  • In recently, the Korea government is concerning on non-point source pollution management to improve water quality. The objective of this paper is to investigate the improvement measurement for management of livestock wastes. As a result, we find that the National Pollution Source Survey is necessary to establish the unified database system with the Korea Statistics(KOSAT) in order to minimize the difference between relevant data. The investigation for environmental impact of livestock manure should be supported the designation of control areas and establishment of the technical guidelines including target material, monitoring site, standard method, etc. In addition, it should be followed by appropriate nutrient recycling and proper fertilizer usage based on social consultation and cost-benefit analysis.

  • Coal ash, which is generated as a byproduct at a coal thermal power plant, can be classified into fly ash and bottom ash. Most of fly ash is recycled as an admixture for concrete, while bottom ash is not recycled but dumped into an ash landfill disposal site. So, if a technology for recycling bottom ash efficiently, which is increasingly generated year by year, is not developed, environmental problems will take place as a matter course and further an enormous economical cost will be required for construction of additional ash landfill disposal sites. In this study an optimum mix proportion design and a quality control method for utilizing the reclamation coal ash as an aggregate for secondary concrete products such as an artificial reef was successfully developed.

  • An organic agriculture should be managed by mixed farming in farm unit as a closed recycling system. Due to restricted purchased of fertilizers from outside, organic farmer has to deal with limited amount of nutrient source in farm unit. Especially the supply of the essential nutrient, nitrogen, mostly depends on legumes fixing nitrogen optimizing the site-adapted crop rotation. Dynamics of humus and metabolic plant carbon and active soil carbon compartment in active and passive humuspool by rotation system was explained, and dynamics of potentially mineralizable nitrogen in organic nitrogen and biomass was discussed. It was also discussed comparison of ammonia emission, potential greenhouse effect, primary energy input, acidification potential, CO2 emission between organic and conventional farming, the nitrate-nitrogen dynamic in the soil profile by organic, integrated and conventional farming system. In conclusion, it was suggested for Korean Organic Agriculture that the importance of legumes and green manures in rotation system for increase/maintenance of soil ferfility, and was pointed out the need of investment for environment impact of Korean organic farming implement.

  • This study has been carried out to analyze the effects of leachate recirculation on methane gas concentration in the Landfill. The monthly average on precipitation of the landfill area during the period from 2010 to 2016 has been recorded at 130.9 mm and the total precipitation was recorded at 73.7 mm for the month of June in 2017. And based on the Korea meterological administration data obtained, the water content has been anticipated to be at low level. And for the control environment testing on the effects of leachate recirculation, the reading has been carried out in relation to the methane gas concentration with the landfill site tested with average reading of 30.14%. Once the reading has been established 5 tones of leachate has been injected and the readings carried out respectively with the first reading recorded at 24.66% on June with subsequent readings carried out, 31.51 (6/24), 36.88% (7/1) and final reading carried out on 7/25 registered at 52.47%. Based on the leachate recirculation, the test showed increase of methanate concentrations with the concentration percentage showing between 50~65%.

  • The ever-increasing amount of waste vinyl is causing big environmental problems. In particular, those from farming industry are sometimes left on site or even illegally reclaimed due to the lack of environmental concerns and capacity for collection, which worsens the situation. It is, therefore, believed that the recycling of waste vinyl is the most ideal solution in the viewpoint of environmental preservation. In this context, the potential of vinyl strip as a ground reinforcing material is investigated to expand the application of waste vinyl recycling. In this study, a series of uniaxial compression tests and resonant column tests were performed for sand specimens reinforced with vinyl strips and cement to investigate their reinforcing effects on static and dynamic behaviors. The changes in the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), the shear modulus and the damping ratio according to the mixing ratio of vinyl strips and cements were analysed for sand specimens, having 40% and 60% relative densities, under various mixing conditions. As a result, both the static and dynamic reinforcing effects of vinyl strip-cement mixture were confirmed and the optimum mixing ratio was proposed.

  • This study was conducted to characterize food waste leachate (FWL) and to compare its characteristics according to generation source: feed supplement- and compost-producing facilities. FWL contained high levels of organic compounds such as carbohydrate, protein and lipid. The moisture content of FWL was among the range of conventional wet anaerobic digestion. FWL was acidic (pH of $4.0{\pm}0.3$) and showed high coefficients of variance for specific parameters: carbohydrate, protein, lipid, ethanol, acetic acid and propionic acid. FWL derived from feed supplement-producing facilities showed slightly lower concentrations of most parameters than FWL derived from compost-producers. However, the difference was not significant at 5% significance level according to analysis of variance.

  • Potential hydrocarbon degrading bacteria were screened from the site artificially polluted with 20,000 ppm of diesel. Among the isolates, two strains, SJD2 and SJD4, showed higher activities to degrade diesel on the Bushnell-Hass broth medium containing 2% of diesel. 16S rDNA sequence analysis revealed that SJD2 and SJD4 were Bacillus fusifomis and B. cereus, respectively. Both strains were found to grow in a wide range of temperature between $20^{\circ}C-55^{\circ}C$, with the best at $30^{\circ}C-37^{\circ}C$. This is the first report, as far as we know, that B. fusifomis is capable of degrading diesel. We hope that a new isolate, B. fusifomis, will efficiently conduct bioremediation at the contaminated sites with petroleum hydrocarbons.

  • The objective of this study is the evaluation of the performance of a large-scale respirometer (LSR) of 17.7 L in the determination of the methane generation rate constant (k) values. To achieve this objective, a comparison between anaerobic (GB21) and LSR tests was conducted. The data were modeled using a linear function, and the resulting correlation coefficient ($R^2$) of the linear regression is 0.91. This result shows that despite the aerobic conditions, the biodegradability values that were obtained from the LSR test produced results that are similar to those from the GB21 test. In this respect, the LSR test can be an indicator of the anaerobic biodegradability for landfill waste. In addition, the results show the high repeatability of the tests with an average coefficient of variance (CV) that is lower than 10%; furthermore, the CV for the LSR is lower than that of the GB21, which indicates that the LSR-test method could provide a better representation of waste samples. Therefore, the LSR method allows for both the prediction of the long-term biodegradation potential in a shorter length of time and the reduction of the sampling errors that are caused by the heterogeneity of waste samples. The k values are $0.156y^{-1}$ and $0.127y^{-1}$ for the cumulative biogas production (GB21) and the cumulative oxygen uptake for the LSR, respectively.
