  • Evapotranspiration (ET) from the various surfaces needs to be understood because it is a crucial hydrological factor to grasp interaction between the land surface and the atmosphere. A traditional way of estimating it, which is calculating it empirically using lysimeter and pan evaporation observations, has a limitation that the measurements represent only point values. However, these measurements cannot describe ET because it is easily affected by outer circumstances. Thus, remote sensing technology was applied to estimate spatial distribution of ET. In this study, we estimated major components of energy balance method (i.e. net radiation flux, soil heat flux, sensible heat flux, and latent heat flux) and ET as a map using Mapping Evapo-Transpiration with Internalized Calibration (METRIC) satellite-based image processing model. This model was run using Landsat imagery of Gyeongan watershed in Korea on Feb 1, 2003 and Sep 13, 2006. Basic statistical analyses were also conducted. The estimated mean daily ETs had respectively 22% and 11% of errors with pan evaporation data acquired from the Suwon Weather Station. This result represented similar distribution compared with previous studies and confirmed that the METRIC algorithm had high reliability in the watershed. In addition, ET distribution of each land use type was separately examined. As a result, it was identified that vegetation density had dominant impacts on distribution of ET. Seasonally, ET in a growing season represented significantly higher than in a dormant season due to more active transpiration. The ET maps will be useful to analyze how ET behaves along with the circumstantial conditions; land cover classification, vegetation density, elevation, topography.

  • Color consistency in stereoscopic contents is important for 3D display systems. Even with a stereo camera of the same model and with the same hardware settings, complex color discrepancies occur when acquiring high quality stereo images. In this paper, we propose an integrated color matching method that use cumulative histogram in global matching and estimated 3D-distance for the stage of local matching. The distance between the current pixel and the target local region is computed using depth information and the spatial distance in the 2D image plane. The 3D-distance is then used to determine the similarity between the current pixel and the target local region. The overall algorithm is described as follow; First, the cumulative histogram matching is introduced for reducing global color discrepancies. Then, the proposed local color matching is established for reducing local discrepancies. Finally, a weight-based combination of global and local matching is computed. Experimental results show the proposed algorithm has improved global and local error correction performance for stereoscopic contents with respect to other approaches.

  • This research developed an approach to identify ecologically important areas at local scales and explained how the results of this approach could contribute to extend the protected areas in the Republic of Korea (ROK). While most developed countries have considered various biotic and abiotic factors, ecological processes, migration routes, habitat connectivity, ecosystem services, and etc. to determine the protected areas, ROK has considered a few factors focusing on biodiversity, landscape, and the habitats of endangered organisms. However, for sustainable management of our nature, we need comprehensive understanding of various ecosystem factors and interactions among them at local scales in designating protected areas. Forthis, we developed a conceptual model based on the ecological engineering approach and then explained how the results of this approach could contribute to extend the protected areas. In particular, we considered future land-use and climate change in determining the priority areas for novel protected areas. Our research suggested an effective methodology 1) to include various ecosystem factors and 2) to consider future environmental changes as well as current environmental conditions in finding the ecologically important areas and prioritizing these areas. However, our approach has limitations on the real-world applications due to the lack of fundamental information and data on our ecosystems. To improve the effectiveness of our approach in the real-world applications, we need various long-term ecological research results, environmental and ecological monitoring data, and both current and future spatial environmental data.

  • A hard X-ray microscope system for obtaining images of nano-spatial resolution has been widely studied and requires monochromatic X-ray. A multilayer mirror of 84% reflectivity was designed to acquire tungsten characteristic X-ray of 8.4 keV from the white beam generated from an X-ray tube, and the C/W multilayer mirror of $50{\times}50\;mm$ size and 5.65 nm d-spacing was fabricated by the ion-beam sputtering system. The C/W multilayer had a uniformity of 99.5%, and the structure of the multilayer mirror was verified by a TEM image. The obtainable x-ray reflectivity for the C/W multilayer mirror at 8.4 keV was estimated from measuring the X-ray reflectivity using the copper characteristic X-ray of 8.05 keV. Monochromatic X-ray of 8.4 keV was generated by combining a X-ray tube, and the reflectivity and monochromaticity were 77.1% and 0.21 keV, respectively. Monochromatic X-ray generated from the combination of an X-ray tube and an C/W multilayer mirror has enough potential to use X-ray source for hard X-ray microscope system of laboratory size. If the C/W multilayer mirror of d-spacing of a few nanometers can be fabricated, monochromatic X-ray corresponded to 17.5 keV, molybdenum characteristic X-ray, can be obtained and applied to mammography in the medical application.

