Morphological Study on the Leaf Nectar Glands of Some Prunus Species in Korea (한국산(韓國産) Prunus속(屬) 수(數) 종(種)의 엽밀선(葉蜜腺)의 형태(形態)에 관한 연구(硏究))

  • Morphological characters on the leaf nectar gland of Korean Prunus 4 species and 1 form were observed by SM. The results were summarized as follows ; The shapes of nectar gland on the plane figure were two, the circular and the irregular ovate. The species of circular shape were P. maackii, P. maximowiczii, P. sargentii and P. yedoensis. The irregular ovate shape was only one species, P. pendula for. ascendens. The shapes of nectar gland on the side figure were the reentrant apices and the rounded. The reentrant apices were two shapes. First, the species of the center reentrant was three, P. maackii, P. sargentii and P. yedoensis. Second, the species of the irregular reentrant was P. pendula for. ascendens. The rounded apex was only one species, P. maximowiczii. Especially on the P. pendula for. ascendens, the upheaval situation on surface of leaf blade was due to the sinking of reverse part of leaf blade at the nectar gland. The point of this abnormal shape was well distinguished from the other species. On the frequency by the part of leaf with nectar gland, the species to be observed only at the leaf base was P. pendula for. ascendens, the other species was observed two part of leaf base and petioles. In this study, some Prunus species were well keyed out on the basis of the morphological characters of leaf nectar gland.

Quality Changes in Peeled Lotus Roots Immersed in Electrolyzed Water Prior to Wrap- and Vacuum-Packaging (전기분해수 침지처리 박피연근의 랩 및 진공포장 저장 중의 품질변화)

  • This study investigated changes in quality characteristics of wrap- and vacuum-packaged peeled lotus roots treated with strong acidic electrolyzed acid water (SAEW pH 2.58, ORP 1,128 mV, HClO 105.0 ppm) or low alkaline electrolyzed water (LAEW pH 8.56, ORP 660 mV, HClO 73.8 ppm) as immersion liquids prior to packaging and storage at 5C. Immersion of peeled lotus roots in SAEW and LAEW reduced initial microbial load by about 1 log compared to treatment with tap water (TW). Hardness differences on storage were observed. However, reduction in PPO activity by electrolyzed water was not reproducible. Changes in Hunter's color value and the color difference value ($\Delta$) of peeled lotus roots immersed in 0.5% (w/v) sodium metabisulfite (SMS) and electrolyzed water were smaller than those of roots treated with TW prior to storage. Sensory characteristics measured during storage were best-preserved in lotus roots previously immersed in 0.5% (w/v) SMS or electrolyzed water, compared to TW. Immersionin electrolyzed water and vacuum packaging preserves the quality of peeled lotus roots in terms of microbial, visual, and sensory aspects, at levels comparable to those offered by storage after treatment with 0.5% (w/v) SMS.

Quality Characteristics of the Hasuo (Polygoni multiflori Radix) Muffin Prepared with Different Types of Sweeteners (하수오 머핀 제조시 당 종류가 품질에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a functional hasuo (Polygoni Multiflori Radix) muffin prepared via the replacement of sucrose (SM) with oligosaccharide (fructooligosaccharide, isomaltooligosaccharide, galactooligosaccharide). The fructooligosaccharide-added hasuo muffin showed the highest weight while the volume and specific volume were lower in the oligosaccharide-added group than in the sucrose-added sample. The pH of the sucrose-added sample was higher than that of the oligosaccharide-added sample. The lowest lightness value was found in the sucrose-added sample, but the highest redness and yellowness values were found in the sucrose-added sample. The springiness and cohesiveness were highest in the fructooligosaccharide-added sample. The DPPH-radical-scavenging activity of the hasuo muffin including sucrose was 38.67, while that including the oligosaccharide group ranged from 42.87 to 65.95. In the sensory evaluation of the hasuo muffin, the fructooligosaccharide-added sample obtained the highest score in after-swallow, flavor, taste, and texture. The hasuo muffin with fructooligosaccharide and isomaltooligosaccharide obtained high scores in overall acceptability. These results suggest that hasuo muffin with fructooligosaccharide and isomaltooligosaccharide have the potential to become commercially successful muffins.

