Anti-Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (Bevacizumab) Therapy Reduces Hypertrophic Scar Formation in a Rabbit Ear Wounding Model

  • Background Hypertrophic scarring is a pathological condition that occurs after trauma or surgery. Angiogenesis occurs more often with hypertrophic scarring than with normotrophic scarring. The regulation of angiogenesis is one of the key factors in hypertrophic scar management. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is an essential factor in the angiogenetic response. This study investigated whether decreasing the level of VEGF is effective for treating hypertrophic scarring. Methods Ten 8-week-old female New Zealand white rabbits were included. Four defects were created on each ear by using a 6-mm punch. Bevacizumab (Avastin, Roche Pharma, Basel, Switzerland) was administered in one ear and normal saline was administered in the other ear. Treatment was administered starting on day 2, every 2 days, until day 14. The levels of VEGF were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay on day 10 and histologic results were analyzed on day 40. Results Bevacizumab induced-defects showed less hypertrophic scarring when compared with the control group as measured by the scar elevation index (SEI) and loose collagen arrangement. The SEI in the experimental group was $1.89{\pm}0.13$, compared to $1.99{\pm}0.13$ in the control group (n=30, P=0.005). Additionally, the VEGF level was lower ($38.72{\pm}11.03pg$ vs. $82.50{\pm}21.64pg$, n=10, P=0.001) and fewer vessels existed ($8.58{\pm}0.76$ vs. $7.2{\pm}1.20$, n=10, P=0.007). Conclusions Preventing excessive angiogenesis is effective for preventing scar formation, especially with hypertrophic scarring. Although it is not an approach that is sufficient alone for the management of scarring, it may be one of several important strategies for scar treatment.

노두무게에 따른 북강활의 생육 및 추대반응 (Effect of Weight of Crown Part on Growth and Bolting Response in Ostericum koreanum Kitagawa.)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the weight of crown part effect on growth and bolting response of Ostericum koreanum Kitagawa. Bolting rate with crown part weight was represented 0%, 0%, 4.1%, 12.9%, 25.1%, 34.9% corresponding to each crown part weight 5 g, 10 g, 20 g, 30 g, 40 g, 50 g. The heavier the crown part weight was the higher the direction rate rose and the flowering time came earlier. The dried root amount was the highest at 30 g and crown part number, the length of root, and crown diameter showed all the highest figures at 30 g. The relation between amount per 10 g and outcrop weight increased on secondary regression formula as weight increased and reached its peak at 29.7 g and then decreased over 29.7 g.

Influences of Different Planting Times on Harvest Index and Yield Determination Factors in Soybean

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the changes of harvest index and the relationship between harvest index and yield determination factors by different planting times in the determinate soybean cultivars, Shinpaldal and Danbaeg. Optimum planting were 23 May in 1995 and 1996. Late planting were 13 June in 1995 and 6 June in 1996. Growth period from planting to physiological maturity (R7) was shortened as planting time was delayed in two cultivars due to shortening of reproductive growth period in Shinpaldal, and of vegetative growth period in Danbaeg. Stem weight was distinctly decreased in late planting compared to optimum planting, but seed weight of both cultivars was not different between planting times. Also, seed number per pod and harvest index were significantly increased in late planting and the high correlation was found between two factors. It was suggested that increase of harvest index in late planting would be related with high assimilate use efficiency due to increase of sink capacity. The results of correlation and principal component analysis for yield determination factors showed that main factor on yield determination was pod number per plant at R5 stage associated with dry matter accumulation during early reproductive growth period, seed number per pod and harvest index were the second factor, and one hundred seed weight was the third factor. The result of this experiment indicated that yield determination in soy-bean was dependent mainly on pod number per plant related to dry matter accumulation by early reproductive growth period, and the increase of seed number per pod and harvest index could compensate for yield decrease by shortening of vegetative growth period in late planting. Such result suggests that optimum planting date can be delayed from mid May to early June in improved soybean cultivars in Korea.

