We investigate Faraday rotation measure (RM) toward high Galactic latitudes due to the Galactic magnetic field (GMF). The Galactic contribution to RM comes from the global component and the turbulent component of the GMF, and we newly model the latter by incorporating data of MHD turbulence simulations. We find that for the turbulent velocity of ~50 km/s, the standard deviation of the RM due to the GMF toward high Galactic latitudes is close to the observed value, several rad m^{-2}. Yet, the predicted second-order structure function (SF) has values substantially smaller than the observed ones at separation angles of <~ several degree. This suggests that the intergalactic magnetic field (IGMF) significantly contributes to RM toward high Galactic latitudes, particularly at small angular scales. Our work proposes a strategy for surveys to explore the IGMF with LOFAR, ASKAP, MeerKAT, and SKA.
이번 연구에서는 1)AMNH(American Museum of Natural History)에서 사용되고 있는 돔영상물의 교육자 매뉴얼들을 사례조사 하였고, 2)사례조사 결과와 2007 개정 과학과 교육과정을 고려하여 돔영상물 Planets(Astronef Production제작, 2010)의 교육자 매뉴얼을 개발 하였다.
We propose a deep learning analysis technique with a convolutional neural network (CNN) to predict the evolutionary track of the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) from the 21-cm differential brightness temperature tomography images. We use 21cmFAST, a fast semi-numerical cosmological 21-cm signal simulator, to produce mock 21-cm maps between z = 6 ~ 13. We then apply two observational effects, such as instrumental noise and limit of (spatial and depth) resolution somewhat suitable for realistic choices of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), into the 21-cm maps. We design our deep learning model with CNN to predict the sliced-averaged neutral hydrogen fraction from the given 21-cm map. The estimated neutral fraction from our CNN model has great agreement with the true value even after coarsely smoothing with broad beam size and frequency bandwidth and heavily covered by noise with narrow beam size and frequency bandwidth. Our results show that the deep learning analyzing method has the potential to reconstruct the EoR history efficiently from the 21-cm tomography surveys in future.
The East Asian Observatory (EAO) was established in 2014 by the East Asian Core Observatories Association (EACOA). The goal of the EAO is to build and operate world-class facilities on behalf of the East Asian regions, as a counterpart to the European Southern Observatory (ESO). Leading astronomical facilities such as ALMA, TMT, GMT, and SKA are mega projects which require enormous economic resources. It is difficult for any observatory or any country to fund such facilities on its own. EAO intends to combine the resources and manpower in our East Asian regions, in order to play a leading role in the next generation frontier instruments. The EACOA institutes: NAOC, NAOJ, KASI, and ASIAA, have authorized the EAO to take on the operations of the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) on Mauna Kea as their first joint venture. In this talk, we will report on the development of EAO, our current operations of JCMT, and our future aspirations.
We develop a novel technique that can constrain the evolutionary track of the epoch of reionization (EoR) by applying the convolutional neural network (CNN) to the 21-cm differential brightness temperature. We use 21cmFAST, a fast semi-numerical cosmological 21-cm signal simulator, to produce mock 21-cm map between z=6-13. We design a CNN architecture that predicts the volume-averaged neutral hydrogen fraction from the given 21-cm map. The estimated neutral fraction has a good agreement with its truth value even after smoothing the 21-cm map with somewhat realistic choices of beam size and the frequency bandwidth of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA). Our technique could be further utilized to denoise the 21-cm map or constrain the properties of the radiation sources.
The last two decades have seen an immense growth in our understanding of the physics of the birth and evolution of our Universe. However there are still many unanswered questions, such as: what is the nature of the dark energy, which drives the acceleration of the expansion of the Universe? Is the acceleration driven by a cosmological constant, some dynamical dark energy, or a modification of the gravitational force law on large scales? The next generation of radio observatories will conduct large area radio continuum and HI intensity mapping surveys, and so will make possible new and complimentary tests of these fundamental questions. In this talk I present the design of these next generation of surveys, current forecasts for the effectiveness of these cosmological probes, and results from precursor experiments.
A novel method to characterize the topology of the early-universe intergalactic medium during the epoch of cosmic reionization is presented. The 21-cm radiation background from high redshift is analyzed through calculation of the 2-dimensional (2D) genus. The radiative transfer of hydrogen-ionizing photons and ionization-rate equations are calculated in a suite of numerical simulations under various input parameters. The 2D genus is calculated from the mock 21-cm images of high-redshift universe. We construct the 2D genus curve by varying the threshold differential brightness temperature, and compare this to the 2D genus curve of the underlying density field. We find that (1) the 2D genus curve reflects the evolutionary track of cosmic reionization and (2) the 2D genus curve can discriminate between certain reionization scenarios and thus indirectly probe the properties of radiation-sources. Choosing the right beam shape of a radio antenna is found crucial for this analysis. Square Kilometer Array (SKA) is found to be a suitable apparatus for this analysis in terms of sensitivity, even though some deterioration of the data for this purpose is unavoidable under the planned size of the antenna core.
We present a newly developed algorithm based on a Bayesian method for 2D tilted-ring analysis of disk galaxies which operates on velocity fields. Compared to the conventional ones based on a chi-squared minimisation procedure, this new Bayesian-based algorithm less suffers from local minima of the model parameters even with high multi-modality of their posterior distributions. Moreover, the Bayesian analysis implemented via Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampling only requires broad ranges of posterior distributions of the parameters, which makes the fitting procedure fully automated. This feature is essential for performing kinematic analysis of an unprecedented number of resolved galaxies from the upcoming Square Kilometre Array (SKA) pathfinders' galaxy surveys. A standalone code, the so-called '2D Bayesian Automated Tilted-ring fitter' (2DBAT) that implements the Bayesian fits of 2D tilted-ring models is developed for deriving rotation curves of galaxies that are at least marginally resolved (> 3 beams across the semi-major axis) and moderately inclined (20 < i < 70 degree). The main layout of 2DBAT and its performance test are discussed using sample galaxies from Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) observations as well as artificial data cubes built based on representative rotation curves of intermediate-mass and massive spiral galaxies.
A growing body of evidence has been supporting the existence of so-called "dark molecular gas" (DMG), which is invisible in the most common tracer of molecular gas, i.e., CO rotational emission. DMG is believed to be the main gas component of the intermediate extinction region from Av~0.05-2, roughly corresponding to the self-shielding threshold of $H_2$ and $^{13}CO$. To quantify DMG relative to $H{\small{I}}$ and CO, we are pursuing three observational techniques; $H{\small{I}}$ self-absorption, OH absorption, and THz $C^+$ emission. In this paper, we focus on preliminary results from a CO and OH absorption survey of DMG candidates. Our analysis shows that the OH excitation temperature is close to that of the Galactic continuum background and that OH is a good DMG tracer co-existing with molecular hydrogen in regions without CO. Through systematic "absorption mapping" by the Square Kilometer Array (SKA) and ALMA, we will have unprecedented, comprehensive knowledge of the ISM components including DMG in terms of their temperature and density, which will impact our understanding of galaxy evolution and star formation profoundly.
