  • This paper attempts to explore the impact of technological regulation on technological innovation and performance of Small and Medium Enterprises(SMEs) by analysing a survey data of 286 Korean SMEs. The 3-step mediated regression analysis results reveal that the perceived regulatory burden is negatively associated with SMEs' R&D investment and innovation of product and process. Moreover, the level of regulatory burden may affect the objective and subjective performance of SMEs. The results suggest that regulatory policies for reducing regulatory burden need to be designed and implemented in order to enhance technological innovation and performance of SMEs.

  • This study analyzed the effects of corporate dynamic capabilities on enterprise performance by using ambidextrous innovation activities as mediators, focusing on SME employees. The sub-variables of dynamic capabilities were divided into opportunity exploration capability, resource acquisition capability, and resource reconstruction capability. 282 questionnaires collected from small and medium-sized enterprises residing in the metropolitan area were used for empirical analysis. SPSS v22.0 and Process macro v3.4 were used to analyze the parallel multiple mediation model. First, the results of the analysis showed that opportunity exploration capability, resource acquisition capability had a positive (+) effect on the ambidextrous innovation activities, and the effect of resource reconstruction capability on ambidextrous innovation activities was not significant. Second, the ambidextrous innovation activities had a significant effect on the enterprise performance. Third, it was found that opportunity exploration capability and resource acquisition capability had a positive (+) effect on enterprise performance, and the effect of resource reconstruction capability on enterprise performance was not significant. Fourth, the ambidextrous innovation activity mediated the relationship between opportunity exploration capability and enterprise performance. Fifth, the ambidextrous innovation activity mediated the relationship between resource acquisition capability and enterprise performance. Sixth, the ambidextrous innovation activity did not mediate the resource reconstruction capability and the enterprise performance. As a follow-up study, it is necessary to find third mediators besides the mediators used in this study, analyze the serial mediation model through these, and study for the moderated mediation analysis through the conditional process model in which the moderator is introduced.

  • This study verified how R&D investment affects the management performance of SMEs, whether technology innovation mediates this relationship, and whether marketing competency moderates the relationship between technology innovation and management performance. A longitudinal analysis was conducted using data from the corporate panel survey performed by Daegu Technopark every year since 2013. Data from 349 companies in the Daegu-Gyeongbuk region were mainly used, and the size of 30 to 50 employees in the manufacturing industry was a major analysis target company. The results are as below. First, The results showed that R&D investment had a positive effect on management as well as technology innovation, but technology innovation did not affect management performance. Also, technological innovation did not mediate the relationship between R&D investment and management performance. This shows that in the case of small SMEs, even if technological innovation occurs through R&D investment, the technological innovation does not lead to management performance. Also, the relationship between technological innovation and management performance was not changed by marketing capabilities. This shows that technological innovation in small SMEs is not easy to lead to business performance.

  • Korea is far behind other OECD countries in economy-wise productivity: Korea's labor productivity in terms of GDP per hour worked is the lowest among OECD countries. Against the existing productivity gap, there is a worrying sign in Korea's investment trend - rapid fall in machinery and equipment investment with slow increase in R&D investment. The challenge facing Korea is how to transform her economy from catching-up model to a knowledge-based one. The paper shows that, in tandem with the structural changes that today's Korean industries are experiencing, industry's innovation system is also changing. Innovation networks are emerging as the result of economy-wise restructuring since the financial crisis of 1997 and, though still not a dominant force, the newly emerging innovation networks will be the main threads of industry's innovation activities in the future. The changes in industrial innovation system would positively contribute in raising the productivity of the Korean economy. The paper contains a case study on Korea's automobile industry in order to highlight some of main characteristics of the structural changes, in addition to a chapter that gives an overview of the evolutionary paths of the Korea's industrial innovation. The paper assesses that changes can be considered as a positive sign of future growth perspective; but there are further challenges to make the Korea's industrial innovation system effective. The list of such challenges includes strengthening upstream sectors of currently leading industries, expanding the innovation base to SME and promoting technological co-operation between domestic firms and foreign firms.

  • In the case of SMEs, entrepreneurship that organizes only core functions with the minimum number of people is increasing, and a responsibility management system focusing on core functions is emphasized, so that the interest in innovation behavior and survival strategy of enterprises is getting bigger. However, in the case of SMEs, it is not easy to pursue continuous innovation due to lack of capital and lack of professional manpower. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of SME on innovation behavior by selecting exploratory study and literature study for SMEs. The data for this study were 545 out of the total 600 copies distributed to employees in SMEs. The data were analyzed using SPSS 21.0 and amos18.0. First, product diversification, strategy formulation, and R & D have a significant effect on innovation behavior, and market diversification has no effect on innovation behavior. Second, working variables such as product diversification, market diversification, strategy formulation, and R & D do not control the influence of innovative behavior on innovation behavior. Third, the rank variable, which is the controlling variable, controls the magnitude of the effect of product diversification, market diversification, strategy formulation, and R & D on innovation behavior. As a result, corporate managers should lead the organization in order to promote product diversification, market diversification strategy, R & D and innovation activities. After discussing the conclusions and implications of this study, this study presented the direction of the research for the follow-up study.

  • The techno-park built-up project of Korea had begun in order to support regional enterprises since 1997. The number of techno-parks increased from 6 in 1997 to 17 in 2009 with various enterprise supporting services such as a new enterprise breeding, pilot production, and education and training. By way of renewing regional innovation promoting system, revising technopark law, and starting second step techno-park project, techno-parks have become centers for regional technology innovation, and cultivation of regional technology-based companies. Alternative policies for the development of techno-park projects are as follows: revitalizing the network among enterprises, universities, research institutes, and government; strengthening the ability to draw up projects in nurturing regional industry; and the establishment of fixed channels to support SME in the region.

  • The purpose of the this study is to analyze what business value orientations are more effective on the enhancement of productivity and performance indexes of IT companies. Especially we are interest in the moderate effect of business types such as IT manufacturing, IT services, and non-IT manufacturing companies. The empirical test results was somehow different from the theoretical researches. Customer orientation affects productivity directly and performance indexes indirectly. Whereas, technology innovation orientation didn't affects productivity and performance indexes directly, except IT services companies. Corporate social responsibility affects performance indexes directly, but not productivity. We could conclude that the type of business is an important moderator between business value orientations and enterprise performance factors.
