This paper presents a user programmable computational/control platform developed to conduct real-time hybrid simulation (RTHS). The architecture of this platform is based on the integration of a real-time controller and a field programmable gate array (FPGA).This not only enables the user to apply user-defined control laws to control the experimental substructures, but also provides ample computational resources to run the integration algorithm and analytical substructure state determination in real-time. In this platform the need for SCRAMNet as the communication device between real-time and servo-control workstations has been eliminated which was a critical component in several former RTHS platforms. The accuracy of the servo-hydraulic actuator displacement control, where the control tasks get executed on the FPGA was verified using single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) and 2 degrees-of-freedom (2DOF) experimental substructures. Finally, the functionality of the proposed system as a robust and reliable RTHS platform for performance evaluation of structural systems was validated by conducting real-time hybrid simulation of a three story nonlinear structure with SDOF and 2DOF experimental substructures. Also, tracking indicators were employed to assess the accuracy of the results.
A damage-based seismic design procedure for steel frame structures is formulated as an optimization problem, in which minimization of the initial construction cost is treated as the objective of the problem. The performance constraint of the design procedure is to achieve "repairable" damage state for earthquake demands that are less severe than the design ground motions. The Park-Ang damage index is selected as the seismic damage measure for the quantification of structural damage. The charged system search (CSS) algorithm is employed as the optimization algorithm to search the optimum solutions. To improve the time efficiency of the solution algorithm, two simplifying strategies are adopted: first, SDOF idealization of multi-story building structures capable of estimating the actual seismic response in a very short time; second, fitness approximation decreasing the number of fitness function evaluations. The results from a numerical application of the proposed framework for designing a twelve-story 3D steel frame structure demonstrate its efficiency in solving the present optimization problem.
In this study, strength reduction factors and inelastic displacement ratios are investigated for SDOF systems with period range of 0.1-3.0 s considering soil structure interaction for earthquake motions recorded on soft soil. The effect of stiffness degradation on strength reduction factors and inelastic displacement ratios is investigated. The modified-Clough model is used to represent structures that exhibit significant stiffness degradation when subjected to reverse cyclic loading and the elastoplastic model is used to represent non-degrading structures. The effect of negative strain - hardening on the inelastic displacement and strength of structures is also investigated. Soil structure interacting systems are modeled and analyzed with effective period, effective damping and effective ductility values differing from fixed-base case. For inelastic time history analyses, Newmark method for step by step time integration was adapted in an in-house computer program. New equations are proposed for strength reduction factor and inelastic displacement ratio of interacting system as a function of structural period($\tilde{T}$, T) ductility (${\mu}$) and period lengthening ratio ($\tilde{T}$/T).
Equivalent Single-Degree-of-Freedom(SDOF) analysis, most used for blast-resistant design, does not consider the effects of gravity load on the performance evaluation of blast resistance of structural members. However, since there exists gravity load on columns and walls of structures, the blast resistance of structural members should be evaluated considering gravity load on them. In this paper, an approach to reflect the gravity load effects on the equivalent SDOF analysis for dynamic blast response of structural members is proposed. For this purpose, the parametric studies using finite element analysis were performed by varying maximum blast load, blast load duration, and gravity load with constant the resistance and natural period of a structural member. The finite element analysis results were compared with the equivalent SDOF analysis results and the blast response of the structure member was estimated by conducting finite element analyses for various gravity loads. Finally, a graphical solution for ductility of a structural member with the variables of blast load, gravity load and structural member properties was developed. The blast response of structural members under gravity load could be estimated reasonably and easily by using this graphical solution.

Recently, sliding mode control(SMC) method has been investigated for control of building structures under earthquake loadings. SMC keeps responses of a structure in sliding surface while the structure is stable. This control method uses both linear controller and nonlinear controller such as bang-bang controller. This paper presents vibration control of a structure using saturated sliding mode controller, whose maximum conrtol force is limited. The effectiveness of SMC method with controler saturation is investigated based on two performance evaluation criteria: root mean square(RMS) and maximum values of floor drifts and accelerations. Simulation results indicate that SMC method is effective in reduction of displacement and acceleration utilizing the saturated controller's capacity efficiently.
Offshore structures are subjected to wind loads, wind generated wave excitations, and current forces. In this paper we focus on the wind generated wave excitations as the main source for the external forces on the structure. The main objective of the paper is to provide a tool for using deck acceleration measurements to predict the value of the force and moment acting on the offshore structure foundation. A change in these values can be used as an indicator of the health of the foundation. Two methods of analysis are used to determine the relationship between the force and moment acting on the foundation and deck acceleration. The first approach uses neural networks while the other uses a Fokker-Planck formulation. The Fokker-Plank approach was used to relate the variance of the excitation to the variance of the deck acceleration. The total virtual mass of the equivalent SDOF of the structure was also determined at different deck masses.

