  • Optical properties of sea water were studied in the Sagami Bay, Japan, based on the data obtained from six oceanographic stations in June, 1985. The observation of surface irradiance and underwater irradiance of sea water for eight kind of wavelengths (378, 422, 481, 513, 570, 621, 653, 677 nm) of sun light was conducted using the underwater irradiameter $(Isigawa\;\#\;SR-8)$. The mean attenuation coefficient of the sea water was appeared to be 0.166 $(0.061\~0.644)$ and the attenuation coefficient of the sea water for wavelength appeared such as 0.121 for 378 nm, 0.105 for 422 nm, 0.097 for 481 nm, 0.099 for 513 nm, 0.138 for 570 nm, 0.253 for 621 nm, 0.258 for 653 nm, 0.253 for 677 nm. The transparency was 12.9 m $(7.2\~18m)$, water color was $(5\~10m)$ in the study area and the sun altitude was $70.79^{\circ}\;(57.44^{\circ}\~78.42^{\circ}C)$ The relationship between attenuation coefficient (K) ana transparency (D) was $K=2.87/D(1.06/D\~5.48/D)$. The rates of light penetration for eight kind of wavelenths (378, 422, 481, 513, 570, 621, 653, 677 nm) were computed with reference to the surface light intensity respectively, The mean rate of light penetration in proportion to depths were $77.93\%\;(52.52\~94.06\%)$ in 1 m layer, $35.46\%\;(4.00\~73.64\%)$ in 5m layer, $18.71\%\;(0.24\~54.23\%)$ in 10m layer and $7.00\%\;(0.007\~27.58\%)$in 20m layer. The rate of light penetration at the transparency layer with reference to the surface light intensity was shown as $13.02\%\;(0.42\~34.78\%)$.

  • 'Jungmo1033', a japonica rice variety, was developed by the rice breeding team at the National Institute of Crop Science (NICS) in 1992. It is derived from a cross between a native variety 'Jagwangdo', which has translucent milled rice and medium maturity; and 'Hwayeong', which is an elite line with bacterial blight resistance and mid-late maturity. The heading date of 'Jungmo1033' was August 10 in the middle plain area of Korea, which was two days later than that of 'Hwaseong'. 'Jungmo1033' has a culm length of 79 cm, which was 5 cm shorter than that of 'Hwaseong', and 105 spikelets per panicle. 'Jungmo1033' showed resistance to bacterial blight (K1, K2, and K3 races) and stripe virus, but susceptibility to the K3a race of bacterial blight, dwarf and black-streaked dwarf viruses, and planthoppers. The milled rice of this variety exhibited translucency and a medium short grain shape. It had an excellent appearance and lower amylose content (19.1%) than that of 'Hwaseong'. The characteristics related to grain milling were better than those of 'Hwaseong', especially head rice milling recovery ratio and head rice ratio (94.8%). 'Jungmo1033' showed a milled rice productivity of 5.38 MT/ha at 11 sites under ordinary cultivation conditions. (Registration No. 5723)

  • It is necessary that the old should have the physical and social ability to perform their daily life. This study is to grasp their degree of disability and problems and suggest their solutions. It surveyed the 87 old people over 65 years old from September 1st until September 30th, in 1997. The findings are as follows. 1) The activities of daily living(ADL) to find their degree of physical disability shows that their average performance ability is 75.9% of all the action while 24.1% of all the old people needs the others' help. As they get older and older, the aged drop off in their physical ability, which is related to a statistical sense (p<0.001). 2) The social disability shows that the aged have their great difference from 9.2% to 85.1% in their instrumental activities of daily living(IADL), intellectual ability and social role. 3) A simple analysis shows that the activities of daily living are, in a statistical sense, related to age(p<0.001), the use of elder's hall(p<0.001), the understanding degree of health(p<0.01) and so forth. 4) A simple analysis shows that the instrumental activities of daily living are, in a statistical sense, related to age(p<0.001), the degree of education(p<0.05), the life of leisure(p<0.001), the understanding degree of health and so forth. 5) A multivariate logistic regression analysis shows that the disability of daily living is related to age, the visit of elder's hall, the period of solitary living, instrumental activities of daily living is age and the visit of elder's hall, and social role is the visit of elder's hall and the decree of education, while intellectual activity has no related variables in a statistical sense.
