  • Increasing amounts of ships exhaust gases emitted worldwide forced the International Maritime Organization to issue some restricted maritime legislation for reducing the adverse environmental impacts arising from such emissions. Consequently, ships emission reduction became one of the technical and economical challenges that facing the ships, operators. The present paper addresses the different strategies that can be used to reduce those emissions, especially nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxides. The strategies included: applying reduction technologies onboard, using of alternative fuels, and follows one of fuel saving strategies. Using of selective catalytic reduction and sea water scrubbing appeared as the best reduction technologies onboard ships. Moreover, among the various proposed alternative fuels, natural gas, in its liquid state; has the priority to be used instead of conventional fuels. Applying one of those strategies is the matter of ship type and working area. As a numerical example, the proposed methods were investigated at a high-speed craft operating in the Red Sea area between Egypt and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The results obtained are very satisfactory from the point of view of environment and economic issues, and reflected the importance of applying those strategies.

  • On the study, The activated carbon assemblies(ACA) were prepared by activation of the coated glass mat(woven type) with phenolic resin at $700^{\circ}C$ under $N_2$ after drying and curing processes. Surface of the ACA was continuously modified with $N_2$, $CO_2$ or $NH_3$ at $700^{\circ}C$ for 2 hour for comparison of adsorptive characteristics between the ACA and commercial activated carbon cloth. The ACA showed high surface areas up to $2440\;m^2$/g when converted into the coated carbon base, and the surface was investigated by FT-IR and XPS. The basic ACA modified with $NH_3$ displayed the efficient removal capability of $SO_2$, which is 75% of that in commercial activated carbon cloth. Therefore, it has proved the applicability of ACA as an inexpensive materials for Dry de-SOX system.

  • Lymphatic vessels are essential to regulate interstitial fluid homeostasis and diverse immune responses. A number of crucial factors, such as VEGFC, SOX18, PROX1, FOX2C, and GJC2, have been implicated in differentiation and/or maintenance of lymphatic endothelial cells (LECs). In humans, dysregulation of these genes is known to cause lymphedema, a debilitating condition which adversely impacts the quality of life of affected individuals. However, there are no currently available pharmacological treatments for lymphedema, necessitating identification of additional factors modulating lymphatic development and function which can be targeted for therapy. In this report, we investigate the function of genes associated with Bone Morphogenetic Protein (BMP) signaling in lymphatic development using zebrafish embryos. The knock-down of BMP type II receptors, Bmpr2a and Bmpr2b, and type I receptors, Alk3 and Alk3b, as well as SMAD5, an essential cellular mediator of BMP signaling, led to distinct lymphatic defects in developing zebrafish. Therefore, it appears that each constituent of the BMP signaling pathway may have a unique function during lymphatic development. Taken together, our data demonstrate that BMP signaling is essential for normal lymphatic vessel development in zebrafish.

  • Since 2020, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has updated regulations on the sulfur content to be less than 0.5% in exhaust gas emitted from ships. Accordingly, the exhaust gas post-treatment device for ships, which is SOx/NOx reduction technology, was introduced. However, the exhaust gas post-treatment device is suffering corrosion because of the harsh corrosive environment formed by sulfate and chlorine oxide through the desulfurization process. In this investigation, cyclic potentiodynamic polarization (CPDP) experiment for UNS S31603 and UNS N08367 was performed in a green death solution that simulates the environment of a desulfurization device. The corrosion rate of UNS S31603 at the highest temperature was about 3 times higher than that of UNS N83067. Also, electron microscope scan revealed corrosion type UNS N83067 presents intergranular corrosion tendency. On the other hand, UNS S31603 was observed as general corrosion. The α values of UNS N08367 at 30 ℃ and 60 ℃ were higher than those of UNS S31603, thus UNS N08367 is considered to have a higher local damage tendency. Whereas, since the α value of UNS S31603 at 90 ℃ is larger than that of UNS N08367, UNS S31603 is considered to have a higher local damage trend.

  • A fin channel with a fin width of 20 nm and a gradually increased source/drain extension regions are fabricated on a bulk silicon wafer by using a three-dimensional selective oxidation. The detailed process steps to fabricate the proposed fin channel are explained. We are demonstrating their preliminary characteristics and properties compared with those of the conventional fin field effect transistor device (FinFET) and the bulk FinFET device via three-dimensional device simulation. Compared to control devices, the three-dimensional selective oxidation fin channel MOSFET shows a higher linear transconductance, larger drive current, and lower series resistance with nearly the same scaling-down characteristics.

