Seasonal variation in species composition around Dokdo, East Sea of Korea, was investigated using trammel-net catches, from 2006 to 2009. A total of 53 fish species belonging to 23 families in 12 orders were captured; the orders Perciformes (12 families, 22 species) and Scorpaeniformes (four families, 22 species) were dominant. Between 2008 and 2009, 43 species were collected by trammel net. The number of species was highest in August 2009 (25 species) and lowest in February 2009 (11 species). The number of individuals and total biomass peaked in November 2009. Diversity indices for fish catches were highest in August 2008 (2.4368) and lowest in November 2009 (0.4253). The dominant species were Thamnaconus modestus and Sebastes schlegeli. Hierarchical clustering analysis showed five fish groups, with frequency and number of individuals similar to results of correspondence analysis (CA), which showed a closer relationship to the year term than the season term. CA showed that temperature was an important factor influencing fish species richness and abundance. Three main fish assemblage types coexisted around Dokdo: an East Sea coastal fish assemblage, a subtropical fish assemblage, and a cold water fish assemblage.

We monitored the butterfly community dynamics from March to October for the three years (2002, 2003, 2004). The study areas were consisted of the five sectors with pine forest (Pinus rigida) and mixed oak forests at Mt. Midong in Chungwongun, Chungchungbukdo, Korea. We found that the total numbers of butterfly species were 59 species and the total individuals were 1,513. There was no change the number of species (44 species) during the study period but the composition of species and the number of individuals were different such as 414, 561, and 538, respectively. The most abundant species were Minois dryas (25%) in 2002, Polygonia c-aureum (24%) in 2003, and P. c-aureum (22%) in 2004. On the contrary, the number of singleton species was 20 species in 2002, 15 species in 2003, and 15 species in 2004. We found that there was the seasonal difference in species composition of butterfly community. The species diversity of butterfly community was the highest at sector 4 and sector 5 and lowest at sector 2. Main reason of the butterfly dynamics was strongly supposed to the human activity. We could suggest that the butterfly monitoring study must be a good way to measure the change of butterfly habitats including anthropogenic activity and the natural disturbances.

A study on the species composition and seasonal variations of fishery creatures caught by a funnel net was carried out in the coastal water off Dolsan Island, Yeosu from 2002 to 2003. During the study period, a total of 23 fishery creatures species were caught. Seabream(Acanthopagrus schlegeli), sea bass(Lateolabrax japonicus), mullet(Mugil cephalus), puffer(Takifugu niphobles) and rockfish(Sebastes inermis) predominated. These five species accounted for 85.1% of the total number of fishery creatures caught. Seasonal peaks of number of species occurred in summer, while those of number of individuals occurred in autumn. The lowest number of species and individuals were observed in winter. The large annual variation of diversity indices were observed from May to August. These large annual variation of diversity indices were mainly due to predominance of seabream, sea bass and mullet which accounted for most of all fishery creatures caught. The seasonal variations of fishery creatures showed that sea bass and mullet were caught mainly from spring to summer, seabream and puffer were caught mainly in autumn, and rockfish and brotula(Hoplobrotula armata) were caught mainly in winter.
Seasonal variations in species composition and abundance of the fish assemblages in the coastal waters off Gadeok-do were determined using monthly sample collection by a small otter trawl in 2010-2011. Of a total of 65 fishes collected, the dominant species were Leiognathus nuchalis, Clupea pallasii, Thryssa kammalensis, Engraulis japonicus, Repomucenus valenciennei, Sillago japonica, Trachurus japonicus, Pennahia argentatus, Okamejei kenojei, Cynoglossus joyneri, Pholis fangi, Pleuronectes yokohamae, and Zoarces gillii. These 13 fishes accounted for 92.8% of the total number of individuals collected. The number of fish species, number of individuals, biomass, and species diversity indices fluctuated with the seasons. The peak number of fishes occurred in April, whereas the biomass of fishes was highest in August. The numbers and biomass of fishes were lower in February corresponding with the low temperatures, and diversity indices were lower in January than in any other month.
To investigate edge vegetation struxture and species in Odaesan National park, fild survey was excuted July 1-4, 1995 and the results were as follows. Species compasition of edge(0~10m) was dissimilar to that of forest interior(50m~60m) at (Mt.)Odaesan valley. Species diversity indices, number of species, crown coverage and number of individuals were decreased axxording to distance from edge to forest interior. Weigela subsessilis was appeared to be a competitive species at forest edge in temperate forest and edge species appeared only in Odaesan National Park were Clematis heracleaefolia and Spiraea blumei.
