As generative adversarial network (GAN) based oversampling techniques have achieved impressive results in class imbalance of unstructured dataset such as image, many studies have begun to apply it to solving the problem of imbalance in structured dataset. However, these studies have failed to reflect the characteristics of structured data due to changing the data structure into an unstructured data format. In order to overcome the limitation, this study adapted CycleGAN to reflect the characteristics of structured data, and proposed hybridization of synthetic minority oversampling technique (SMOTE) and the adapted CycleGAN. In particular, this study tried to overcome the limitations of existing studies by using a one-dimensional convolutional neural network unlike previous studies that used two-dimensional convolutional neural network. Oversampling based on the method proposed have been experimented using various datasets and compared the performance of the method with existing oversampling methods such as SMOTE and adaptive synthetic sampling (ADASYN). The results indicated the proposed hybrid oversampling method showed superior performance compared to the existing methods when data have more dimensions or higher degree of imbalance. This study implied that the classification performance of oversampling structured data can be improved using the proposed hybrid oversampling method that considers the characteristic of structured data.
Proactive assessment of landslide susceptibility is necessary for minimizing casualties. This study proposes a methodology for classifying the landslide safety factor using a classification algorithm based on machine learning techniques. The high-risk area model is adopted to perform the classification and eight geotechnical parameters are adopted as inputs. Four classification algorithms-namely decision tree, k-nearest neighbor, logistic regression, and random forest-are employed for comparing classification accuracy for the safety factors ranging between 1.2 and 2.0. Notably, a high accuracy is demonstrated in the safety factor range of 1.2~1.7, but a relatively low accuracy is obtained in the range of 1.8~2.0. To overcome this issue, the synthetic minority over-sampling technique (SMOTE) is adopted to generate additional data. The application of SMOTE improves the average accuracy by ~250% in the safety factor range of 1.8~2.0. The results demonstrate that SMOTE algorithm improves the accuracy of classification algorithms when applied to geotechnical data.
This study aims to identify good borrowers within the context of P2P lending. P2P lending is a growing platform that allows individuals to lend and borrow money from each other. Inherent in any loans is credit risk of borrowers and needs to be considered before any lending. Specifically in the context of P2P lending, traditional models fall short and thus this study aimed to rectify this as well as explore the problem of class imbalances seen within credit risk data sets. This study implemented an over-sampling technique known as Synthetic Minority Over-sampling Technique (SMOTE). To test our approach, we implemented five benchmarking classifiers such as support vector machines, logistic regression, k-nearest neighbor, random forest, and deep neural network. The data sample used was retrieved from the publicly available LendingClub dataset. The proposed SMOTE revealed significantly improved results in comparison with the benchmarking classifiers. These results should help actors engaged within P2P lending to make better informed decisions when selecting potential borrowers eliminating the higher risks present in P2P lending.

Class distribution of unbalanced data is an important part of the digital world and is a significant part of cybersecurity. Abnormal activity of unbalanced data should be found and problems solved. Although a system capable of tracking patterns in all transactions is needed, machine learning with disproportionate data, which typically has abnormal patterns, can ignore and degrade performance for minority layers, and predictive models can be inaccurately biased. In this paper, we predict target variables and improve accuracy by combining estimates using Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique (SMOTE) and Light GBM algorithms as an approach to address unbalanced datasets. Experimental results were compared with logistic regression, decision tree, KNN, Random Forest, and XGBoost algorithms. The performance was similar in accuracy and reproduction rate, but in precision, two algorithms performed at Random Forest 80.76% and Light GBM 97.16%, and in F1-score, Random Forest 84.67% and Light GBM 91.96%. As a result of this experiment, it was confirmed that Light GBM's performance was similar without deviation or improved by up to 16% compared to five algorithms.
There are many studies related to imbalanced data in which the class distribution is highly skewed. To address the problem of imbalanced data, previous studies deal with resampling techniques which correct the skewness of the class distribution in each sampled subset by using under-sampling, over-sampling or hybrid-sampling such as SMOTE. Ensemble methods have also alleviated the problem of class imbalanced data. In this paper, we compare around a dozen algorithms that combine the ensemble methods and resampling techniques based on simulated data sets generated by the Backbone model, which can handle the imbalance rate. The results on various real imbalanced data sets are also presented to compare the effectiveness of algorithms. As a result, we highly recommend the resampling technique combining ensemble methods for imbalanced data in which the proportion of the minority class is less than 10%. We also find that each ensemble method has a well-matched sampling technique. The algorithms which combine bagging or random forest ensembles with random undersampling tend to perform well; however, the boosting ensemble appears to perform better with over-sampling. All ensemble methods combined with SMOTE outperform in most situations.
In this study, a new empirical formula for 2D transverse dispersion coefficient was developed using the results of previous tracer test studies, and the performance of the formula was evaluated. Since many tracer test studies have been conducted under the conditions where the width-to-depth ratio is less than 50, the existing empirical formulas developed using these imbalanced tracer test results have limitations in applying to rivers with a width-to-depth ratio greater than 50. Therefore, in order to develop an empirical formula for transverse dispersion coefficient using the imbalanced tracer test data, the Synthetic Minority Oversampling TEchnique (SMOTE) was used to oversample new data representing the properties of the existing tracer test data. The hydraulic data and the transverse dispersion coefficients in conditions of width-to-depth ratio greater than 50 were oversampled using the SMOTE. The reliability of the oversampled data was evaluated using the ROC (Receiver Operating Characteristic) curve. The empirical formula of transverse dispersion coefficient was developed including the oversampled data, and the performance of the results were compared with the empirical formulas suggested in previous studies using R2. From the comparison results, the value of R2 was 0.81 for the range of W/H < 50 and 0.92 for 50 < W/H, which were improved accuracy compared to the previous studies.

Various imbalanced binary classification problems exist such as fraud detection in banking operations, detecting spam mail and predicting defective products. Several sampling methods such as over sampling, under sampling, SMOTE have been developed to overcome the poor prediction performance of binary classifiers when the proportion of one group is dominant. In order to overcome this problem, several sampling methods such as over-sampling, under-sampling, SMOTE have been developed. In this study, we investigate prediction performance of logistic regression, Lasso, random forest, boosting and support vector machine in combination with the sampling methods for binary imbalanced data. Four real data sets are analyzed to see if there is a substantial improvement in prediction performance. We also emphasize some precautions when the sampling methods are implemented.