Sphingomonas 속 세균의 명조건 생장에서 티아민의 필수적인 역할 (Novel insight into the role of thiamine for the growth of a lichen-associated Arctic bacterium, Sphingomonas sp., in the light)

  • 극지에 서식하는 세균은 강한 빛과 자외선을 받는다. 이 연구에서 우리는 북극에 서식하는 지의류 Cetraria sp.에서 분리한 호냉성 세균 Sphingomonas sp. PAMC 26621의 생장에 빛이 미치는 영향을 조사하였다. 이 세균은 암조건에서 명조건에서 보다 생장이 느렸다. 놀랍게도, 이 세균은 M9 최소배지에 티아민 혹은 아스코브르산을 첨가하면 명조건에서 생장이 증가하였지만, N-acetylcysteine을 첨가한 배지에서는 생장의 변화가 없었다. 첨가한 티아민과 아스코브르산은 포도당-6 인산 탈수소효소와 항산화 효소의 활성을 증가시켰다. 이 연구의 결과는 지의류와의 공생에서 제공된 티아민이 Sphingomonas sp. PAMC26621의 빛에 의한 산화적 스트레스를 완화시키는 항산화제 역할을 함을 의미한다. 이 연구는 강한 빛과 자외선이 만연한 북극에 서식하는 세균에 대한 생리적, 생화학적 관점에서 고찰할 점을 제시한다.

육묘(育苗) 야간온도(夜間溫度) 처리(處理)가 고추의 생육(生育)에 미치는 영향(影響) (Effects of Night Temperature Treatment of Raising Seedlings before Transplanting on Growth and Development of Pepper)

  • 풋고추(청양)의 육묘 온도를 주간온도는 같게 하고 야간온도를 달리하여 유묘의 화아분화와 생장 및 포장에서의 생장을 조사하였다. 육묘기간 중의 야간 온도가 높을수록 고추 묘의 엽수, 지상부 생체중 및 건물중이 증가하였고, 화아분화 및 첫 개화일은 단축되었다. 정식 후 초장, 경경, 분지장, 절간장은 저온구($28/11^{\circ}C$)에서 증가한 반면 고온구($28/21^{\circ}C$)에서 억제되었다. 측지수는 고온구에서 현저히 감소되었으나 온도 처리에 따라 주경에서 발달하는 1차분지의 수는 일정한 경향을 보이지 않았다. 고추 모종의 생장은 저온구에서 억제되었다가 하우스에 정식한 후부터 점차로 회복된 반면, 고온구는 이와 반대의 경향을 보였다.

분화용 배양토가 구절초의 생육에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Soil Mixture on the Growth of Chrysanthemum zawadskii var. latilobum KITAMURA)

  • 유망 야생화의 하나인 구절초의 생육에 적합한 배양토를 구명하기 위해 무기재료로서 버미큘라이트, 펄라이트, 암쇄토, 모래, 밭토양을 사용하고 유기물원으로서 피트모스, 부염, 퇴비를 혼합한 배양토를 조성하여 구절초의 생육을 조사한 결과 다음과 같다. 구절초의 생육은 유기물원으로 부엽이 들어간 배양토에서 피트모스나 퇴비를 혼합한 것에 비해 현저히 양호한 것으로 나타났으며 시험 후 배양토의 이화학성 분석 결과 부엽과 피트모스를 사용한 배양토의 화학성은 모든 성분에 있어서 유사한 경향을 나타냈으나 퇴비를 사용한 처리에서는 pH가 ($8.6{\sim}8.9$)로 매우 상승하였고 인산의 함량이 ($237{\sim}1158\;mg/kg$)로 높아져 구절초의 생육을 불량하게 하는 원인이 된 것으로 판단되었다. 피트모스는 화학성분 조사 결과로서는 부엽과 유사한 것으로 나타났으나 양분의 공급 능력에서 부엽에 미치지 못하여 구절초의 생육이 불량하였던 것으로 생각된다. 구절초의 생육에 대한 통계처리 결과를 살펴보면 구절초의 배양토에 있어서 부엽을 유기물원으로 혼합한 상토가 피트모스나 퇴비에 비해 유의성 있는 생육의 증가를 보여 주었다. 부엽을 사용한 VPL, SaVPL, SVPL, UVPL 처리 간에 있어서도 VPL과 UVPL처리가 SaVPL 및 SVPL에 비해 유의성 있는 생육차이를 보였다. 피트모스를 혼합한 처리들과 퇴비를 혼합한 처리들 사이에는 피트모스 처리들이 퇴비에 비해 생육이 양호한 경향을 보였으나 통계적으로는 뚜렷한 경향을 보이지 못하였다.

