Alkali-silica reaction (ASR) is a chemical reaction in concrete that alkalis in cement react with reactive silica in aggregate in the presence of water. When ASR takes place, it produces gels that absorb water and expand. Swelling of ASR gels can damage concrete and cause cracking and volume expansion in concrete structure. In this paper, mechanical consequences of ASR on concrete are simulated by a finite element (FE) analysis. An FE model of concrete is built. The evolution of concrete mechanical properties subjected to ASR is achieved by FE analyses. The constitutive model of concrete is attained via the FE analysis. A case study is used to demonstrate the proposed method. The simulated results using the proposed model are in good agreement with the observations of concrete with ASR reported in the literature. The results can be used for a basic research to enhance durability of concrete slab tracks and concrete railway sleepers.
In the current study, we present a new model for predicting width spread of a slab with a dog-bone shaped cross section during rolling in the roughing train of a hot strip mill. The approach is based on the extremum principle for a rigid plastic material and a three dimensional admissible velocity field. The upper bound theorem is used for calculating the width spread of the slab. The prediction accuracy of the proposed model is examined through comparison with the predictions from 3-D finite element (FE) process simulations.

A finite element-based, integrated process model is presented for a three dimensional, coupled analysis of the thermal and mechanical behavior of type 304 stainless slab during hot charge rolling (HCR) and cold charge rolling (CCR) processes. The validity of the proposed model is examined through comparison with measurements. The susceptibility on micro-crack initiation or propagation due to the thermal stress in these two different process conditions was examined. The model's capability of revealing the effect of diverse process parameters is demonstrated through a series of process simulation.

This study deals with cracking control of concrete deck in steel-concrete composite bridges according to the concrete slab casting sequences. In correlation studies between casting sequences, time dependent effects of concrete creep and shrinkage are implemented in the analytical model. Finally, the methods of cracking control in terms of concrete slump and relative humidity are suggested to prevent early transverse cracking of concrete slab.

In general, a reinforced concrete slabs are known to have a high fire resistance performance due to thermal properties of concrete materials. However, according to previous research, the thermal behavior of voided slabs is reported to be different from that of conventional RC solid slabs, and the differences seem to be caused by the air layer formed inside the voided slab. Therefore, it is difficult to estimate the temperature distribution of the voided slab under fire by using the existing methods that do not take into account the air layer inside the voided slab. In this study, a numerical analysis model was proposed to estimate the temperature distribution of voided slabs under fire, and evaluated. Heat transfer of slabs under fire is generally caused by conduction, convection and radiation, and time-dependent temperature changes of slab can be determined considering these phenomena. This study proposed a numerical method to estimate the temperature distribution of voided slabs under fire based on a finite difference method in which a cross-section of the slab is divided into a number of layers. This method is also developed to allow consideration of heat transfer through convection and radiation in air layer inside of slabs. In addition, the proposed model was also validated by comparison with the experimental results, and the results showed that the proposed model appropriately predicts the temperature distribution of voided slabs under fire.

PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to investigate the optimal joint positions which can minimize distresses of concrete pavement containing box culvert with horizontally skewed angles. METHODS : The concrete pavement containing the box culvert with different skewed angles and soil cover depths was modeled by 3 dimensional finite element method. The contact boundary condition was used between concrete and soil structures in addition to the nonlinear material property of soil in the finite element model. A dynamic analysis was performed by applying the self weight of pavement, negative temperature gradient of slab, and moving vehicle load simultaneously. RESULTS : In case of zero skewed angle ($0^{\circ}$), the maximum tensile stress of slab was the lowest when the joint was positioned directly over side of box culvert. In case there was a skewed angle, the maximum tensile stress of slab was the lowest when the joint passed the intersection between side of the box culvert and longitudinal centerline of slab. The magnitude of the maximum tensile stress converged to a constant value regardless the joint position from 3m of soil cover depth at all of the horizontally skewed angles. CONCLUSIONS : More reasonable and accurate design of the concrete pavement containing the box culvert can be possible based on the research results.
We analyzed the behavior of the lining segments considering the middle slab and lateral pressure coefficients when planning the construction of a duplex tunnel for the underground network. Reviewed segment lining analysis for research, the analytical model was determined for duplex tunnel. Also reviewed the vertical load, and a load of middle slab is considered the static load and the live load by vehicles. Section force by middle slabs a load applied was mainly generated in the lower tunnel had the greatest effect on the bending moment. In addition, the bending moment acting direction changes appeared with a large variable, and the section force according to the load applied to the middle slab is relatively constant and the effect on the segment lining from the smallest section force of the lateral pressure coefficient of 1.00 was found to occur appears most significantly. As a result of this research to identify the behavior of the slab and the segment lining by the effect of the lateral pressure coefficient (K) of the duplex tunnel will be able to present a method of the duplex tunnel structure is reasonable and economical design.
We consider linear regression models in high-dimensional settings (p ≫ n) and compare various classes of priors. The spike and slab prior is one of the most widely used priors for Bayesian regression models, but its model space is vast, resulting in a bad performance in finite samples. As an alternative, various continuous shrinkage priors, including the horseshoe prior and its variants, have been proposed. Although each of the above priors has been investigated separately, exhaustive comparative studies of their performance have been conducted very rarely. In this study, we compare the spike and slab prior, the horseshoe prior and its variants in various simulation settings. The performance of each method is demonstrated in terms of the regression coefficient estimation and variable selection. Finally, some remarks and suggestions are given based on comprehensive simulation studies.

This paper presents a feasibility study of a fresh air load reduction system by using an underground double floor space. The fresh air is introduced into the double slab space and passes through the opening bored into the footing beam. The air is cooled by the heat exchange with the inside surface of the double slab space in summer, and heated in winter. This system not only reduces sensible heat load of the fresh air by heat exchange with earth but also reduces latent heat load of the fresh air by ad/de-sorption of underground double slab concrete. In this paper, we used a model for evaluation of fresh air latent heat load reduction by hygroscopic of air to earth exchange system taking into account coupled heat and moisture transfer of underground double floor space. In conclusion it shows the validity of the proposed method for a design tool and the quantitative effect of the system.

Flat-slabs, being a significant structural component, not only reduce the dead load of the structure but also reduce the amount of concrete required for construction. Moreover the use of recycled aggregates lowers the impact of large scale construction to nearby ecosystems. Recycled aggregate based concrete being a quasi-brittle material shows enormous cracking during failure. Crack growth in flat-slabs is mostly in sliding mode (Mode II). Therefore sufficient sections need to be provided for resistance against such failure modes. The main objective of the paper is to numerically determine the ultimate load carrying capacity of two self-similar flat-slab specimens and validate the results experimentally for the natural aggregate as well as recycled aggregate based concrete. Punching shear experiments are carried out on circular flat-slab specimen on a rigid circular knife-edge support built out of both normal (NAC) and recycled aggregate concrete (RAC, with full replacement). Uniaxial compression and bending tests have been conducted on cubes, cylinders and prisms using both types of concrete (NAC and RAC) for its material characterization and use in the numerical scheme. The numerical simulations have been conducted in ABAQUS (a known finite element software package). Eight noded solid elements have been used to model the flat slab and material properties have been considered from experimental tests. The inbuilt Concrete Damaged Plasticity model of ABAQUS has been used to monitor crack propagation in the specimen during numerical simulations.
