  • Livestock manure is used as an organic fertilizer to replace chemical fertilizers after sufficient fermentation in an aerobic bioreactor. On the other hand, liquid manure disposal problems occur repeatedly because soil spraying is restricted during the summer when the crops are growing. To use liquid fertilizer (LF) as an additional nutrient source for crops, it is necessary to reduce the amount of suspended solids (SS) in the liquid fertilizer and secure stability problems against pathogenic microorganisms. This study examined the effects of the simultaneous SS removal and E.coli sterilization in the LF using the microbubble (MB) generator (FeMgO catalyst insertion). The remaining SS were further removed using the integrated microbubble and microfilter system. During the floating process in the MB device, the SS were removed by 57.9%, and the coliform group was not detected (16,200→0 MPN/100 mL). By optimizing the HRT of the integrated system, the removal efficiency of the SS was improved by 92.9% under the 0.1h of HRT condition. After checking the properties of the treated LF, 64.5%, 70.1%, 54.9%, and 51.5% of the TCOD, SCOD, PO4-P, and TN, respectively, were removed. The treated effluent from such an integrated system has a lower SS content than that of the existing LF and does not contain coliforms; therefore, it can be used directly as an additional fertilizer.

  • Total phosphorus (TP) and suspended solids (SS) were measured in the discharge waters from 5 drainage basins of Lake Yongdam, from April, 2002 till March, 2004. The responses of SS and TP to rainfall were analyzed and their loadings into Lake Yongdam were calculated. The inflowing rivers into Lake Yongdam were the Juja River, the Jeongja River, the Jinan River, the Geum River and the Guryang River. Among these rivers Jinan River showed the highest TP that fluctuated very much according to the flow rate. TP and the flow rates (Q) of each river showed positive correlations with empirical relationsip of $TP\;=\;6.32Q^{0.30}$ for the Juia River, $TP\;=\;8.58Q^{0.49}$ for the Jeongia River, $TP\;=\;307.92Q^{0.10}$, for the Jinan River, $TP\;=\;17.91Q^{0.47}$, for the Geum River, $TP\;=\;20.11Q^{0.53}$ for Guryang River. In April 2002 ${\sim}$ March 2003, phosphorus loadings from the Juja River, the Jeongja River, the Jinan River, the Geum River and the Guryang River were calculated to be 3,677, 11,430, 36,412, 89,651, and 42,226 kgP ${\cdot}$ $yr^{-1}$ respectively. And the specific loadings from the Juja River, the Jeongia River, the Jinan River, the Geum River and the Guryang River were calculated to be 0.3, 2.9, 13.6, 9.3, and 13.0 kgP ${\cdot}$ $km^{-2}$ ${\cdot}$ $yr^{-1}$ respectively. In April 2002 ${\sim}$ March 2004, the suspended particles loading from the Juja River, the Jeongia River, the Jinan River, the Geum River and the Guryang River were 673, 1,232, 4,232, 30,902, 80,202 ton ${\cdot}$ $yr^{-1}$ respectively. The Guryang River showed the largest contribution of SS loading.

