  • The switched reluctance motor (SRM) would have torque ripple if not operated with an MMF waveform specified for switching angle and phase voltage. This paper describes the robustic control scheme that permits the phase torque to be flat by PLL(Phase Locked Loop) controller. In this control scheme, the locked phase signal of PLL controls the switching dwell angle and it's loop filter signal controls the switching voltage adaptively. Experimental results show that stable dynamic performance is obtained for torque and speed together with low torque ripple on the operation of variable loads.

  • The current study presents the design and performance of a novel 4/2 switched reluctance motor (SRM) for a high-speed air blower. With a comparative study of some rotor structures for a high-speed drive, a stepper-type rotor is optimized to produce a continuous torque and a low torque ripple. Rotor pole arc is modified to have a wide continuous output torque region, and air gap is determined to develop less torque ripple. The rotor radius is determined to reduce torque ripple with a reiterative FEM analysis. The designed rotor has three regions: short uniform, long uniform, and nonuniform air-gap region. The positive torque region is wider than a conventional 4/2 SRM without any torque dead zone. A prototype is tested and the efficiency is up to 72[%] at 30,000[rpm], 600[w] output.

  • Single phase switched reluctance motor has a high speed capability, due to its very robust rotor, and requires only one electronic power switch in its control circuitry. The latter feature considerably reduces the cost of the drive system. But it involves starting problem and strongly torque ripple, which means that the motor is not suitable for application that require constant torque or speed. To solve torque ripple and region of these problem, this paper presents a single phase Switched Reluctance Motor model with a barrier rotor pole. Also it is simulated the designed prototype model by FEM for the prediction of characteristics.

  • This paper deals with the influence of the various stator structures in a Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM) on the vibration behaviors. The stator part in SRMs produces most vibrations. Therefore, the geometric design of the stator is necessary to reduce the vibration. The free and forced vibrations for four different stator yoke structures are analyzed by the electromagnetic and structural Finite Element Method (FEM). Then vibration stator structure that offers less is proposed. The modal analysis results of a tested motor are compared with measurements.

  • This paper proposes a new driving scheme for single-phase SRM. The driving scheme is very simple and inexpensive. By use of this scheme, simple power devices based on low switching losses enable to high efficiency SRM drive. Starting, One of the main problem in single-phase SRM is overcame by a new starting algorithm with one hall sensor and a parting magnet. The proposed single phase SRM has a high efficiency and robust drive characteristics compared to that of a universal motor.

  • Energy recovery in the regenerative region is very important when SRM(Switched Reluctance Motor) is used in traction drive. This is because that to reduce energy loss during mechanical braking and/or to have a high efficiency drive during braking. To control excitation voltage in motor operation and regenerative voltage in the generator operation in the SRM, multi-level voltage control is effective. This paper suggests multi-level inverter which is useful for motoring and regenerative operation in SRM.

  • A new excitation method of switched reluctance motor drive is described in this paper. This excitation method produces reluctance torque by mutual action between two phases as well as conventional self reluctance torque due to two phase excitation at a time. In other words, the change of self inductance and mutual inductance are used to produce torque. This paper suggests the operational principle, the mechanism of torque product of switched reluctance motor with two phase excitation. The acoustic noise characteristics of two phase excitation method are described against that of conventional excitation method. The energy conversion ratio is increased because the next phase is excited following one phase excited at the two phase excitation method. Acoustic noise is lower than that of conventional SRM because one of the next two phase is excited already when torque develope.

  • This paper presents a comparison of rotor position estimation of a switched reluctance motor(SRM) with built-in search coils by three methods. The search coil EMFs are not generated in the SRM with built-in search coils at standstill. So an initial rotor position estimation method is needed. In this paper squared euclidean distance, fuzzy logic and neural network methods we proposed for the estimation of initial rotor position. The simulated results of the three methods are compared. The simulated result of the squared euclidean distance method, which has the best performance, is supported by the experimental result.

  • This paper proposes a new stator pole shape having non-uniform air-gap in order to minimize the undesirable torque ripple of switched reluctance motor(SRM). Through numerical analysis using finite element method(FEM) and optimization, the proposed pole-shape-optimized stator is proven to give reduced torque ripple.
