In this study, effects of thurster axis tilting angle on the thruster-hull interaction and propulsion performance in a dynamic positioning system of offshore plant are numerically investigated. Straight and 7-degree tilted downward thruster models as a form of ducted propeller are considered. For numerical simulations, Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations with SST turbulence model are solved by using STAR-CCM+. Results show that thruster-hull interaction is reduced in 7-degree tilted thruster model with lower vortex strength between thruster and hull bottom, although the propulsion performance does not have noticeable difference in a bollard condition.
3D simulations based on an impinging jet were carried out to investigate the flow field of a steady downburst and its effects on a high-rise building by applying the SST k-${\omega}$ turbulence model. The vertical profile of radial wind speed obtained from the simulation was compared with experimental data and empirical models in order to validate the accuracy of the present numerical method. Then wind profiles and the influence of jet velocity and jet height were investigated. Focusing on a high-rise building, the flow structures around the building, pressure distributions on the building surfaces and aerodynamic forces were analyzed in order to enhance the understanding of wind load characteristics on a high-rise building immersed in a downburst.

An assessment of two-equation turbulence models, the low Reynolds k-${\varepsilon}$ and k-${\omega}$ SST models, with the compressibility corrections proposed by Sarkar and Wilcox, has been performed. The compressibility models are evaluated by investigating transonic or supersonic flows, including the arc-bump, transonic diffuser, supersonic jet impingement, and unsteady supersonic diffuser. A unified implicit finite volume scheme, consisting of mass, momentum, and energy conservation equations, is used, and the results are compared with experimental data. The model accuracy is found to depend strongly on the flow separation behavior. An MPI (Message Passing Interface) parallel computing scheme is implemented.

The present work reports on a numerical simulation of a compartment fire. The fire was modeled using a simplified approach, where combustion is simulated as a volumetric heat release. Computations were performed with the commercial code CFX 5.6. Radiation was modeled with a differential approximation (P1 model), while turbulence effects upon the mean gas flow were dealt with a SST turbulence model. Simulations were carried out using a transient approach, starting at the onset of ignition. Results are provided for the temperature field time evolution, thus allowing a direct comparison with the analytical and experimental data. The high spatial resolution available for the results proved to be of great utility for a more detailed analysis of the thermal impact on the steel structure.

This paper numerically investigates thermo-flow characteristics of offset strip fins to obtain a correlation between heat transfer and pressure drop. The flow was divided into three regimes, i.e. laminar, transition and turbulent. The predicted j and f values from the SST k-$\omega$ turbulence model agreed with previous correlations with the error less than 20% in transition and turbulent regimes. Heat transfer and pressure drop were predicted by varying Prandtl number from 0.5 to 40. The Prandtl number showed little effects on pressure drop but had great effect on the heat transfer characteristics. An overall correlation to predict j was suggested by incorporating the effect of Pr and a new j correlation was suggested for each Pr.
In the present work, characteristics of the flow in the cage of a steam turbine bypass control valve for thermal power plant are investigated. Experimental measurement for wall static pressure has been carried out to validate numerical solutions. And, the flowfield is analyzed by solving steady three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. Shear stress transport (SST) model is used as turbulence closure. The effects of the flow area between stages of the cage on the pressure drop are also found.

This work presents a numerical investigation of the aerodynamics and aero acoustics of the HVAB rotor in hover conditions. Two fully turbulent models are employed, the one-equation Spalart-Allmaras model and the two-equation k-ω SST model. Transition effects are investigated as well using the Langtry-Menter γ-Re θt transition transport model. The noise generation and propagation are being investigated using the Ffows-Williams Hawking model for far-field noise and the broadband model for near-field noise. Comparisons with other numerical solvers and with the PSP rotor test data are presented. The results are presented in terms of thrust and power coefficients, the figure of merit, surface pressure distribution, and Sound pressure level. Velocity, pressure, and vortex structures generated by the rotor are also shown in this work. In addition, this work investigates the contribution of different blade regions to the overall noise levels and emphasizes the importance of considering specific areas for future improvements.
This paper presents a study of the effects of the free surface to marine propeller including the mesh effect of the models. In the present study, we conduct the numerical simulation for propeller performance employing the openwater test. The numerical simulations compare the meshing strategies for the propeller and show the effects on both thrust and torque. OpenFOAM is applied to solve the propeller problem and then open water performances of KCS propeller (KP505) are estimated using a Reynold-averaged Navier-Stokes equations (RANS) solver and the turbulence of the $K-{\omega}$ SST model. Unstructured meshes are used in the numerical simulation employing hexahedral meshing for mesh generation. The arbitrary mesh interfacing (AMI) and multiple rotating frame (MRF) are compared to define the best meshing strategy. The meshing strategies are evaluated through 3 classifications, i.e., coarse, medium, and fine mesh. Thus, the propeller can be performed utilizing the best mesh strategy. The computational results are validated by comparison with the experimental results. The $K_T$, $K_Q$, and efficiency of the propeller are compared to an experimental result and for all of the meshing strategies. Thus, the simulations show the influence of meshing in order to perform the propeller performances.

In this study, a fluid/structure coupled analysis system for simulating complex flow-induced vibration (FIV) phenomenon of cascades has been developed. The flow is modeled using Euler and Wavier-Stokes equations with different turbulent models. The fluid domains are modeled using the unstructured grid system with dynamic deformations due to the motion of structural boundary. The Spalart-Allmaras (S-A) and the SST ${\kappa}-{\omega}$ turbulent models are used to predict the transonic turbulent flows. A fully implicit time marching scheme based on the Newmark direct integration method is used in order to solve the coupled governing equations for viscous flow-induced vibration phenomena. For the purpose of validation for the developed FIV analysis system, comparison results for computational analyses of steady and unsteady aerodynamics and flutter analyses are presented in the transonic flow region. In addition, flow-induced vibration analyses for the isolated cascade and multi-blades cascade models have been conducted to show the physical fluid-structure interaction effects in the time domain.