Feasibility Study of Different Biochars as Adsorbent for Cadmium and Lead

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of different biochars on the removal of heavy metals from aqueous media. The experiment was carried out in aqueous solutions containing $200mg\;CdL^{-1}$ or $200mg\;PbL^{-1}$ using two different biochars derived from soybean stover and orange peel (20 mg Cd or $Pbg^{-1}$ biochar). After shaking for 24 hours, biochars were filtered out, and Cd and Pb in the filtrate were analyzed by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometer (FAAS). In order to provide information regarding metal binding strength on biochars, sequential extraction was performed by modified SM&T (formerly BCR). The results showed that 70~100% of initially added Cd and Pb was adsorbed on biochars and removed from aqueous solution. The removal rate of Pb (95%, 100%) was higher than that of Cd (70%, 91%). In the case of Cd, orange peel derived biochar (91%) showed higher adsorption rate than soybean stover derived biochar (70%). Cd was adsorbed on the biochar mainly in exchangeable and carbonates fraction (1st phase). In contrast, Pb was adsorbed on it mainly in the form of Fe-Mn oxides and residual fraction (2nd and 4th phase). The existence of Cd and Pb as a form of surface-precipitated complex was also observed on the surfaces of biochars detected by field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDAX).

Differences in Social Maturity and Behavioral Problems According to the Level of Sleep Problems in Infants With Autism Spectrum Disorder (자폐스펙트럼장애 영유아의 수면문제 경계선 및 임상 수준 집단과 정상 수준 집단 간 사회성숙도와 문제행동의 차이)

  • Objective : The purpose of this study was to examine differences in social maturity and behavioral problems according to the level of sleep problems in children with ASD. Methods : The participants were 102 mothers of infants with ASD aged 1-5 years. The Social Maturity Scales (SMS) and Child Behavior Checklist 1.5-5 were used as the measuring tools. Results : The level of sleep problems in infants with ASD was 56.58T on the sleep problems scale. The participants were grouped based on scores on the sleep problems scale: those with scores <65 (good sleepers) or scores ≥65 (poor sleepers). Sleep problems significantly correlated with all the scales on the CBCL. However, no association was found between sleep problems and social quotients. Poor sleepers achieved significantly lower scores on the social quotient scale of the SMS than good sleepers. Poor sleepers achieved significantly higher scores in internalizing problems, externalizing problems, and DSM-oriented scales on the CBCL compared to those in the good sleepers. Conclusion : The significance of this study is that it has verified the severity of sleep problems in infants with ASD and has examined the differences in social maturity and behavioral problems between poor sleepers and good sleepers.

Therapeutic Antiallergy Effect of Fermented Soy Curd by Pediococcus inopinatus Y2 (항알레르기에 대한 Pediococcus inopinatus Y2 유산균 발효 두유 커드의 치료 효과)

  • The use of fermented soy curd as a functional substance has been actively studied due to the anti-inflammatory and antiallergic activity of soybean protein hydrolyzate by enzymes of lactic acid bacteria. The present study investigated the potential of soy curd as a treatment for atopic dermatitis (AD). Pediococcus inopinatus Y2 (P. inopinatus Y2) lactic acid bacteria were inoculated into soy milk and fermented ($30^{\circ}C$, 24 hr). Changes in body weights, ear thicknesses, IgE concentrations, and weights of immune organs in ICR female mice were quantified. Moderate weight gain occurred in most of the groups. The ear thickness was lowest in the untreated group (no group), and it was allergic and thickened in the phthalic anhydride (PA) treatment group. Based on visual observations, as compared with the skin condition of the PA-induced AD group, the skin condition of the animals in the fermented soy curd (FSC) group was improved. Therefore, FSC by lactic acid bacteria seemed to improve AD. Based on the comparison of the weights of the spleen, thymus, and lymph nodes, as well as the results of the IgE analysis, soy milk, in addition to FSC, had a therapeutic effect. However, the antiallergy effects of FSC in terms of AD were far superior to those of soy milk. These results indicated that FSC can be used as a treatment for AD.

Colorimetric Analysis of Preformed Zirconia Anterior Crowns for Esthetic Restoration (심미수복용 기성 지르코니아 크라운의 색조 평가)

  • The purpose of this study was to identify which combination of zirconia crowns and cements is most similar in color to the maxillary primary incisors by varying the color of zirconia crowns, crown thickness, and shade of cements. Prefabricated zirconia crowns in 3 shades and crowns fabricated using 6 types of zirconia blocks were used in this study. These were filled with A2-shade or translucent-shade resin cement and the $L^*$, $a^*$, and $b^*$ values were calculated using a spectrophotometer. The color differences between the natural teeth and the zirconia crowns were assessed. The shade of the final restoration was more similar to that of the natural teeth using A2-shade than translucent-shade resin cement. Application of A2-shade cement to a 0.5-mm-thick crown fabricated from a smile series 2 zirconia block resulted in the color most similar to that of the natural teeth. A2-shade resin cement is recommended for zirconia crown restoration in anterior primary teeth compared to TR-shade resin cement for more esthetic restoration. Since restorations with Nu-smile zirconia crowns were not esthetically favorable in terms of shade, improvement of the shade characteristics of the product or development of a new kind of zirconia crown is required.