Risk factor for pituitary dysfunction in children and adolescents with Rathke's cleft cysts

  • Purpose: This study evaluated the clinical manifestations of and risk factors for pituitary insufficiency in children and adolescents with Rathke's cleft cysts. Methods: Forty-four patients with Rathke's cleft cysts younger than 19 years who visited Seoul National University Children's Hospital between January 1995 and September 2009 were enrolled. Rathke's cleft cysts were confirmed histologically through an operation in 15 patients and by brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in 29 patients. The clinical, hormonal, and imaging features were reviewed retrospectively. Results: The clinical presentation of symptomatic patients was as follows: headache (65%), endocrinopathy (61%), and visual disturbance (19%). Endocrinopathy included central precocious puberty (18%), diabetes insipidus (14%), general weakness (11%), and decreased growth velocity (7%). After surgery, hyperprolactinemia resolved in all patients, but growth hormone insufficiency, hypothyroidism, and diabetes insipidus did not improve. Pituitary insufficiency except gonadotropin abnormality correlated significantly with severe headache, visual disturbance, general weakness, and cystic size. Suprasellar extension of cysts and high signals in the T2-weighted image on brain MRI were related to hypothyroidism, hypocortisolism, and diabetes insipidus. Multivariable linear regression analysis showed that only general weakness was a risk factor for pituitary insufficiency ($R^2$=0.549). Conclusion: General weakness is a risk factor for pituitary insufficiency in patients with Rathke's cleft cysts. When a patient with a Rathke's cleft cyst complains of general weakness, the clinician should evaluate pituitary function and consider surgical treatment.

  • 초음파 분무법에 의한 $SnO_2(:F)$박막의 제막시 DBDA와 $SnCl_4.5H_2O$를 출발물질로 사용하은 경우 제막조건이 전기적, 광학적 그리고 표면형상 드의 특성에 미치는 영향에 대해 조사하였다. 박막의 비저항은 출발물질에 관계없이 용액내의 F/Sn의 비가 0.6일 때까지는 급격히 증가하였으며, $SnO_2.5H_2O$를 출발물질로 사용한 경우 DBDA의 경우보다 낮았다. 용액내의 F/Sn의 비가 1일 때 출발물질로서, $SnO_2.5H_2O$과 DBDA를 사용한 경우 광투과율은 각각 83%와 85%로서 DBDA 사용한 경우가 다소 높았다.

The 2017 Korean National Growth Charts for children and adolescents: development, improvement, and prospects

  • Growth charts are curves or tables that facilitate the visualization of anthropometric parameters, and are widely used as an important indicator when evaluating the growth status of children and adolescents. The latest version of the Korean National Growth Charts released in 2007 has raised concerns regarding the inclusion of data from both breastfed and formula-fed infants, higher body mass index (BMI) values in boys, and smaller 3rd percentile values in height-for-age charts. Thus, new growth charts have been developed to improve the previous version. The 2006 World Health Organization Child Growth Standards, regarded as the standard for breastfed infants and children, were introduced for children aged 0-35 months. For children and adolescents aged 3-18 years, these new growth charts include height-for-age, weight-for-age, BMI-for-age, weight-for-height, and head circumference-for-age charts, and were developed using data obtained in 1997 and 2005. Data sets and exclusion criteria were applied differently for the development of the different growth charts. BMI-for-age charts were adjusted to decrease the 95th percentile values of BMI. Criteria for obesity were simplified and defined as a BMI of ${\geq}95th$ percentile for age and sex. The 3rd percentile values for height-for-age charts were also increased. Additional percentile lines (1st and 99th) and growth charts with standard deviation lines were introduced. 2017 Korean National Growth Charts are recommended for the evaluation of body size and growth of Korean children and adolescents for use in clinics and the public health sector in Korea.
