  • In sensor medium access control (SMAC) protocol, sensor nodes can only access the channel in the scheduling and listening period. However, this fixed working method may generate data latency and high conflict. To solve those problems, scheduling duty in the original SMAC protocol is divided into multiple small scheduling duties (micro duty MD). By applying different micro-dispersed contention channel, sensor nodes can reduce the collision probability of the data and thereby save energy. Based on the given micro-duty, this paper presents an adaptive duty cycle (DC) and back-off algorithm, aiming at detecting the fixed duty cycle in SMAC protocol. According to the given buffer queue length, sensor nodes dynamically change the duty cycle. In the context of low duty cycle and low flow, fair binary exponential back-off (F-BEB) algorithm is applied to reduce data latency. In the context of high duty cycle and high flow, capture avoidance binary exponential back-off (CA-BEB) algorithm is used to further reduce the conflict probability for saving energy consumption. Based on the above two contexts, we propose an improved SMAC protocol, micro duty adaptive SMAC protocol (MDA-SMAC). Comparing the performance between MDA-SMAC protocol and SMAC protocol on the NS-2 simulation platform, the results show that, MDA-SMAC protocol performs better in terms of energy consumption, latency and effective throughput than SMAC protocol, especially in the condition of more crowded network traffic and more sensor nodes.

  • Environmental monitoring applications measure temporature, humidity, and pollution degrees of large areas periodically and are essential for ubiquitous society. In this paper, we propose a sensor network MAC protocol that is applicable to environmental monitoring applications. The proposing MAC protocol has scalability by constructing multiple groups of sensor nodes as in SMAC protocol. Differently from SMAC protocol, however, ours have hierarchical structure between adjacent groups. Data transmission schedules are efficient since lower groups are synchronized to higher groups. Thus. the end-to-end delays and energy consumption can be reduced due to sequential transmission schedules. But since the nodes within the same group are synchronized to themselves. they have good adaptability and scalability compared to existing hierarchical approaches such as DMAC. We show by simulations that the proposing MAC protocol is superior to SMAC for environmental monitoring applications.

  • In this paper, we propose an energy-efficient MAC(Medium Access Control) protocol for processing context information in ubiquitous sensor network environments. CASMAC(Context Aware Sensor MAC) use context information for energy-efficient operation and its operation principle is as follows. First, we make scenarios with possible prediction for CASMAC. And then we save setted context information in server. When event occur at specific sensor node, and then it send three times sample data to server. According to context information, server process sample data. If server process sample data with event, it receive continuous data from event occur node by a transmission request signal. And then server send data transmission stop signal to event occur node when it do not need to data. If server process sample data with no event, it have not reply. Through we make energy consumption tables and an energy consumption model, we simulate analysis of CASMAC performance. In a result, we gains about 5.7 percents energy reduction compared to SMAC.

  • With the advance of computer and communication technologies, wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are increasingly used in many aspects of our daily life. However, since the battery lifetime of WSN nodes is restricted, the WSN lifetime is also limited. Therefore, it is crucial to determine this limited lifetime in advance for preventing service interruptions in critical applications. This paper proposes a feasible static analysis approach to estimating the worstcase lifetime of a WSN. Assuming known routes with a given sensor network topology and SMAC as the underlying MAC protocol, we statically estimate the lifetime of each sensor node with a fixed initial energy budget. These estimations are then compared with the results obtained through simulation which run with the same energy budget on each node. Experimental results of our research on TinyOS applications indicate that our approach can safely and accurately estimate worst-case lifetime of the WSN. To the best of our knowledge, our work is the first one to estimate the worst-case lifetime of WSNs through a static analysis method.

  • Wireless sensor consists of an internal power source which has limited life time. Several MAC protocols have exploited scheduled sleep/listen cycles to conserve energy in sensor networks. Duty cycle is a user-adjustable parameter in low duty cycle MAC protocols, which determines the length of the sleep period in a frame. The sire of duty cycle has direct effect on the Performance of MAC Protocols. In this Paper, we simulated TEEM (A Traffic Aware, Energy Efficient MAC) and S-MAC in NS-2 with different duty cycle values and analyze how duty-cycle effects on the performance and energy consumption of both the protocols.