  • The chemical investigation of the 90% EtOH extract from Cicadidae Periostracum led to the isolation and identification of seven known N-acetyldopamine dimers (1-7). These compounds were identified by comparing mass spectrometry data and NMR spectroscopic data with those previously reported. In this study, complete interpretation of 1D and 2D NMR data of 1 and 2 were reported for the first time. In addition, compounds 3 and 4 were isolated from this material for the first time. All isolates were obtained as racemic mixtures, as confirmed by chiral HPLC. Furthermore, we evaluated the neuroprotective activities of compounds 1-7 and found that compounds 1, 5, and 6 significantly attenuated rotenone-induced death of SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells at a concentration of 100 μM. Parallel to this result, compounds 3 and 6 displayed antioxidant effects in the cytoplasm, as determined by CM-H2DCFDA fluorescence intensity, while compounds 1 and 5 showed antioxidant effects in the mitochondria, as assessed by MitoSox fluorescence intensity. Overall, these results suggest that some of these compounds protect neuroblastoma cells by ameliorating the release of reactive oxygen species. Further studies are warranted to elucidate the underlying mechanisms by which these compounds exhibit antioxidant and neuroprotective actions.

  • IMO(International Maritime Organization) continues to strengthen environmental regulations on exhaust gases such as CO2, NOx, SOx. As for sulfur oxides, from 1 January 2020, all ships on international voyages must use fuel with a sulfur content of 0.5% or less. Or, it is obligatory to use an exhaust gas treatment device that has the same effect. Shipping companies are using low-sulfur oil, replacing them with LNG fuel, or installing scrubbers that suppress sulfur oxide emissions. In the case of ships using bunker C oil, the load on the engine is lower when entering and departing, so the exhaust gas pressure is lowered and the scrubber cannot be properly utilized. Therefore, diesel oil with low sulfur content is used when entering and leaving the coast. When diesel oil is used, exhaust gas is directly discharged through the control system and piping system, and when bunker C oil is used, sulfur oxides are reduced by scrubbers through other control systems and piping systems to discharge exhaust gas. Accordingly, a company has developed a system called a three-way damper valve that can control exhaust gas emissions while integrating these two control systems and piping systems into one. In this study, the control characteristics of the integrated exhaust gas control system and structural safety against external loads in a high-temperature exhaust gas environment were reviewed.

  • There is growing concern over the effects of global warning. In response, the power generation sector must consider a wider range of systems and fuels to generate power. One of the classes of solid fuels that is being increasingly developed is biomass. However, one of the most serious problems that biomass plants face is severe corrosion. To mitigate the problem, various approaches have been proposed in terms of additive utilization. This study is based on the results obtained during the co-combustion of wood chip and waste wood in a circulating fluidized bed boiler (CFBC boiler). The KCl concentration was reduced from 59.9 ppm to 3.9 ppm during the injection of ammonium sulfate, and NOx was reduced by 25.5 ppm from 30.6 ppm to 5.1 ppm. However, SOx increased by 110.2 ppm from 33.2 ppm to 143.4 ppm, and HCl increased by 71.5 ppm from 340.5 ppm to 412.0 ppm. Thus, we confirmed that the attitude of the superheater tube was reduced by 87 ~ 93%, and the injection of ammonium sulfate was effective in preventing high-temperature corrosion.

  • With global warming and pollution problems, accurate forecasting of the harmful gases would be an essential alarm in our life. In this paper, we forecast the emission of the five gases(SOx, NO2, NH3, H2S, CH4) using the time series model of ARIMA, the learning algorithms of Random forest, and LSTM. We find that the gas emission data depends on the short-term memory and behaves like a random walk. As a result, we compare the RMSE, MAE, and MAPE as the measure of the prediction performance under the same conditions given to three models. We find that ARIMA forecasts the gas emissions more precisely than the other two learning-based methods. Besides, the ARIMA model is more suitable for the real-time forecasts of gas emissions because it is faster for modeling than the two learning algorithms.

  • Ginsenoside Rb2 is an active protopanaxadiol-type saponin, widely existing in the stem and leave of ginseng. Rb2 has recently been the focus of studies for pharmaceutical properties. This paper provides an overview of the preclinical and clinical pharmacokinetics for Rb2, which exhibit poor absorption, rapid tissue distribution and slow excretion through urine. Pharmacological studies indicate a beneficial role of Rb2 in the prevention and treatment of diabetes, obesity, tumor, photoaging, virus infection and cardiovascular problems. The underlying mechanism is involved in an inhibition of oxidative stress, ROS generation, inflammation and apoptosis via regulation of various cellular signaling pathways and molecules, including AKT/SHP, MAPK, EGFR/SOX2, TGF-β1/Smad, SIRT1, GPR120/AMPK/HO-1 and NF-κB. This work would provide a new insight into the understanding and application of Rb2. However, its therapeutic effects have not been clinically evaluated. Further studies should be aimed at the clinical treatment of Rb2.