  • BACKGROUND: To design and develop a constructed wetland for effective livestock wastewater treatment, it is necessary to understand the removal mechanisms of various types of pollutants in constructed wetlands. The objective of this study was to evaluate the treatment efficiency of pollutants under different types of fraction in constructed wetland system for treating piggery wastewater. METHODS AND RESULTS: The piggery wastewater treatment plant that consisted of activated sludge tank, aerobic and anaerobic beds was constructed. The concentration of COD(Chemical oxygen demand) in effluent by fraction was 71.5 mg/L for soluble COD, 142 mg/L insoluble COD. The concentration of SS(Suspended solid) in effluent by existing form was 102 mg/L for volatile SS, 15.5 mg/L for fixed SS. The concentration of T-N(Total nitrogen) and T-P(Total phosphorus) in effluent by existing form were 12.8 mg/L and 3.05 mg/L for dissolved form, 35.0 mg/L and 1.93 mg/L for suspended form. The removal efficiencies of COD, SS, T-N and T-P in hot season(summer and autumn) were higher than those in cold season(spring and winter). The removal efficiencies of COD, SS, T-N and T-P in effluent were 98.0, 99.0, 98.2 and 99.2% for all seasons, respectively. CONCLUSION(S): The results indicated that removal types of pollutants were insoluble COD(ICOD), volatile SS(VSS), dissolved T-N(DTN) and dissolved T-P(DTP) in constructed wetlands for treating piggery wastewater.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the reduction effect of non point source (NPS) pollution in Haean highland agricultural catchment ($62.8km^2$) for 13 BMP scenarios under RCP (Representative Concentration Pathway) 4.5 and 8.5 scenarios. Under the present climate condition, the BMP (best management practices) reduction efficiency of SS (suspended solid), T-N (total nitrogen), and T-P (total phosphorus) showed +25.7%, +4.2%, and +16.1% for VFS (vegetative filter strip), +0.1%, +15.6%, and +5.7% for FC (fertilizer control), and +6.3%, -2.9%, and +3.9% for RSM (rice straw mulching) respectively. In general, effective was the best for SS and T-P reductions, and the FC was the best for T-N reduction. The negative effect of T-N on RSM was induced by increase in infiltration and solute transport to baseflow. Under the future climate change scenarios, the SS, T-N, and T-P reduction efficiency showed the range of +1.9~+11.6%, -1.9~+0.2%, and +5.3~+11.9% respectively. The 3 BMPs (VFS, FC, and RSM) application in the future showed negative and little differences (-0.5~+1.6%) for SS and T-N reduction efficiencies while T-P reduction efficiency showed +0.3~+7.6% comparing with the baseline period. To achieve an increase in the reduction efficiency of future SS and T-N by +2~+10%, the combined application of more than two BMPs is necessary.

  • Suspended Solids (SS) generated in rivers are mainly introduced from non-point pollutants or appear naturally in the water body, and are an important water quality factor that may cause long-term water pollution by being deposited. However, the conventional method of measuring the concentration of suspended solids is labor-intensive, and it is difficult to obtain a vast amount of data via point measurement. Therefore, in this study, a model for measuring the concentration of suspended solids based on remote sensing in the Nakdong River was developed using Sentinel-2 data that provides high-resolution multi-spectral satellite images. The proposed model considers the spectral bands and band ratios of various wavelength bands using a machine learning model, Support Vector Regression (SVR), to overcome the limitation of the existing remote sensing-based regression equations. The optimal combination of variables was derived using the Recursive Feature Elimination (RFE) and weight coefficients for each variable of SVR. The results show that the 705nm band belonging to the red-edge wavelength band was estimated as the most important spectral band, and the proposed SVR model produced the most accurate measurement compared with the previous regression equations. By using the RFE, the SVR model developed in this study reduces the variable dependence compared to the existing regression equations based on the single spectral band or band ratio and provides more accurate prediction of spatial distribution of suspended solids concentration.

  • An integrated slow mixing/sedimentation and net fit fiber filtration system has been developed to reduce the high concentrations of suspended solid (SS) and total phosphorus (T-P) in the reject water from sewage/wastewater. A filtration device used in this experiment consists of coagulation, in-line mixing, air injection, slow mixing/sedimentation, and filtration processes. The performance test using this device was carried out with six operational modes for reject water from sewage treatment plant. Experimental conditions used were 16.7, 33.3, 41.7 and 50.0 ton/day of flow rate and 2~4 of Al/P molar ratio. By injection of coagulant in each operational mode, the high removal efficiencies of SS and T-P were obtained, but continuous operation time was decreased to 7.8~11.4 min in most modes. However, when the Mode 5 of the developed filtration device was applied, the continuous operation time was maintained up to 88.2 min. Also, it was found that the continuous operation time in the Mode 5 using the developed system was increased from 8 to 11.3 times longer than those in other modes. Backwashing flow rate was also very low at 5.4% of total filtered water. Therefore, it can be concluded that the Mode 5 of the developed filtration system was the most efficient treatment method for the removal of high concentrations of SS and T-P.

