  • The speed of sound (SOS) value is an indicator of bone mineral density (BMD). Previous genome-wide association (GWA) studies have identified a number of genes, whose variations may affect BMD levels. However, their biological implications have been elusive. We re-analyzed the GWA study dataset for the SOS values in skeletal sites of 4,659 Korean women, using a gene-set analysis software, GSA-SNP. We identified 10 common representative GO terms, and 17 candidate genes between these two traits (PGS < 0.05). Implication of these GO terms and genes in the bone mechanism is well supported by the literature survey. Interestingly, the significance levels of some member genes were inversely related, in several gene-sets that were shared between two skeletal sites. This implies that biological process, rather than SNP or gene, is the substantial unit of genetic association for SOS in bone. In conclusion, our findings may provide new insights into the biological mechanisms for BMD.

  • The electrothermal characteristics of a high voltage LIGBT(Lateral Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor) using thin silicon on insulator (SOI) and silicon on sapphire (SOS) such as thermal conductivity and sink is analyzed by MEDICI. The device simulations demonstrate that the thermal conductivity of the buried oxide is an important parameter for modeling of the thermal behavior of SOI devices. In this paper we simulated the thermal conductivity and temperature distribution of a SOI LIGBT with an insulator layer of SiO$_2$ and $Al_2$O$_3$ at before and after latch-up and verified that the SOI LIGBT with the $Al_2$O$_3$ insulator had good thermal conductivity and reliability.

  • In order to determine the effectiveness of linoleic acid(LA) to inhibit carcinogens/mutagens-induced mu-tagenesis, Ames test using Salmonella typhimurium TA100 and the SOS chromotest using E. Coli PQ37, were carried out. The inhibitory effect of LA(1%) on the Ames mutagenicity test were 98%, 78%and 69% mediated by aflatoxin B₁(AFB₁), N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine(MNNG) and 4-nitroquinoline-1-oxide(4-NQO), respectively. LA exhibited a strong antimutagenic activity aganist indirect mutagen, AFB₁whereas exhibited the same concentration of LA showed weaker inhibitory effects on direct mutagens of MNNG and 4-NQO than that AFB₁. LA also reduced the SOS responses induced by MNNG and 4-NQO significantly. This result showed a possibility that LA can be a protective agent in early step of cancinogenesis.

  • `SOS', Simulator Of Safety assessment for fire, was developed to simulate fire safety assessment for a structure which is geometrically complex. The program(SOS) is intended to use for searching as well as designing tools to analyse the evacuation safety through a wide range of structure conditions. The computer program has a function which importing FDS's calculating results to each individual resident in the structure. These attributes include a walking speed reduction by producing visibility reduction for each person on the fire. $A^*$ pathfinding algorithm is adopted to calculate the simulation of escape movement, overtaking, route deviation, and adjustments individual speeds in accordance with the proximity of crowd members. This SOS program contributes to a computer package that evaluates the fire safety assessment of individual occupants as they walk towards, and through the exits especially for building, underground spaces like a subway or tunnel.

  • Lubricating softner(SOS-2) for permanent press(PP) finish was prepared by blending water, beef tallow hardened oil for improving softness, and the emulsion which was synthesized from N-hexadecanoyl-N,N'-bis(2-hexadecamidoethyl)amine as a softening component and silicone oil KF-96 as a lubricating component. The prepared SOS-2 and the PP finishing resin were applied to PP finishing cotton broad cloth and P/C gingham samples using one bath method. The properties such as tear strength, crease recovery, bending resistance test were tested. The samples treated with SOS-2 and PP finishing resin have improved properties, compared with nontreated samples, those treated only with PP finishing resin, those treated with commercial PP finishing softners and PP finishing resin.

  • Despite the continuous development of phenology detection studies using satellite imagery, verification through comparison with the field observed data is insufficient. Especially, in the case of Korean forests patching in various forms, it is difficult to estimate the start of season (SOS) by using only satellite images due to resolution difference. To improve the accuracy of vegetation phenology estimation, this study reconstructed the large scaled forest type map (1:5,000) with MODIS pixel resolution and produced time series vegetation phenology curves from Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) derived from MODIS images. Based on the field observed data, extraction methods for the vegetation indices and SOS for Korean forests were compared and evaluated. We also analyzed the correlation between the composition ratio of forest types in each pixel and phenology extraction from the vegetation indices. When we compared NDVI and EVI with the field observed SOS data from the Korea National Arboretum, EVI was more accurate for Korean forests, and the first derivative was most suitable for extracting SOS in the phenology curve from the vegetation index. When the eight pixels neighboring the pixels of 7 broadleaved trees with field SOS data (center pixel) were compared to field SOS, the forest types of the best pixels with the highest correlation with the field data were deciduous forest by 67.9%, coniferous forest by 14.3%, and mixed forest by 7.7%, and the mean coefficient of determination ($R^2$) was 0.64. The average national SOS extracted from MODIS EVI were DOY 112.9 in 2014 at the earliest and DOY 129.1 in 2010 at the latest, which is about 0.16 days faster since 2003. In future research, it is necessary to expand the analysis of deciduous and mixed forests' SOS into the extraction of coniferous forest's SOS in order to understand the various climate and geomorphic factors. As such, comprehensive study should be carried out considering the diversity of forest ecosystems in Korea.

  • Antimutagenic effect of chitosan hydrolysates was investigated using Salmonella typhimurium reversion assay and SOS chromotest against 3-amino-1-methyl-5H-pyrido[4,3-b]lindole(Trp-P-2), aflatoxin $B_1$, 2-nitrofluorene and 4-nitroquinoline oxide. After partial acid hydrolysis of chitosan, six fraction of different molecular size were obtained by ultrafiltration. Chitosan hydrolysates showed antimutagenic effect of $0{\sim}78%$ on Trp-P-2, $0{\sim}92%$ on aflatoxin $B_1$ and $0{\sim}51%$ on 2-nitrofluorene in Salmonella typhimurium reversion assay. Inhibitory effect in Salmonella typhimurium reversion assay showed the highest at 5% concentration of fraction 6 in Trp-P-2, 10% concentration of fraction 5 in aflatoxin $B_1$ and 5% concentration of fraction 6 on 2-nitrofluorene. In SOS chromotest, chitosan hydrolysates showed anitimutagenic effect of $0{\sim}54%$ on Trp-P-2 and $0{\sim}77%$ on 4-nitroquinoline oxide, These results suggest that high molecular weight fraction of chitosan hydrolysates (MW>30,000) in most effective to inhibit mutagenicity of tested mutagens.
