The beneficial effects of Eisenia fetida on soil properties have been attributed to their interaction with soil microorganisms. The bacterial diversity of the intestinal tract of E. fetida was investigated by culture-dependent and culture-independent methods including denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) and pyrosequencing analyses. In a pure culture, Lysinibacillus fusiformis (51%), Bacillus cereus (30%), Enterobacter aerogenes (21%), and L. sphaericus (15%) were identified as the dominant microorganisms. In the DGGE analyses, B. cereus (15.1%), Enterobacter sp. (13.6%), an uncultured bacterium (13.1%), and B. stearothermophilus (7.8%) were identified as the dominant microorganisms. In the pyrosequencing analyses, Microbacterium soli (26%), B. cereus (10%), M. esteraromaticum (6%), and Frigoribacterium sp. (6%) were identified as the dominant microorganisms. The other strains identified were Aeromonas sp., Pseudomonas sp., Borrelia sp., Cellulosimicrobium sp., Klebsiella sp., and Leifsonia sp. The results illustrate that culture independent methods are better able to detect unculturable microorganisms and a wider range of species, as opposed to isolation by culture dependent methods.
This study was carried out to investigate the possibility to utilize feather meal by bacterial strains. A bacterial strain SE-103 producing keratinolytic enzyme was isolated from the soil of the poultry slaughterhouses. It was identified as Bacillus sp. by judging from its morphological and physiological characteristics. Subsequently the optimal culture conditions for the production of keratinolytic protease by Bacillus sp. SE-103 were investigated. The composition of optimal medium was 3.0% glucose, 0.4% urea, 0.2% $NaNO_3$, and 0.15% KCl. In addition, optimal initial pH and temperature were 6.0 and $35^{\circ}C$, respectively.
Parasites of freshwater fishes in Cheju-do were studied from May 1989 to April 1990, and incidence of infection in 16 fish species was reported. Protozoan parasites (Trichodina sp., Chilodonella sp., Ichthyophthirius sp., Vorticella sp., Myxidium sp., Myxobolus sp., Henneguya sp:, Ichthyobodo sp., and Trychophrya sp.), water mold (Saproregnia sp.), two monogenes (Dactylogyrus sp. and Gyrodactylogyrus sp.), Trematods, Cestods, Nematods, Acanthocephalas, parasitic copepods(Lernaea sp. and Pseudergasilus sp.) and a Hirudinea were recognized as freshwater fish parasites in Cheju-do. Trichodina sp. showed the highest infection rate (18.3%). Fifty seven individual fishes out of 311 were infected by this parasite. Nematods showed the second highest infection rate (13.5%). Dactylogyrus sp., Acanthocephalas, and Trematods showed the third (4.8%), fourth (4.2%), and fifth (2.6%) infection rate respectively. Of the 16 fish species Cryptocentrus filifer (Gobiidae) showed the highest infection rate. Nineteen fish out of 28 have Trichodina sp., and 14 fish out of 28 have Nematods. Those infection rates were 67.9% and 50.0% respectively. No parasites were collected from the fishes of Gwangryung vally, Dosoon-chun, Gangjeong-chun, and Hyodon-chun.
This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of microbial inoculation on sewage sludge composting. The number and species of microorganisms in sewage sludge sampled on February were higher than those sampled on August. The composting of sewage sludge is inhibited by the polyacrylamide cation, which was used as a coagulant and known to repress the growth of microorganisms. The growth of all microorganisms was inhibited by the addition of the polyacrylamide cation at a concentration of more than 0.8%. The species and viable counts of microorganisms were observed to increase during composting sewage sludge by inoculation of the effective microorganisms and addition of the pine tree sawdust as a bulking agent, compared with those without inoculation. A variety of organisms in compost(sewage sludge plus sawdust) were observed after composting for 30 days, such as Fragilaria sp., Proales sp., Vorticella sp., Schizothrix sp., Anabaena sp., Zoothaminium sp., Epstylis sp., Arcella sp., Balantidium sp., Actinophrys sp., Synedra sp., Euglypha sp., Ulothrix sp., Anacystis sp., and Clostium sp.
