The abundance of earthworm in the agro-ecosystem was assessed on the basis of 1,846 individuals collected from May to October 2006. Material was found from litter layers in soils by hand sorting and digging. They encompassed 3 families, 5 genera, and 15 species. Species composition and abundance were as follows: Amynthas agrestis 20.9%, Amynthas koreanus 20.3%, Amynthas heteropodus 15.4%, Amynthas sp. 8.7%, Drawida japonica 8.0%, Eisenia fetida 7.2%, Amynthas hilgendorfi 7.0%, Bimastos parvus 3.2%, Amynthas hupeiensis 2.5%, Aporrectodea caliginosa 1.8%, Amynthas corticis 1.8%, Aporrectodea tuberculata 1.3%, Eisenia andrei 1.2%, Amynthas sp. 20.4%, and Amynthas sp. 10.3%. Of 1,046 individuals, the A. agrestis, A. koreanus, and A. heteropodus were the most numerous members with abundance of 56.7%. Disc-shaped male pore region is useful for classification of Amynthas, and in the survey, we collected two new species with male discs from lettuce cultivated region, Amynthas sp. 1 Amynthas sp. 2. The clitellate vs. aclitellate ratio of the earthworm was approximately 1.25:1.0.
Backgrounds: This study investigated whether or not a polymorphism in the gene encoding the surfactant protein A(SP-A) has any bearing on the individual susceptibility to the development of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD) in a genetically homogenous Korean population. Methods: The genotypes of 19 COPD patients and 20 healthy neonates as controls were tested using a polymerase chain reaction followed by restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis for the SP-A gene. Results: The specific frequencies of the 6A2 and 6A18 alleles of SP-A1 and the 1A2 allele of SP-A2 were much higher in the COPD group than control group (p<0.05). However, the frequencies of the 6A3 and 6A4 alleles of SP-A1 and the 1A0 allele of SP-A2 in the COPD group were significantly lower than the control group. In the COPD group, the frequencies of the +50 locus genotypes GG of SP-A1 and the +9 locus genotypes CC of SP-A2 were 85.0% and 60.6%, respectively, and 19.7% and 24.8% in the control group, respectively. The frequencies of the polymorphic genotypes or alleles showed a statistically significant difference between the COPD group and the control group (P<0.05). Conclusion: A genetic polymorphism in SP-A is associated with the development of COPD in the Korean population.
A new limnephilid caddisfly, Nothopsyche bilobata n. sp., is described. The female adult of Apatania martima Ivanov and Levanidova and the larva of Ecclisomyia kamtshatica (Martynov) is newly recorded from Korea. Three undetermined species, Nemotaulius sp. A, Nemotaulius sp. B, and Nothopsyche sp. A, are additionally described.
Among 80 types of yeast isolated from wild flowers in Daejeon, Korea, two species that have not yet been identified by phylogenetic analysis of the internal transcribed spacer-2 (ITS2) genes and 26S rDNA sequences were identified as Candida sp. 44-C-1 and Cryptococcus sp. 9-D-1. Neither of the newly identified species formed ascospores, while Candida sp. 44-C-1 formed pseudomycelium and Cryptococcus sp. 9-D-1 did not.
The fish fauna was investigated on summer (from July 28 to Aug. 2) and winter (December, 1994) at the Munsom in Cheju-do. As a result of this study, the fishes identified in these areas were classified into 79 species involved in 35 families. And seven species unrecorded in Korea were found, i.e. Halicampus boothae, Cirrhitichthys aprinus, Stegastus altus, Parupeneus sp., Pomacentrus sp., Pomacentrus sp., and Pomacentridae sp. In this region large number species of family Pomacentridae (12 species), family Labridae (9 species), Scorpaeinidae(6 species) and Blennidae (5 species) were observed in summer.
The spider fauna of DMZ(Demilitarized Zone) of Chulwon in Kangwon-do, Korea was investigated. As a result, the authors present a list of 54 species of 54 genera in 14 families (2 unidentified species newly known to Korea; Evarch sp(C)., Helicius sp. (A)) and revise Asianellus festivus of the unrecorded genus to be transferred from the genus Phlegra from Korea.
This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of microbial inoculation on sewage sludge composting. The number and species of microorganisms in sewage sludge sampled on February were higher than those sampled on August. The composting of sewage sludge is inhibited by the polyacrylamide cation, which was used as a coagulant and known to repress the growth of microorganisms. The growth of all microorganisms was inhibited by the addition of the polyacrylamide cation at a concentration of more than 0.8%. The species and viable counts of microorganisms were observed to increase during composting sewage sludge by inoculation of the effective microorganisms and addition of the pine tree sawdust as a bulking agent, compared with those without inoculation. A variety of organisms in compost(sewage sludge plus sawdust) were observed after composting for 30 days, such as Fragilaria sp., Proales sp., Vorticella sp., Schizothrix sp., Anabaena sp., Zoothaminium sp., Epstylis sp., Arcella sp., Balantidium sp., Actinophrys sp., Synedra sp., Euglypha sp., Ulothrix sp., Anacystis sp., and Clostium sp.

To improve sediment quality in eutrophic coastal areas using benthic microalgae, we examined the effects of temperature and salinity on the growth of benthic microalgae Achnanthes sp., Amphora sp., Navicula sp. and Nitzschia sp. isolated from Sujeong Bay, Korea, using batch cultures. The maximum growth rates were obtained under the combined temperature and salinity conditions of $25^{\circ}C$ and 25 psu for Achnanthes sp. (0.60 /day), $15^{\circ}C$ and 25 psu for Amphora sp. (0.56 /day), $20^{\circ}C$ and 30 psu for Navicula sp. (0.53 /day), $20^{\circ}C$ and 25 psu for Nitzschia sp. (0.48 /day). Considering these results of temperature and salinity conditions required for optimum growth (${\geq}$ 70% of maximum specific growth rate), Amphora sp. Navicula sp. and Nitzschia sp. were characterized as eurythermal and euryhaline species, while Achnanthes sp., which exhibited extremely low survival at low temperature. In conclusion, Amphora sp., Navicula sp. and Nitzschia sp. may be useful species for phytoremediation, to control eutrophication and hypoxic water and thus improve environmental conditions of polluted coastal areas.
Biphenyl 1000 mg/L에서 최대성장율($\mu_{max}$)은 0.34 $day^{-1}$, 0.26 였다.