  • Pedestrians not only walk along roads, but also pass through buildings or across open spaces. This study defines these unusual walk routes as social path. Social path is an informal pedestrian route that is not considered in a pedestrian network, even though it should be regarded as pedestrian route considering the fact that many people actually use this path. In response, current study related to travel behavior cannot evaluate properly due to lack of consideration for realistic travel behavior such as social path. In order to deal with this situation, this study analyzes the effect of social path at two complex centers in Seoul. Evaluation indices are service area analysis and urban network analysis which is one of the spatial network analysis. In particular, we subdivide the network into three steps by the level of network building and analyze each step. As a result, it is revealed that step three which includes social path shows the greatest improvement in pedestrian accessibility. In this regard, we confirm that social path should be considered when evaluating pedestrian accessibility in further studies. Furthermore, a lot of undervalued facilities will be re-appraised in the field of travel behavior.

  • In recent years, phytoremediation, the use of plants to detoxify hydrocarbons, has been a promising new area of research, particularly in situ cleanup of large volumes of slightly contaminated soils. There is increasing need for a mathematical model that can be used as a predictive tool prior to actual field implementation of such a relatively new technique. Although a number of models exist for solute-plant interaction in the vegetated zone of soil, most of them have focused on ionic nutrients and some metals. In this study, we developed a mathematical model for simulation of bioremediation of hydrocarbons in soil, associated with plant root systems. The proposed model includes root interactions with soil-water and hydrocarbons in time and space, as well as advective and dispersive transport in unsaturated soil. The developed model considers gas phase diffusion and liquid-gas mass exchanges. For simulation of temporal and spatial changes in root behavior on soil-water and with hydrocarbons, time-specific distribution of root quantity through soil was incorporated into the simulation model. Hydrocarbon absorption and subsequent uptake into roots with water were simulated with empirical equations. In addition, microbial activity in the rhizosphere, a zone of unique interaction between roots and soil microorganisms, was modeled using a biofilm theory. This mathematical model for understanding and predicting fate and transport of compound in plant-aided remediation will assist effective application of plant-aided remediation to field contamination.

  • Shallow alluvial groundwaters in Korea of tell exceed the Korean Drinking Water Standard for dissolved iron (0.3 mg/L), which is one of the important water quality problems, especially in the use of bank infiltration technique. Using the reactive transport modeling, in this study we simulated the effectiveness of injection-and-pumping technique to remove dissolved iron in groundwater. The results of simulation showed that pumping of groundwater after injection of oxygenated water into aquifers is very effective to acquire the permissible water quality level. Groundwater withdrawal up to several times of irjected water in volume can be applicable to yield drinkable water. Potential problems such as clogging and permeability lowering due to in-situ precipitation of iron hydroxides may be insignificant. We also discuss on the mechanism and spatial extent of iron removal in aquifer.

  • Because of its strong potential for health hazards, the concentration levels of airborne lead (Pb) have been circumscribed by environmental laws in many countries. In this study, we made a comparative study on the environmental behavior of Pb for the acquisition of its distribution characteristics using data sets collected from major cities in Korea for a period of 6 years (1998 through 2003). According to this study, Pb concentration decreased slowly in most industrialized cities of Koreathroughout the whole study. period. In contrast, such temporal signals were not evident in data sets collected from residential, commercial, and grassland areas. Although seasonal patterns generally exhibited the occurrences of high Pb concentration during the spring, results appear to reflect the influence of Asian Dust (AD) in the springtime. The results of our study clearly indicate that Pb distribution is strongly influencedby source types in relation to their land use patterns. Comparison of our Pb data sets with that of other countries indicates that Pb concentration levels obtained from relatively cleaner districts of Korea are still significantly higher than other countries. The results of this analysis generally indicate that Pb concentrations in most areas are affected by the type and strength of man-made activities. Considering that most areas are affected by a variety of pollutants, continuous efforts are needed to control Pb concentrations in the atmosphere.

  • These days, interests on land cover classification using not only multi-sensor data but also thematic GIS information, are increasing. Often, although we have useful GIS information for the classification, the traditional classification method like maximum likelihood estimation technique (MLE) does not allow us to use the information due to the fact that the MLE and the existing computer programs cannot handle GIS data properly. We proposed a new method for updating the image classification using multi-spectral and multi-temporal images. In this study, we have simultaneously extended the MLE to accommodate both multi-spectral images data and land cover data for land cover classification. In addition to the extended MLE method, we also have extended the empirical likelihood ratio estimation technique (LRE), which is one of non-parametric techniques, to handle simultaneously both multi-spectral images data and land cover data. The proposed procedures were evaluated using land cover map based on Landsat ETM+ images in the Anmyeon-do area in South Korea. As a result, the proposed methods showed considerable improvements in classification accuracy when compared with other single-spectral data. Improved classification images showed that the overall accuracy indicated an improvement in classification accuracy of $6.2\%$ when using MLE, and $9.2\%$ for the LRE, respectively. The case study also showed that the proposed methods enable the extraction of the area with land cover change. In conclusion, land cover classification produced through the combination of various GIS spatial data and multi-spectral images will be useful to involve complementary data to make more accurate decisions.