The study of seed morphological trait and testa characteristic for Korean Vicia species

  • In order to evaluate the taxonomical relevance of seeds morphological characteristics, a macroand micro-morphological study was conducted on seeds of Korean Vicia (Fabacea). We collected 19 taxa of genus Vicia distributed in Korea and introduced one taxa from USDA. The morphological characteristic and testa texture of seeds were investigated using a Stereo-microscope (SM) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Most of Vicia seeds were found spherical or oblong and some seeds were oval and subglose. The largest seed was V. chosenensis ($4.3{\times}3.6{\times}2.6mm$), and the smallest was V. teterasperma ($1.7{\times}1.7{\times}1.5mm$). V. chosenensis and V. hirsuta were separated from other Vicia species by having a shiny in seed finish. In hilum shape, 14 species have linear and V. sepium was distinguished by having a circumlinear. In testa texture, they developed papilae, only V. hirsuta has lophate in level type. Deposition of the sheet-like debris between the papilae was observed in V. chosenensis, V. cracca, and V. unijuga. Polymorphism information content (PIC) values of the 13 qualitative morphological characters (QMC) were in the range of 0.0950 to 8863 with an average of 0.4611. PIC value of seed shape, seed colour, hilum colour were 0.7403, 0.8177, 0.883 respectively. Cluster analysis based on QMC detected three main clades. V. cracca, V. amurensis, V. amoena were involved in Group 1 and V. unijuga f. minor, V. unijuga, V. unijuga f. angustifolia, V. sepium, V. hirticalycina, V. hirsuta, V. linearfolia, V. chosenensis, V. pseudorobus, V. venosa var. cuspidata were involved in Group 2. V. nipponica, V. japonica, V. villosa, V. dasicarpa, V. bungei, V. angustifolia, V. tetrasperma were clustered in Group 3. Our research suggests that morphological characteristic and testa texture of seeds could be used as definers for the identification of genus Vicia.

Reliability and Validity of the Korean Version of Children Participation Questionnaire (한글판 Children Participation Questionnaire(K-CPQ)의 신뢰도 및 타당도 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the reliability and validity of the K-CPQ in 299 children with developmental disorder and non-disabled children to prove their level of participation in Korean children with developmental disabilities. In order to verify the reliability of the K-CPQ, Cronbach ${\alpha}$ was calculated and Pearson correlation analysis was used for test-retest reliability test. As a result, the internal consistency(${\alpha}=.81{\sim}.90$) in each area of K-CPQ was relatively high and the Pearson correlation coefficient (r=.807~.843) in the test-retest reliability test was significant in all areas(p<.01). It showed statistically significant difference in all areas(t=2.32~5.18) in comparison with the non-disabled children group in order to verify the discriminant validity of K-CPQ. For the criterion-related validity of the K-CPQ, Pearson correlation analysis of K-SMS and K-SFA shows statistically significant static correlation(r=.817, r=743) showed(p<.01). Through this study, K-CPQ has been confirmed as a reliable and reasonable assessment tool and we expect that diverse research by K-CPQ will provide appropriate interventions for children with disabilities.

Yield characteristics of Pleurotus ostreatus according to the use of spent mushroom substrate with high nitrogen content (질소원이 증진된 수확후배지를 이용한 느타리버섯 수량 특성)

  • The aim of this study was to re-use spent mushroom substrate (SMS) with increased total nitrogen (T-N) and amino acid content and reduce the amount of cottonseed meal used as nutrient supplement in Pleurotus ostreatus cultivation. Bacteria used for improvement of the T-N content were GM20-4(Bacillus sp.) and Rhodobacter sphaeroides (RS). GM20-4 was isolated from the SMS of P. ostreatus and RS was obtained from Gwangjusi agricultural technology center. SMS in T1, T2, and T3 was reused as substrate after drying and the T-N content of dried SMS (D-SMS) was increased by 0.34% by treatment with the bacteria. T1 with 8% D-SMS and T2 with 18% D-SMS had higher rates of primordia formation compared with T3 and the control. The biological efficiency of the control and of treatment with 8%, 18%, and 26% D-SMS was 110%, 114%, 112%, and 79%, respectively. Considering the economic cost, yield, and biological efficiency, T2 with 18% D-SMS as the culture substrate for P. ostreatus was shown to be the most effective for cultivation.