  • Stormwater filtration is widely used for the urban runoff treatment. However, intensive maintenance and lack of information about the performance have resulted in an increased need of proper evaluation. In this study, the performance of an upflow stormwater runoff filtration system, consisting of a supporting unit and a filtration unit filled with a ceramic media, was investigated. The maximum head loss increase was about 3 cm under the suspended solid (SS) load of $30kg/m^2$ and the SS removal was more than 96%, when the filtration velocity was 20-40 m/h. The head loss and the porosity of the media can successfully be described by a power model. It was confirmed that the a significant amount of SS can effectively be removed at supporting unit, minimizing SS load to the filter media bed. Several backwashing strategies have been tested to establish the optimum condition. It was found that the stagnant water discharge is important to minimize the SS release immediately after backwashing. Also, the filter bed loaded with $400-450kg/m^2$ SS can almost completely be washed to reduce the head loss to the that of empty bed. The results in this study indicate that the upflow ceramic media filter is an excellent alternative to stormwater treatment, with high SS removal and long lifespan.

  • A field spectroradiometer SE-590 was used to measure the spectral reflectance of water body. The reflectance was calculated as the ratio of surface water radiance to the standard whiteboard radiance nearly measured at the same time. Water samples were taken simultaneously for determining their chlorophyll-a, suspended solid (SS) and transparency. The relationships between those water quality parameters and spectral reflectance were analy zed using stepwise multiple regression to derive optimal prediction models . The multiple regression was also applied to the SE-590 simulated SPOT bands. The SPOT image of the same day was also analyzed using the same method to compare the statistical results. It showed that the multiple regression models using the SE-590 reflectance data got the best water quality prediction results. The evaluated RMS error of chlorophyll-a, SS and transparency of water quality parameters were 0.57 ug/l, 0.2 mg/l and 0.17 m, respectively, and the RMS errors were 0.36 ug/l, 0.49 mg/l and 0.42 m for SPOT data, respectively. The SE-590 simulated SPOT three bands data obtained the worst results and the RMS errors were 1.77 ug/l, 0.49 mg/l and 0.37 m, respectively.

  • Pretreatment process consisted of submerged hollow-fiber microfiltration(HMF) membrane and spiral-wound nanofiltration(SNF) membrane has been developed by NETEC, KHNP for the purpose of improving the impurities of liquid radioactive waste before entering Selective Ion Exchange System(SIES). The lab-scale combined system was installed at Kori NPP #2 nuclear power plant and demonstration tests using actual liquid radioactive waste were carried out to verify the performance of the combined system. The submerged HMF membrane was adopted for removal of suspended solid in liquid radioactive waste and the SNF membrane was used for removal of particulate radioisotope such as, Ag-l10m and oily waste because ion exchange resin can not remove particulate radioisotopes. The liquid waste in Waste Holdup Tank (WHT) was processed with HMF and SNF membrane, and SIES. The initial SS concentration and total activity of actual waste were 38,000ppb and $1.534{\times}10_{-3}{\mu}Ci/cc$, respectively. The SS concentration and total activity of permeate were 30ppb and lower than LLD(Lower Limit of Detection), respectively.

  • An integrated water quality management of reservoir and river would be required when the quality of downstream river water is affected by the discharge of upstream dam. In particular, for the control of downstream turbidity during flood events, the integrated modeling of reservoir and river is effective approach. This work was aimed to develop a laterally-averaged two-dimensional hydrodynamic and water quality model (CE-QUAL-W2), by which water quality can be predicted in the downstream of Yongdam dam in conjunction with the reservoir model, and to validate the model under two different hydrological conditions; wet year (2005) and drought year (2010). The model results clearly showed that the simulated data regarding water elevation and suspended solid (SS) concentration are well corresponded with the measured data. In addition, the variation of SS concentration as a function of time was effectively simulated along the river stations with the developed model. Consequently, the developed model can be effectively applied for the integrated water quality management of Yongdam dam and downstream river.