This study was to clarify the variations in a marine ecosystem through examining the species composition of benthic algae in the coast of Dokdo Island during summer (June & August, 2003). The total number of species found in benthic algae was 45 composed of 11% green algae, 29% red algae and 60% brown algae. The dominant species were Enteromorpha linza, Cladophora spp. and Codium frgile for green algae, Ecklonia cave, Eisenia bicyclis, Sargassum confusum, S. patens, S. horneri, Myagropsis myagroides for brown algae and Amphiroa cphedrace. A pusilla, Lithophyllum okamurae, Corallina spp. Laurencia pinnata, L. hamata, Chondria crassicaulit, C. dasyphylla, Gelidium amansii, Neosiphonia yendoi and Polysiphonia yendoi for red algae. The number of benthic algal species decreased more in this study than in previous researches. The whitening of the rocky shore might provoke the decrease of benthic algal biomass and species.
Shannon and Simpson indexes are used for species diversity analysis of ecosystem. In species diversity analysis of ecosystem, not only frequency of each species but also survey size have to be considered. In this study, total information composed with knowledge and ignorance was suggested as a species diversity analysis method for ecosystem survey. To apply developed method, flora in the Sangachun river valley was sampled with 19 sites and 198 species. In applying results, Shannon index shows more reasonable results than Simpson index by the variance of sample size but has difficulties of determining the relation of surveying species number and sample site number. Suggested total information can overcome this difficulty by the relation of knowledge and ignorance.
This study was conducted to analyze the distribution of anticancer medicinal plants in Chonbuk area. The major results are as follows; 1. The total number of anticancer medicinal plants were reported 40 families and 83 species. 2. The results of classfied, order Tubiflorates which took majority among others, had 4 Family respectively. 3. A number of species classified by orders are as follows; 13 genus and 13 species in Family Compositae, 6 species in Family Rosaceae, 5 species in Family Leguminosae, 4 species in Family Labiatae and Family Polygonaceae and 3 species in Family Ranunculaceae, Family Rubiaceae respectively.
The testis is an extremely heterogeneous organ, containing numerous compartments types. Morphometric studies were performed of 3 avian species (pigeon, pheasant and chicken) to determine volume density absolute volume, numerical density, total number of serminiferous tubule components, and sperm production, especially those related to the Sertoli cell, and to make comparisons among the species. Volume density of seminiferous tubule components per testis was determined by point counting method. Testis volume and sperm production were measured by routine techniques. Numerical density (the number of cells per unit volume of testis) of seminiferous tubule components per testis was determined by morphometry (Floderus method). The volume density of seminiferous tubules per testis was 91.58, 92.18 and 94.21% in pigeon, pheasant, and chicken, respectively. The volume density of spermatogonium, spermatocyte, spermatid, spermatozoon, and Sertoli cell did not produce significant changes in the three species. The absolute volume of spermatogonium, spermatocyte, spermatid, and Sertoli cell showed significant changes in the three species (p<0.05). The average volume of Sertoli cell ranged from 758.34(pheasant) to 1,212.9 ㎛$^3$(chicken) and was not significantoy different in the three species(p>0.05). The number of Sertoli cells per testis showed significant differences in the three species : 34.52 $\times$10(sup)6, 186.82$\times$10(sup)6, 810.62$\times$10(sup)6 in pigeon, pheasant, and chicken, respectively(p<0.05). The sperm production was significantly different in the three species : 3,018$\times$10(sup)6, 993.9$\times$10(sup)6, and 8.9$\times$10(sup)6 in chicken, pheasant, and pigeon, respectively(p<0.05). These results suggest that number of Sertoli cells may be more important than Sertoli cell size in explaining the difference in sperm production among the three species.
To clarify whether the closely related species living in the same area is a population or populations ecologically, leaf morphology, specific leaf area, and fruit and seed production were studied in the natural group of sect. Pes-gallinaceua of Corydalis of Namhansansung area from 1999 to 2000. There were 352 plants in one square meter and total eight species or varieties were identified. Of the 352 plants, the number of C. turtschaninovii was the most with 103(29.3%), and that of C. ambigua was the next with 78(22.2%), and that of C. turtschaninovii var. fumariaefolia was the smallest with 9(2.6%). In the 28 plants having spotted leaves, central leaflet did not parted or again parted. The extent of partition with the plant was various from non-parted type to perfectly two-parted type (three leaflet). Between two extreme types, there were diverse types so that this character formed a gradient. The rate of length/breadth was in the range of 0.79~2.17. This character was related to the extent of leaflet partition but did not well expressed the distinguishing trait along a species. The number and the type of serration were diverse and there was no sharp borderline among the species or varieties. Ecological properties, specific leaf area, the number of fruit per plant, and the number of seed per fruit, varied with a wide range in a species or variety but differences between species or variety were not significant. Therefore, the Corydalis group studied was regarded as a population on the three criteria: (1) possibility of interbreeding, (2) continuity of leaf morphology, (3) irrelevance between character and species, (4) similarity of several ecological properties.
