch vehicle such as separated shear flow at fairing shoulder and its reattachment on rear body as well as large pressure fluctuation in the region of separated flow behind the boat-tail can be predicted with reasonable accuracy for engineering purposes.

The coastal water is a space where salmon (Oncorhynchus keta), critical energy-conveying mediator, stay to adapt to different environments while traveling between ocean and river ecosystems for spawning and growth. The mid-eastern coast of Korea (MECW) is the southern limit of salmon distributed in the North Pacific Ocean. Understanding the distribution and migration characteristics of salmon in the MECW is important for the prediction of changes in the amount and distribution of salmon related to changes in the future marine environment. We analyzed the relationship between the salmon migratory timing ascending the Wangpi river and change in vertical seawater temperature and tidal elevation. Overall results highlight that (1) Salmon began to ascend the river when the sea surface water temperature (SST) decreased below 20℃; (2) The number of salmon ascending the river increased when the temperature difference between the upper and lower layers decreased, but decreased when the temperature difference was higher than 5℃; (3) The number of salmon ascending the river peaked, when the SST was 18℃-19℃ and sea levels rose at high tide. This study provide important insight into predicting changes in the ecosystem energy circulation through climate change at its southern distribution limit.

The heat transfer coefficient on the wall, which is used as a boundary condition in the thermal analysis of general contract-divergent supersonic nozzles, affects the thermal analysis accuracy of the entire nozzle. Accordingly, many methods of deriving a heat transfer coefficient have been proposed. In this study, the accuracy of each method was compared. For this purpose, the heat transfer coefficients were calculated through theoretical-based analogy methods, semi-empirical equations, and CFD simulations for the previously performed heat transfer experiment with an isothermal wall and compared with the experimental results. The results show that the Prandtl-Taylor analogy methods and the CFD results with the k-ω SST turbulence model were in good agreement with the experimental results. Furthermore, the Modified Bartz empirical formula showed an overall over-prediction tendency.

In order to detect the Antarctic Polar Front (PF) among the main fronts in the Southern Ocean, this study is based on the combinations of satellite-based sea surface temperature (SST) and height (SSH) observations. For accurate PF detection, we classified the signals as front or non-front grids based on the Bayesian decision theory from daily SST and SSH datasets, and then spatio-temporal synthesis has been performed to remove primary noises and to supplement geographical connectivity of the front grids. In addition, sea ice and coastal masking were employed in order to remove the noise that still remains even after performing the processes and morphology operations. Finally, we selected only the southernmost grids, which can be considered as fronts and determined as the monthly PF by a linear smoothing spline optimization method. The mean positions of PF in this study are very similar to those of the PFs reported by the previous studies, and it is likely to be well represents PF formation along the bottom topography known as one of the major influences of the PF maintenance. The seasonal variation in the positions of PF is high in the Ross Sea sector (${\sim}180^{\circ}W$), and Australia sector ($120^{\circ}E-140^{\circ}E$), and these variations are quite similar to the previous studies. Therefore, it is expected that the detection approach for the PF position applied in this study and the final composite have a value that can be used in related research to be carried out on the long term time-scale.
The prediction of the hydrodynamic performance of a planing hull vessel is an important and challenging topic for computational fluid dynamic (CFD) applications to naval hydrodynamics. In this paper, the resistance and planing attitude analysis for a Fridsma hull, which is a prismatic planing hull, in still water are numerically studied using OpenFOAM. OpenFOAM is an open source code package based on C++ libraries and the finite volume method (FVM) for the discretization of the RANS equation. The volume of fluid method (VOF) is used to capture the water-air interface and the SST ${\kappa}-{\omega}$ model is used for the turbulence simulation. The overset mesh method is used to capture the large motion of the hull at higher speeds. Before the extensive analysis, uncertainty analyses using various time steps and grid sizes were performed for one ship speed case of Fn = 1.19. The results of the present study are compared with those of a model test, other CFD research, and Savitsky's empirical formula. The results of the present study, following the trend of other CFD results, slightly over predict the resistance and under predict the sinkage and, more significantly, the trim.
