  • In order to find out the casting conditions of the thin wall stainless steel exhaust manifold for automobile, the melt flow and solidification behavior simulated by the Z-CAST program were evaluated, and experimental casting result on the test casting and exhaust manifold of SSC13 alloy were investigated. From the results of this study, it was shown that the calculated results on fluid flow were in good agreement with practical thin wall test castings under the same casting conditions, as pouring metal is austenitic stainless steel(SSC13) and pouring temperature is 1575, 1630, and $1665^{\circ}C$ respectively. That calculated result with designed thin wall exhaust manifold was predicted filling up into the mold cavity, and practical casting was sound. The solidification simulation was predicted shrinkages at the bosses for original exhaust manifold, and designed it without bosses was predicted no defect. Therefore practical exhaust manifold casting was sound and in good agreement with calculated solidification results.

  • Carcass weight (CW) is one of the most important economic traits in pigs, directly affecting the income of farmers. In this study, a genome wide association study was performed to detect significant single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) affecting CW in pigs derived from a $F_2$ intercross between Landrace and Korean native pig (KNP). Using high-density porcine SNP chips, highly significant SNPs were identified on SSC12. Two candidate genes, LOC100523510 and LOC100621652, were subsequently selected within this region and further investigated. Within these candidate genes, five SNPs were identified and genotyped using the VeraCode GoldenGate assay. The results revealed that one SNP in the LOC100621652 gene and four SNPs in the LOC100523510 gene are highly associated with CW. These SNP markers can thus have significant applications for improving CW in KNP. However, the functions of these candidate genes are not fully understood and require further study.

  • This paper describes a low-loss, compact, 40-channel arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) which utilizes a monolithically integrated spot-size converter (SSC) for lowering the coupling loss between silica waveguides and standard single-mode fibers. The SSC is a simple waveguide structure that is tapered in both the vertical and horizontal directions. The vertically tapered structure was realized using a shadow-mask etching technique. By employing this technique, the fabricated, 40-channel, 100 GHz-spaced AWG with silica waveguides of 1.5% relative index-contrast showed an insertion-loss figure of 2.8 dB without degrading other optical performance.

  • Dysphania ambrosioides (L.) Mosyakin & Clemants which belongs to Chenopodiaceae/Amaranthaceae sensu in APG system has been known as a useful plant in various fields as well as an invasive species spreading all over the world. To understand its phylogenetic relationship with neighbour species, we completed chloroplast genome of D. ambrosioides collected in Korea. Its length is 151,689 bp consisting of four sub-regions: 83,421 bp of large single copy (LSC) and 18,062 bp of small single copy (SSC) regions are separated by 25,103 bp of inverted repeat (IR) regions. 128 genes (84 protein-coding genes, eight rRNAs, and 36 tRNAs) were annotated. The overall GC content of the chloroplast genome is 36.9% and those in the LSC, SSC and IR regions are 34.9%, 30.3%, and 42.7%, respectively. Distribution of simple sequence repeats are similar to those of the other two Dysphania chloroplasts; however, different features can be utilized for population genetics. Nucleotide diversity of Dysphania chloroplast genomes 18 genes including two ribosomal RNAs contains high nucleotide diversity peaks, which may be genus or species-specific manner. Phylogenetic tree presents that D. ambrosioides occupied a basal position in genus Dysphania and phylogenetic relation of tribe level is presented clearly with complete chloroplast genomes.