This study was carried out to investigate the distribution of egg parasitoids from green rice leafhopper, Nephotettix cincticeps Uhler, from the middle of August through the early September in southern rice cultural areas. The results were obtained as follow. 1. Four species of egg parasitoids, Gonatocerus sp. A and B, Paracentrobia andoi and Anagrus sp. are newly recorded from the eggs of green rice leafhopper. 2. Egg parasitism rates of Gonatocerus sp. were varied from $41.0\~73.9\%$ on an egg mass basis and from $29.7\~49.0\%$ on basis of egg. Percent parasitism rates by Paracentrobia andoi were $0\~9.7\%$ on an egg mass basis and from $2.1\~12.6\%$ on basis of egg. Gonatocerus sp. was dominant egg parasitoid in the parasitism rate than Paracentrobia andoi.

Antibiotic resistant microbes were isolated in catfish, trout, eel and loach aquaculture effluent. The distribution of antibiotic resistant microbes in aquaculture effluent and the disinfection efficiency of antibiotic resistant microbes by electron beam irradiation were investigated. It was shown that the multi-drug resistant bacteria were Aeromonas sp., Citrobacter sp., Bacillus sp., Marinobacter sp., Pantoea sp., Pseudomonas sp. and Enterobacter sp. in aquaculture effluent. 41.7% of total strains showed the resistance against one antibiotic agent, and 58.3% of total strains showed the resistance against more than two antibiotics. It was evidently shown that the toxicity and physicochemical properties of antibiotics can be estimated using Quantitative Structure Analysis Relationship (QSAR). Electron beam irradiation was very effective for the disinfection of antibiotic resistant bacteria from aquaculture effluent, in which the disinfection efficiency was approximately 99.9% with electron beam of 1 kGy.
The objective of this paper is to estimate the DMT utility function for the transportation mode choice using SP survey. With the freight OD data the estimated utility function can be used as a basic data for forecasting DMT market. 3 alternatives of transportation mode are considered in SP survey; railway, road and DMT. The utility functions are developed according to the freight items, which are container, steel and chemical product. In this study the attribute variable are chosen as time, cost and reliability. The number of level for attribute variables are 3. The high valve is determined as +10% above the standard and the low value -20% below the standard.
The fauna and the distribution of plant parasitic namatodes were investigated by smapling about five hundred grams of soil around roots of mulberry trees from 929 mulberry fields in Korea. Of fourteen genera detected on mulberry fields, Paratylenchus aciculus, P. projectus, P. morius, Helicotylenchus dihystera, Meloidogyne arenaria were found to be parasitic to mulberry. Among them Paratylenchus species were the most abundant in mulberry fields, but Tylenchorhynchus sp., Aphelenchus sp., Helicotylenchus sp., and Meloidogyne sp. were also observed in high frequency. Meloidogyne species were observed in high frequency in Jeonbuk, Gyeonggi and Jeonnam, Helicotylenchus sp., in Gyeongnam and Gyeonggi, Xiphinema sp., in Jeonbuk and Jeonnam, and Paratylenchus sp., in Gyeonggi, Gyeongbuk, Gyeongnam, and Jeonnam. The growth of mulberry was poor as the increase of density of Paratylenchus sp.
Plant-parasitic nematodes were surveyed at peach orchards in Gyeongbuk province for three years from 2000 to 2002. Species, density, frequency, Simpson's index, Shannon and Wiener index, and prominence value were analyzed. Plant-parasitic nematodes were isolated from 97 orchards out of 124 orchards. More important plant-parasitic nematode genera on peach were Tylenchorhynchus nudus, Criconemoides informis, Paratylenchus elachistus, Pratylenchus vulnus, and Helicotylenchus digonichus. Aphelenchus sp., Tylenchus sp., Heterodera sp., Scutellonema sp. were found, but were not important. Root-knot nematodes were not found even though they were serious in foreign countried.