Performance-based approaches as an alternative method of the existing force-based approach have gradually become recognized tools for the seismic design and evaluation. The maximum inelastic displacement response using capacity spectrum method (CSM) with elastic response spectrum is estimated from seismic response of equivalent linear system converted from nonlinear system. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate accuracy of capacity spectrum method using the equivalent SDOF methods of 4 types and the equivalent damping methods of 5 types for RC wall structure. In order to evaluate accuracy of capacity spectrum analysis, the shaking table test results for RC wall structures are compared with those by the capacity spectrum analysis. Also, the effect of bilinear capacity curves by two bilinear approximation methods for capacity spectrum analysis is compared.
In this study, a new recentering friction device (RFD) to retrofit steel moment frame structures is introduced. The device provides both self-centering and energy dissipation capabilities for the retrofitted structure. A hybrid performance-based seismic design procedure considering multiple limit states is proposed for designing the device and the retrofitted structure. The design of the RFD is achieved by modifying the conventional performance-based seismic design (PBSD) procedure using computational intelligence techniques, namely, genetic algorithm (GA) and artificial neural network (ANN). Numerous nonlinear time-history response analyses (NLTHAs) are conducted on multi-degree of freedom (MDOF) and single-degree of freedom (SDOF) systems to train and validate the ANN to achieve high prediction accuracy. The proposed procedure and the new RFD are assessed using 2D and 3D models globally and locally. Globally, the effectiveness of the proposed device is assessed by conducting NLTHAs to check the maximum inter-story drift ratio (MIDR). Seismic fragilities of the retrofitted models are investigated by constructing fragility curves of the models for different limit states. After that, seismic life cycle cost (LCC) is estimated for the models with and without the retrofit. Locally, the stress concentration at the contact point of the RFD and the existing steel frame is checked being within acceptable limits using finite element modeling (FEM). The RFD showed its effectiveness in minimizing MIDR and eliminating residual drift for low to mid-rise steel frames models tested. GA and ANN proved to be crucial integrated parts in the modified PBSD to achieve the required seismic performance at different limit states with reasonable computational cost. ANN showed a very high prediction accuracy for transformation between MDOF and SDOF systems. Also, the proposed retrofit showed its efficiency in enhancing the seismic fragility and reducing the LCC significantly compared to the un-retrofitted models.

Earthquake load to design a structure has been calculated from a fixed base SDOF model using amplified surface accelerations along soft soil layers. But the method dose not consider a soil-structure interaction. Centrifugal experiments that were consisted of soil, a shallow foundation and a structure were performed to find the effects of soil-structure interaction. The experiments showed that mass and stiffness of the foundation affected a response of the structure and nonlinear behavior of soil near the foundation. And a rocking displacement caused by overturning moment affected the response and increases a damping effect. In this study, the centrifugal experiment was simulated as a two dimensional finite element model. The finite element model was used for nonlinear time domain analysis of the OpenSees program. The numerical model accurately evaluated the behaviors of soil and the foundation, but the rocking effect and the behavior of structure were not described.

In this paper, a structural design method of a smart tuned mass damper (TMD) for a retractable-roof spatial structure under earthquake excitation was proposed. For this purpose, a retractable-roof spatial structure was simplified to a single degree of freedom (SDOF) model. Dynamic characteristics of a retractable-roof spatial structure is changed based on opened or closed roof condition. This condition was considered in the numerical simulation. A magnetorheological (MR) damper was used to compose a smart TMD and a displacement based ground-hook control algorithm was used to control the smart TMD. The control effectiveness of a smart TMD under harmonic and earthquake excitation were evaluated in comparison with a conventional passive TMD. The vibration control robustness of a smart TMD and a passive TMD were compared along with the variation of natural period of a simplified structure. Dynamic responses of a smart TMD and passive TMD under resonant harmonic excitation and earthquake load were compared by varying mass ratio of TMD to total mass of the simplified structure. The design procedure proposed in this study is expected to be used for preliminary design of a smart TMD for a retractable-roof spatial structure.
