  • In the present study, we first report the seroprevalence of Dirofilaria immitis in dogs in Shenyang, northeastern China. Sera from 528 randomly selected dogs were examined for D. immitis antigen using SNAP$^{(R)}$4Dx test kit; 12.7% tested showed seropositive. No significant difference of infection was observed in different genders and breeds (P>0.05), but the difference was significant in different age groups and rearing conditions (P<0.05). The result suggested that the risk of exposure to D. immitis in dogs is high in Shenyang, and should be given attention.

  • To investigate the relationship of wheat single kernel characteristics with end-use properties, 183 soft wheat cultivars and lines were evaluated for milling quality characteristics (kernel hardness, kernel and flour protein, flour ash), and end-use properties (i.e., as ingredients in sugar-snap cookies, sponge cake). Significant positive correlations occurred among wheat hardness parameters including near-infrared reflectance (NIR) score and single kernel characterization system (SKCS). The SKCS characteristics were also significantly correlated with conventional wheat quality parameters such as kernel size, wheat protein content, and straight-grade flour yield. The cookie diameter and cake volume were negatively correlated with NIR and SKCS hardness, and there was an inverse relationship between flour protein contents and kernel weights or sizes. Sugar-snap cookie diameter was positively correlated with sponge cake volume.

  • Since glass-fiber reinforced composite decks have high-strength, light-weight and high durability, many researches on the composite decks for bridges are currently performed and many composite decks are developed. Some of the developed composite decks can be applied as rigmats for temporary roads such as oil developing temporary roads. In this paper, a composite deck for rigmat is developed and studied. Structural behavior of the developed composite deck for rigmat is verified by both analysis and experiment.

  • The purpose of this study was to measure roughness on the polished surfaces of composite resin, and was to observe the polished surfaces under Scanning Electron Microscope. The surface roughness tester (Surfcom 700A Semitsu Profilometer Tokyo. Japan) was used to measure roughness of polished surfaces. In this study, 4 brands of composite resin were examined, Pyrofil bond anterior Bell-Feel anterior Clearfil F II and Microrest A.P. White point, Silicone point, Super snap, and Sof-Lex medium disc as cutting instrument, and celluloid matrix were used. The results obtained were as follows. 1) The celluloid matrix produced the smoothest surfaces. 2) Microrest composite resin had smoother surface than any other composite resins after polishing. 3) The values of surface roughness made by White point, Silicon point and Super snap were similar. 4) The surfaces made by Sof-Lex medium disc was smoother than the surfaces made by any other polishing instruments.

  • This study examined the effects of Cornus fructus addition to suger snap cookies on WRC (water rentention capacity) and AWRC (alkaline water retention capacity). WRC and AWRC increased as more Cornus fructus powder was added, whereas the sedimentation value and Pelshenke value decreased. Regarding cookie color, L value decreased, whereas the a and b values increased. As the cookie diameter became smaller, thickness increased and spread factor decreased. Hardness of the cookies decreased, and preference was highest for cookies with 5% added Cornus fructus. The preferences for cookies were in the following order: 7% < 3% < 1% < 0% < 5% addition. In conclusion, addition of less than 5% Cornus fructus powder was the most desirable. To complement cookie appearance, it seems necessary to adjust the water content of Cornus fructus powder or add an emulsifier.

  • This paper presents a bending propagating actuation using SMA (Shape Memory Alloy) spring for an effective shape transition of a flytrap-inspired soft morphing structure. The flytrap-inspired soft morphing structure is made from unsymmetric CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Prepreg) structure which shows bi-stability and snap-through phenomenon. For a thin and large curved bistable CFRP structure, SMA spring is more acceptable than SMA wire and piezoelectric actuator which used in previous investigations. A bending propagating actuation is proposed which can induce snap-through of the bi-stable CFRP structure effectively. From this research, effective shape transition of soft morphing structure is possible.

  • Nonlinear equations of structures are generally solved numerically by the iterative solution of linear equations. However, this iterative procedure diverges when the tangent stiffness is ill-conditioned which occurs near limit points. In other words, a major challenge with simple iterative methods is failure caused by a singular or near singular Jacobian matrix. In this paper, using the Newton-Raphson algorithm based on Davidenko's equations, the iterations can traverse the limit point without difficulty. It is argued that the propose algorithm may be both more computationally efficient and more robust compared to the other algorithm when tracing path through severe nonlinearities such as those associated with structural collapse. Two frames are analyzed using the proposed algorithm and the results are compared with the previous methods. The ability of the proposed method, particularly for tracing the limit points, is demonstrated by those numerical examples.

  • Plane steel portal frames, with pitched roof, exposed to fire, are examined. First, a determinate frame is analysed by hand. For flexible columns and shallow roof, snap-through occurs before plastic hinges mechanism is formed. An indeterminate frame with shorter columns and taller roof is also analysed by hand. Then, the same frame is simulated by a truss and a nonlinear static analysis is performed by use of a short computer program. The results of computer analysis by use of truss model are compared with those of analysis by hand and a satisfactory approximation between them is observed.

  • The aim of this paper is to analyze the nonlinear bending of functionally graded (FG) curved nanobeams reinforced by carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in thermal environment. Chen-Yao's surface elastic theory and geometric nonlinearity are also considered. The nanobeams are subjected to uniform loadings and placed on three-parameter substrates. The Euler-Lagrange equations are employed to deduce the equations of equilibrium. Then, the asymptotic solutions and boundary value problems are analytically determined by utilizing the two-step perturbation technique. Finally, the effects of the surface parameters, geometric factors, foundation stiffness, volume fraction, thermal effects and layout type of CNTs on the nonlinear bending of the nanobeams are discussed.
